I am stepping outside the box today, ’cause it’s Monday evening and you are
used to see me blogging on Tuesdays… I am facing a busy day tomorrow
and I have time on my hands this evening… so that’s why.
I’m sure you don’t mind this early post, do you?
So let’s get on with it then…
HO!
STOP!
Before you go any further I have to warn you – this post contains
a lot of photo’s!
Ready for that?
OK, here we go…
..
Let’s start with the new prompt at A Year in the Life of an Art Journal
THE PROMPT: Control
THE SONG: Only Girl (in the world) by Rhianna
PRODUCT/TECHNIQUE: lipstick
Yes, I did manage to get this page done in time and, even better,
I’m quite satisfied with it too!
I noticed there’s a pattern in working with these prompts… I always seem
to find my inspiration in the lyrics, not the ‘prompt title’ or the techniques…
With this page, it’s no different. Again, the inspiration came with a sentence
from the lyrics… I cut the image out of an old ‘National Geographic’ (I have
a huge stack of those. Every time I flip though the pages, I find inspiration
and images to go with it!) I’m not sure if the lady is really sitting on the back
of her husband or that she’s standing on higher ground behind him, but I find
the image fitting with the text.
To create the background I used gesso, paint, spray ink, water soluble crayons
and stamping ink (the vague text stamp is visible in the yellow background
behind the woman). The circles are cut out images. Black and white sharpies
for the spirals and journaling.
I”ve been asked before how I built up my ‘chronicles’ art journal pages.
Last week, I decided to give you an ‘insight view’ on how I work.
I thought of making a video at first, but it was dark and rainy weather
and the light was no good. I took pictures instead.
(Remember: you can click on each image to enlarge for a better view.)
How I built up last week’s art journal page.
Last week, I looked for that black ‘template’ thingie to use on the
big art journal page (see former post) where I was working on.
I couldn’t find it at first so I turned the attic upside down to search
for it. It wasn’t there (I found it elsewhere) but instead I came across
that pink, plastic sheet…. what was that? How did it get here?
Where did I get it? Did someone gave it to me? When?
I really can’t remember buying or even having it…
It has tiny little squares and I thought it might be fun to use with
spray ink sometime. I took it with me downstairs and put it in sight.
..
On Tuesday, the mail brought me this wonderful postcard from my mom.
It’s a painting called ‘Duizeling’ (Vertigo)
by the Belgium painter Léon Spilliaert (1881-1946)
..
I love this painting very much (I have a poster of it too)
and I wanted to save it in my art journal.
..
So here’s where the inspiration came from for last week’s page.
That bizarre, pink, plastic template and
the colours of Spilliaert’s painting.
I painted the background in the same sandy
colours as those on the painting.
After that, I sprayed with anthracite
glimmer mist. The template didn’t let me down!
This is what it looks like after I sprayed
through the holes. (on the left page)
Then I flipped the plastic sheet over
and placed it on the right page.
The ink that was still on the template
leaved this other mark.
It did run a bit, filling up the holes
but I liked that effect!
..
Now it was time to position my postcard.
(And yes – that’s another ‘weird photo’ from the
same series I used on the index card last week.)
This had to be the place for the images.
(Are you sure? Yes I’m sure!
OK, glue them down on the page then…)
..
I had a lot of journaling in mind. Choices
had to be made. Would I write directly
onto the page? Use journaling pads? Tags?
Maybe a transparancy, so the litte ink squares
would still be visible?
I tried all kinds of things…
..
…and then I suddenly realized that I wanted to write
about the ‘big thing’ that I have been working on.
It’s something that took a lot of my time that week
but has to stay a secret for a while longer.
The idea came to me, that I needed a place to
hide the journaling – a LOT of journaling
that I would write on the tags.
After that, I would hide the tags.
Where? How?
..
Eeeckkk… underneath the postcard…
but I glued that to the page already!
Was I too late…???
I ripped the postcard off the page!
It did rumple a bit, but it came off in one piece. Pffff…..
I glued an envelope on the back to hold the tags.
..
I liked the look of one particular small transparency
so I glued that down with the postcard.
..
I stamped the week-number on the page
next to the transparency.
..
Now I was ready for more fun…
Journaling!
See all those coloured markers and sharpies?
I ended up using only black 😀
I wrote the ‘secret’ journaling on the tags.
I also inked the edges and altered the ‘hole’ with
canvas (7 Gypsies ‘what’s-it-called’?!)
..
I wrote the ‘normal’ things that happened during
the week with a black sharpie straight on the right page.
And that was it.
This was ‘THIS WEEK’S WAY’ to built a page.
I don’t always work like this (and I certainly don’t
always glue images on the page to pull them off later…)
Next week might be different…
The Chronicles of Marit 2011 – Week 30
I hope you enjoyed this ‘behind the scenes’ post!
See you back on Friday dear ones!
(Oh, and for the Dutchies: enjoy the sunshine! Finally!)

Fijne week, groetjes Viv

Oh, I loved learning how your page came to be !Isn’t it fun how the pieces just tell us where they want to go ? (at least most of the time ! 😉 )
I love the page above too. That photo of the couple is very cool and I love the orange. Cool spirals too.
I hope the rest of your evening is cozy and that your busy day goes well, Soul Sister ! Much love !

I am so giggling because I pretty much always tear something off a page that I’ve already glued down! sometimes it works, sometimes it works (because I make it work!) heh!
I’m also giggling because I have internet access at home again! 11 days is way too long to not be able to check in on my friends!
happy week to you Marit!!!

I always enjoy your creative journey… this is very inspiring even though it’s something I haven’t tried…. maybe it’s time for me to do some art journaling!

Those are from a Gauche Alchemy kit that you won! I remember! They help to create some awesome and fun textures! 🙂

Marit, you crack me up! Especially the comment about the markers.
It’s very interesting to see how we artists can use the same materials and come out with completely different pieces of art. The art world is so vast.
This was an awesome post. Thanks for sharing (and by the way, I have THREE sons: Zach (16), David (19) and Jacob (22). And yes, as they get older they are more interesting. However, my 16 and 19 year olds are a REAL challenge. Can I send them to you?

You chose a great photo for this week’s journal. Thanks for sharing the process. I would have cried if I had to rip the page off the page. It came out great though.

Leuk hé, dat sprayen/stempelen met iets wat eigenlijk “afval” is!! Het effect is geweldig!!
De “take me for a ride” is écht prachtig!

Fijne zondag!!
