Textures

After the last, stressful and busy weeks I decided I deserved a ‘day off.’
Yesterday was it! The sun was shining. The door to the garden was open
and I started collecting all the gorgeous paper scraps I could find in the house.
‘Playday, YAY!’

I felt a bit rusty – I’m not in the creating flow lately – so nothing better
then to take out the grid journal and start cutting paper.
The ‘grid journal’ is especially made for times like this – when the mind
isn’t in creating mode yet but the fingers itch…

I didn’t think about it much.
I put some brushstrokes (acrylic paint) on the background.
I cut squares of beautiful and textured paper and glued it on the page.
Just like that.
Just to please the eye.
To get in the flow.
To create
something
anything…

Letters from the Wasteland – 10th letter


Size: 16 x 11 cm - 6.3 x 4.3 inch.
Materials used: gesso, acrylic paint, templates (to add texture
shapes to the gesso),textured paper scraps (the fabric circles),
alphabet stamps, glimmer mist, cut out text from an old book.)

Letters from the Wasteland – 11th letter


Size: 16 x 11 cm - 6.3 x 4.3 inch.
Materials used: gesso, acrylic paint, several paper scraps
(including the brown one on the right - the colour came out
a bit dark on the photo) bubble wrap plastic, template (square
grid at the bottom), cut out text from a book.

Both pieces contain of a lot of layers, which give them depth.
However, it is difficult to capture that on a photo… you might try
clicking on the images to enlarge for a better view.

One thing I want to point out to you before I go back to work-mode
(as there’s a lot that needs to be done before the weekend starts)

The past weeks, I taught the online workshop ‘Let it Loose’ to an
enthusiastic group of Dutch ladies (we’re heading near the end of
the workshop now.) The art they make with my lessons often leaves
me breathless. You can find a selection of their art pieces on the
website in the Public Gallery. It’s worth a look!

    Wat een leuk idee, dat je je grids journal gebruikt om op te warmen, zeg maar. Om weer in je ‘flow’ te komen. Aan je Letters from the Wasteland moet ik nog steeds wennen, maar ik ben nu eenmaal een mens dat van kleurexplosies houdt..Overigens wel mooi om al die lagen en structren te zien! Enne.. ik las net je berichtje op Julie’s blog over The SketchbookProject: ik zat ook al een tijd te twijfelen maar heb me vanmorgen toch ervoor opgegeven! Misschien kan ik je over de streep trekken? ;-)

    I have never heard of a grid journal but it looks like a great way to get your creativity going – no stress, just playing. Sometimes I do a similar technique with my paints where I just paint strips or blobs of color – somehow things just grow from that. I went over to the Public Galery and WOW! what stunning creations your students have made! I was particularly intrigued by the pieces from lesson 3 – was that a lesson using fabrics, gauzes, or ? It’s always a joy to visit your blog! Have a great week!

    Loving your neutral textures and your “letters” – I wish I could do neutrals the way you do – I am always too quick to rely on colour doing all the work….

    And it’s great to see the work from your students in the gallery – so many fantastic results – I especially like the one by Inge with the approaching train – so dynamic!

    Weer heel mooie werkjes! En ohh die texturen, zo’n goed idee! Ik heb er zelf nog nooit aan gedacht om zo’n verzameling te maken maar het ziet er wel leuk uit. :) Fijn weekend!

    Toch handig, dat grid journal… Die ‘opwarm’ bladzijde op zich is al mooi maar de twee bladzijden voor het ‘Wasteland’ project zijn weer als vanouds hoor!! Vooral de eerste vind ik mooi!

    En ik heb de galerie bezocht, je hebt niets teveel gezegd… de werken van je laatste groep zijn fantastisch!!!

    I love the grid idea to get creative juices flowing. Everything you create is always magnificent to me. And I enjoyed looking at some of your student work. I took a class from Orly Avineri yesterday and am still a little high. Glad you learned about quincinera through me.

    Ik vind je grid erg mooi met die verschillende texturen, en dat voor een “opwarmertje” Je wasteland pagina’s zijn weer prachtig! De verschillende lagen zijn toch wel te zien hoor.

    Natuurlijk ben ik in de galerij gaan kijken. Heel mooi werk zit er tussen. Vooral de eerste pagina, daar ben ik helemaal weg van.
