I love poetry.
I am especially fond of ‘found poetry’, and I mean found in all its forms… found in book titles, found in magazines, on book pages, cut out words and sentences – you name it. There is so much possible when it comes to ‘found poetry’… and this kind of poetry is also great to use on art journal pages also.

I therefore started FOUND POETRY FRIDAY – everyone is welcome to play along!

There is an “Inlinkz”-list at the end of this post. If you want to share your found poems, you are welcome to add your name to the list that will link us to your blogpost.

You can post your found poem on your own blog any time during the week, so you don’t have to make YOUR Fridays all about poetry – you just link us to the post that contains your poem. Please use the url that goes directly to you ‘found poetry post.’

Here’s my found poem for this week…

I cut the texts from old magazines. The background is a collage made out of (pieces of) maps, pages from an old atlas and parts from a tourist travel book. I used spray ink to bring the pieces together. The circles are made with bubble-plastic and acrylic paint and I made the silhouet stand out by using watersoluble crayons.

Some time ago, Michelle LaPoint Rydell asked me: It would be really neat to see a blogpost of how you go about coming up with your poems. Do you lay a whole bunch of phrases out and then pick from that or do you look for certain words or how does that work?

There are several ways to find a poem – for one thing, it depends on if you want to create a poem with booktitles or maybe you like to tore out an old bookpage on which you outline certain words. However, today I show you the process I went through to find a poem from cut out words and sentences.

I created this background in my art journal earlier this week, and now I grabbed it to use the pages as a base for my found poem. I took step-by-step photos during the process… you can enlarge each photo for a better view. Enjoy!

Last week, I sat at my desk and flipped through ‘National Geographic’ magazines, searching for words and phrases that I could use for found poetry. Somehow I ended up cutting out all kinds of dark and sad sentences… and that resulted in – well, you know – a sad and disturbing art journal spread.

Some of you may have seen this page – with the stenciled girl – laying in my studio on a photo in a former post… I decided to leave the page as it is and not add anything more to it except text, so here’s my found poem page for today…

First of all: THANK YOU ALL for your sweet birthday wishes last Wednesday.
I was overwhelmed by all the messages I received via my blog, email, facebook and snail mail.

Today’s found poem is a haiku, so I also submit this spread to Haiku my Heart and join Rebecca’s haiku circle today.

The words together with the images made a bit of a lonely and dark art journal spread…

In This Barren Land

Hope your weekend isn’t ‘barren’ but instead filled with sunshine and love!

Now it is your turn… did you find a poem this week?

My poem this week was created with cut out sentences/words. I have a box filled with all kinds of cut out sentences and I threw them all on the table… then I looked at what sentences ‘spoke to me’ and how they would fit together to form a poem. I spend half an hour puzzling, but I like the outcome!

Night Fell Fast

I created a background for this poem in my ‘weird art journal’ and added a tape tranfer that I made the other day (the woman’s face on the left.) I blame Rachel & Glenda as the challenge at A Year in the Live of an Art Journal was to use the ‘tape transfering technique’ on your journal page.

(Tip: Tape transfering is the most easy way of transfering, here’s a 1.19 video by Julie Baltzer on how to do it.)

As you know, I participate in Haiku my Heart Friday – posting a haiku almost every Friday – since May 2011. The last 30 weeks, I published a haiku that I found in my bookcase by combining book titles. The booktitles with the right amount of syllabes to make haiku are all used by now so I faced a dilemma this week: back to writing haiku from scratch or “stretch the borders” and make a brand new series… and I decided the latter.

You know I love not only haiku, but poetry in general. I am especially fond of ‘found poetry’, and I mean found in all its forms… found in book titles, found in magazines, on book pages, cut out words and sentences – you name it. There is so much possible when it comes to ‘found poetry’… the found poem can be a haiku but also a longer poem… anything goes and as an extra, I love that it is so usable in art journaling!

Sooo… as of now my Fridays will be FOUND POETRY FRIDAY – and I hope you will join me.

Yes, this challenge is wide open to anyone who loves found poetry!! As of NEXT WEEK (July 19)
I will add an “Inlinkz”-list at the end of each Friday post and if you want to share your found poems (and/or art journal pages that you made with it) you are welcome to add your name to the list that will link us to your blogpost. You can post your found poem on your own blog any time during the week, so you don’t have to make YOUR Fridays all about poetry – you just link the post that contains your found poem to the list on Friday. Now doesn’t that sound like fun?

And what is a blog series without a badge?

Right! So I created a badge.

(I will put this badge in the side menu with the proper code later this weekend – to make it easy for you all to copy and paste it onto your own blog.)

To give an example of found poetry: here’s a poem I found this week…
This is a book title poem but as I said, any found poem goes!

Naar de vuurtoren

To the lighthouse
The great adventure
On the road
been afraid for almost everything

I can’t wait to see what you find/make in the next week… you do play along, don’t you?!

OK, on to the ‘normal stuff’…

I created two index cards last week (I submit these to ICAD)

Now you must know I have these old books in my stash that are filled with photos and news-articles from certain years (for the Dutchies: “het aanzien van …”)
I once bought the books about “1965” and “1975” on a flea market, and while flipping through the pages of 1965 last week, I found some awesome pictures that inspired me. I cut out the photos, glued them onto the cards and searched old magazines to find funny titles to go with the photos… machine stitches complete the cards.

Just a few of the Next Generation

"Class of 1965" - The ladies on this photos graduated and
received certificates to be stewardesses for PanAm airlines.

.

A Place of Lavish Dreams

This photo is of the New York City skyline during the black out of 1965:

“The Northeast blackout of 1965 was a significant disruption in the supply of electricity on Tuesday, November 9, 1965. (…) Over 30 million people and 80,000 square miles (207,000 km2) were left without electricity for up to 13 hours.” ~ Wikipedia

It’s been a while since I showed you an art journal page… here’s one I created a couple of weeks ago but did not show you yet.

Conversation

The quote says: “It is all right to hold a conversation but you should let go of it now and then” ~ Richard Armour

( I have no idea what was on my mind or why I choose this particular quote – it sounds a bit weird to me now but the page is in my ‘weird art journal’ so it fits after all 😉 )

I’m off to have lunch now and after that I have a date with my neightbour Miriam. We plan to bind us both a journal (I will show her a special binding technique) and these journals will serve as our ’round robin journal.’ We plan to exchange them all the time to work on each others pages… should be fun!

Thanks for stopping by today, dear ones!
Hope you all have a nice weekend,
go find a poem!

Cold day lovelies… errmmm, I mean GOOD day of course – xcuse-me, but “cold” is on our minds here in Holland lately. When I woke up this morning, I found a white world outside my window… Grrrr, it had snowed. AGAIN *sigh*

The snow melted during the morning, but still: it is too cold for the time of year. These temperatures are a bit strange to experience in the Easter weekend in the Netherlands but hey… I’ll put on an extra sweater and just keep on going.

So here’s the Friday post with – of course – a haiku (a special ‘Easter haiku’ today) and quite some art. I’m pretty productive since I have a studio. So sit down, make yourself comfortable, grab another chocolate egg (you have my permission 😉 ) and come on in.

This haiku was found/written for Haiku my Heart Friday. Visit Rebecca at Recuerda Mi Corazon to find the list of participants and blog-hop from haiku to haiku.

I find myself making ATCs lately… it started in January, when I had to get used to having my own creative space and had to learn where I stored all my stuff and find my way around in my studio.

While decorating my studio, I’d come across a box with ribbons – I don’t use ribbon that much and almost forgot I had those – so it was fun to make an ATC with some of the pieces.

That number was already on the green ribbon… it must have been the end of the ribbon on the bobbin or something – but I kinda like how it works on this ATC.

I find myself using the sewing machine again! It is a lot easier now that I don’t have to drag that heavy machine (it’s an ‘antique’ one from the eighties) down the stairs…

And then last Month, Ali Wade had a give-away on her blog and I happened to win the book Artist Trading Card Workshop

The book shows all kinds of (technique) tutorials. The techniques are used to make ATCs but of course they can apply in an art journal also. Although I knew most of the techniques already, I’d forgotten about a bunch of them and it was fun to come across them again…

… like painting over a photo.

I made a lot more ATCs, but I am not able to show those (yet) as they have to stay secret for a while longer.

I did make my weekly art journal spread of course.

The Chronicles of Marit – Week 12

And here’s a spread in my ‘weird art journal’.

For Months now, ‘doll faces’ show up on many art journal pages. It almost seems like all art journalers were in the same workshop(s) to learn how to draw these kinds of faces. I sometimes like the drawings, but mostly I don’t. That made me think – what is it that some of these faces DO speak to me? I presume it has to do with personality. Some artists are able to make the faces ‘their own’… the basic ‘doll drawing’ may be still visible but some drawings have something ‘unique’ that makes it stand out. I jotted down my thoughts about this ‘hype’ on an art journal page – with a ‘doll face’ to illustrate my words of course.

Thanks for stopping by my blog again today dear ones!
Have a wonderful Easter weekend!
Go draw some faces.
Or eggs.
Or faces on eggs.
Or eggs on faces.
Whatever.
Enjoy!

Last Friday, someone asked “What will you do for haiku when you run out of book covers?”
Well, find a photo and write a haiku myself I guess, like I did before.
But I haven’t run out of covers yet (my bookcase is huge!) so here’s another booktitle haiku.

Haiku My Heart Friday

Naar de vuurtoren

Het lied van de oceaan

Hier is mijn eiland

To The Lighthouse

Thoughts By The Ocean

Here Is My Island

This haiku was found/written for Haiku my Heart Friday. Visit Rebecca at Recuerda Mi Corazon to find the list of participants and blog-hop from haiku to haiku. I assure you, it is a nice way to close the week and start the weekend.

I have two art pieces to show you – an old and a new one.
The first one is an art journal spread I made in January,

Veranderd (‘changed’)

The text is in Dutch and a bit of a free translation from this text:
“…Was I the same when I got up this morning?
I almost think I can remember feeling a little different…”
~ Alice in Wonderland ~

Next is my latest Chronicles spread

The Chronicles – Week 11

I know a lot of Dutch blogreaders/friends always try to read the journaling… I’ll make it easy for you this time: the journaling is all about my struggle with sigarettes and since Saturday (March 16) I quit smoking. Yes, dear ones… this 30-years-of-smoking junkie is without nicotine for the seventh day today – no medicines, no ‘nicotine chewing gum’, no nothing: I quit cold turkey. BAM!
Yes, I am proud of myself.

Oh, and my beloved did the same.
I am proud of him too.

PERSEVERE is my ‘one little word’ of the year – I hope to stick to it.

I wish you all a nice weekend.
Go breath some fresh air!
Ha!

When you saw my former post, you could have seen and read why my desk was filled with mail art from all over the world. My desk does not look like that today though – the surface is clean and ready for me to paint, draw, collage and journal again – and that is the plan for today and the weekend!

But there’s no start until I publish my weekly haiku – I just cannot start a Friday without it.

Haiku My Heart Friday

Mijn zomer met George

Klein verhaal over liefde

Op Scheveningen

My Summer With George

Little Story About Love

In Scheveningen

This haiku was found/written for Haiku my Heart Friday, and if you want to see more photos and read more haiku, I recommend you hop on over to Rebecca’s blog Recuerda Mi Corazon to find the list of participants.

By the way: you are very welcome to join the ‘Haiku my Heart’ group if you like. We’re all very encouraging and friendly and we will welcome you as a friend, promise!

Oh, and if you don’t know what haiku is exactly you might want to read this post in which I explain about the ‘rules’ of writing haiku. It’s easy and once you start with it you might find yourself counting syllables all the time 🙂

While flipping through magazines searching for images to collage last week, my eyes were drawn to all kinds of words and sentences and so I created an art journal page with a found poem. I guess I was in the ‘poetry-mood’…

This spread is made in my ‘Weird Art Journal’ – with a title like that it fits, doesn’t it?

Hallucinations

This spread has a lot of layers as it lay on my desk for days and I kept on adding paint and ink… You can see for instance (hardly visible) a chevron image, made with a template, in the lower part of the spread. The green circles/balls were stamped with bubble wrap (big bubbles indeed!) I used parts of an image of “ocean flowers” (how are those named? Flowers that grow under water?) and stamped with a hand carved spiral stamp. I doodled for a finishing touch.

Last but not least, I want to point out the ‘public gallery‘ on my website. “Mixed Emotions”, the online art journal workshop that Michelle LaPoint-Rydell and I taught in the last six weeks, has come to an end and I published art work from the participants (with their permission of course) in the gallery. It was such an enthusiastic and talented group and everyone had a blast! Thank you ladies for all the fun, encouraging each other, the inspiration you brought and your sweet comments!

.. and now my clean desk is waiting for me – it won’t be clean for long ’cause I have all kinds of ideas and projects going on which I am enthusiastic about and eager to start working on.

Do you have fun plans for the weekend?
Whatever you’re going to do: enjoy!
