wil run from June 12 – August 14. 2012.
You will find an inspiring blogpost up on
this blog every Tuesday during the Summer.

 

If you use the given inspiration as a jumpstart for your artwork and you have
blogged about it, or shared your work in the flickr group, please leave a link in
a comment with the relevant post on this blog.

rijtje vinden (de laatste post staat altijd bovenaan.)  Quirky Dutch Summer
heeft ook een eigen flickr groep, die vind je hier.

Quirky Dutch Summer is een online inspiratie blog-event waarbij 10 weken
lang (van 12 juni t/m 14 augustus) elke dinsdag een inspirerende post op dit
blog zal verschijnen. Heb je iets gemaakt n.a.v. één van de inspiratie-posts,
zet je werk dan in de flickr groep en/of laat een link achter in een berichtje
bij de betreffende post op dit blog.

#2 Mail art / Mail art

“Mail art is a worldwide cultural movement that began in the early
1960s and involves sending visual art (but also music, sound art,
poetry, etc.) through the international postal system. Mail Art is also
known as Postal Art or Correspondence Art….” ~ Wikipedia ~

the artist Ray Johnson (1927-1995) founded in 1962 the ‘ New York
Correspondence School of Art ‘ and is thus seen as the founder of the
mail art movement that developed in the 1960s and 1970s. Its aim
was to create the opportunity for the direct exchange of art, ideas and
information among artists in different countries without interference
from art dealers or galleries.

jaren zestig, waarbij beeldende kunst (maar ook muziek, poëzie, enz.) via
de traditionele postsystemen worden verzonden. [De Engelse term 'mail

De kunstenaar Ray Johnson (1927-1995) – die in 1962 de ‘New York
Correspondence School of Art’ oprichtte – wordt gezien als de grondlegger
van de mail art beweging die zich ontwikkelde in de jaren zestig en zeventig.
Het doel was om kunst, ideeën en informatie onder kunstenaars uit diverse
landen rechtstreeks uit te wisselen zonder inmenging van kunsthandelaren
of gallerieën.

Now I know for a fact that there are several avid card makers among
the readers of my blog. Does that make them ‘mail art artists’ then?
Well, yes and no. Yes, because homemade cards can of course be seen
as ‘art.’ No, if the card is sent in a regular envelope.

Nu weet ik dat er zich onder de lezers van mijn blog ook een aantal fervent
kaartenmaaksters bevinden. Valt dat, wat een kaartenmaakster doet, dan
onder mail art? Ja en nee. Ja, omdat zelfgemaakte kaarten natuurlijk ‘kunst’
zijn. Nee – als je die kaart in een gewone envelop verstuurd.

I have come to the conclusion that, to call it ‘ mail art ‘, the address,
postage stamps and (possible) the sender’s address have to be a
component of the image. Now I did not take an in-depth study of the topic
so I might be wrong but that does not matter when it comes to this blog post
or the assignment that I have in mind for you. After all, I am the boss of
my own blog and so I can give you the challenge to create ‘Mail Art’
according to my rules. :)

Ik ben tot de conclusie gekomen dat, om het ‘mail art’ te mogen noemen,
het verzendadres, de postzegels en eventueel het adres van de afzender
onderdeel van het beeld moeten zijn. Nu heb ik er niet echt een diepgaande
studie van gemaakt, dus ik kan het mis hebben, maar dat doet er voor deze
blogpost en opdracht ook eigenlijk niet zo toe. Ik ben namelijk lekker de baas
over mijn eigen blog, en dus gaan we ‘mail art’ maken volgens míjn regels. :)

Well uhm… I would not call it ‘rules’ – let us say there’s this condition:
whatever you make, you must be able to put a stamp on it and send it
through the snail mail. You can make a postcard with the adress on or
choose to ‘cover’ your card with an envelope – but if you do the latter,
you must decorate your envelope too – turning it into ‘art’.

Nou jaaa… ‘regels’ zou ik het niet willen noemen – ik stel maar één voorwaarde:
het moet met postzegel erop verstuurd kunnen worden. Dus of je nu een kaart
maakt en die kunstzinnig adresseert of een envelop versierd waarin je je kaart
of brief verzend maakt niet uit.

Let’s put it this way: make the postman smile by giving him something
artsy to deliver instead of those plain, boring envelopes he is used to.

You don’t have to really send your mail art, but of course it is nice to make
someone happy by doing so. Who would not love to get your mail art?
(oh, and if you really don’t know to whom you should send your art -
I am willing to sacrify myself :D You can email me to get my address.)

Laten we het hierop houden: gun de postbode ook een leuke dag en maak
iets wat opvalt tussen alle saaie enveloppen!

Verzenden hoeft niet maar mag wel – want naar wie je het ook verstuurd:
de ontvanger zal blij zijn met zulke leuke post in de brievenbus!
(oh, en mocht je niet weten naar wie je het kunstwerkje op zou moeten sturen?
Dan wil ik me voor deze keer wel opofferen :D Mail me dan voor mijn adres.)
