Quirky Dutch Summer is een online inspiratie blog-event waarbij 10 weken
lang (van 12 juni t/m 14 augustus) elke dinsdag een inspirerende post op dit
blog zal verschijnen. Heb je iets gemaakt n.a.v. één van de inspiratie-posts,
zet je werk dan in de flickr groep en/of laat een link achter in een berichtje
bij de betreffende post op dit blog.

I was only blogging for a few months when in 2009 I bumped into Bethany Kartchner and her artwork at the online SIS community. At that time, both Bethany and I concentrated mainly on scrapbooking. After SIS retired (btw, I still miss the SIS community!) we lost sight of each other for a while. I concentrated on art journaling but every now and then I visited Bethany’s blog and noticed that she too was exploring all different kinds of creativity. She developed from ‘scrapbooker’ into a versatile ‘ mixed media artist ‘ and her blog is definitely worth a visit!
One of the techniques that Bethany is very good at (and that I know nothing about) is ‘plaster’ and all kind of techniques known as ‘ Encaustic ‘ (working with texture, beeswax etc.) I am very happy that she wants to share her knowledge and even made a tutorial video about working with Joint Compound. I hope that the ones of you that never worked with thicker stuff than paper, paint and glue take this challenge to dip your toes in techniques with plaster. The floor is all yours now, Bethany!
Ik was nog niet zo lang aan het bloggen toen ik in 2009, via het online scrapforum SIS, kennis maakte met Bethany Kartchner en haar werk. In die tijd waren zowel Bethany als ik voornamelijk bezig met scrapbooking. Na opheffing van SIS (een community die ik nog steeds mis!) verloren we elkaar een beetje uit het oog en bewandelden we andere wegen, maar zo nu en dan bezocht ik haar blog en zag dat ook Bethany haar creativiteit uitbreide en andere manieren van creëren onderzocht. Ze heeft zich de afgelopen jaren ontwikkeld tot een veelzijdige ‘mixed media artist’ en haar blog is zeker een bezoekje waard!
Eén van de technieken waar Bethany goed in is (en waar ik zelf niets van weet) is ‘plaster’ en technieken die bekend staan als ‘Encaustic’ (zoals werken in bijenwas.) Ik ben heel blij dat ze in deze post een tip van de sluier oplicht zodat wij ook allemaal eens aan de slag kunnen met dikker materiaal dan verf en lijm… ik geef dan ook graag het woord aan Bethany!
