Weeks fly by, it feels like Spring outside but I won’t let the weather fool me: the nice weather will certainly turn and a period of cold, rain and wind will follow for sure. February fooled me before so I am prepared, ha!

However, the sunny weather inspired my friend Lena to take some very nice photos, even when she’s on her way to work she gets off her bike to shoot some pics… here’s the one I choose for today’s haiku

Friday haiku

The photo was taken by my friend Lena Schreijenberg

I submit this haiku to Recuerda Mi Corazon where our lovely hostess Rebecca brings us all together to share a haiku on Friday: Haiku my Heart.

Last week I created a little booklet for a collegue who celebrated her birthday. I don’t make these kind of booklets much, as the folding mechanism needs full focus to cut out and glue together… but the result is fabulous, don’t you think?!

Special fold booklet

February means that my online workshop is about to start. You can still join if you feel like diving into art journaling and let loose…

Online workshop “LET IT LOOSE”

This online workshop starts on February 20.
6 weeks – 12 lessons:
In English and Dutch: € 45.-

Now I can say that this workshop is awesome but that is not nearly as believable than when you hear (and see!) it from other people. Here are some examples of art created at this online workshop by former members of “Let It Loose”

More examples of art by Let it Loose participants can be found here

And here’s what former students say about the workshop:

“This has been the best experience…I have found another side to me that I didn’t know existed!!!! (…) I have also learned an important life lesson….I can let it loose….creating does not have to be that perfect, orderly art piece… it can be messy, have mistakes, and even not be the greatest…but it makes you HAPPY!!” ~ Jocelyn

“I had such a wonderful time with this workshop. I learned so much. I am still using all that I learned everywhere I go! Marit is a wonderful teacher, and she is offering this workshop again. I highly recommend it!!” ~ Danielle

“I don’t know if I could pick a favorite lesson. I think what I loved most about the class was the variety! Let it Loose has been such a fun and inspiring class! I highly recommend it – whether you have never tried art journaling, or you’ve been doing it for awhile. The lessons are fun and easy to follow, open enough for interpreting in your own style, and the atmosphere is super supportive!” ~ Michelle

“I’ve took a super cool art journal class with Marit – I wish I’d had teachers like her in school! When you visit her blog, check out her work – wow! If you have the chance to take a class with her – do it! You won’t regret it.” ~ Anne

Well… *blush*… I keep my mouth shut now 😉

DUTCH go HERE and ENGLISH go HERE for more info and registration.

Thanks for your visit, I really appreciate it!
Have a wonderful weekend.

Goodmorning on this “Black Friday”, which does not look black to me… blue skies and a little sunshine light up my morning and I don’t plan to go into town to buy things but stay in my atelier and create a storm instead!

But first, here’s my weekly haiku and I also have a happy, little booklet to show.

Friday haiku

Samen op de dijk.
Naast elkaar aan het water.
Samen oud worden.

Peaceful together.
Side by side at the seafront.
Gently getting old.

The photo was taken by my friend Lena Schreijenberg

I submit this haiku to Recuerda Mi Corazon where our lovely hostess Rebecca brings us all together to share a haiku on Friday: Haiku my Heart.

Duo (little leporello booklet)

Since September, I have a (temporarily) part-time job. I started this job together with another lady: Christa – (we heard later that they couldn’t choose between us after our job-interviews, so they hired us both.) Christa and I get along right from the first day. She’s a lovely, enthousiastic co-worker. We hardly knew each other when I celebrated my birthday in October, and still she bought me a nice present – and last month she brought me a bunch of beads to use in my bookbinding.

I thought it was about time I gave her something in return, so I made this little booklet for her.

I had a lot of fun combining animal-heads with human bodies…

In our job at the Zeeuws Archief (Zeeland Archives) we see old (16th, 17th) documents all the time so I found a Latin quote very fitting to put in the booklet.

It says “if two people perform the same thing, it is not the same thing.”

Top 2000 creative blog party

The end of the year, and my Top 2000 blog party, is getting nearer and nearer… the fun starts this Sunday already, as that is the day the voting for this year’s list starts. To me, that is the kick of of this fun time of the year. I you plan on joining the party in the last week of December, I suggest you visit my blog on Sunday afternoon to read all about voting for songs. (And if you have no idea what I am talking about, I suggest you click the link to find out all about it!)

Thank you for visiting my blog today. I wish you a beautiful (black?) Friday in whatever color you like!

Goodmorning, goodmorning lovely ones! I hope you’re still with me y’all, and not melted in these last few days… MAN, can you believe this warmth? It’s the end of August and yet another heathwave hit the Netherlands… I don’t know if you, over in the UK, had these temperatures but it sure wasn’t fun overhere. Today the weather will turn around and I am looking forward to a heavy rainstorm that will allow me to breath again.

Despite the heath, I am making progress with a big project that I started some time ago: transferring photos of my journal pages onto a big canvas. When all the transferring is finished, I will work on top of it some more… it’s the first time I do such a thing so we will see where it ends…

WOYWW #534

Last week, I could not show you the ‘thingie’ I made for a ‘lovely person’ because she had not received it yet… now she has so I can publish these photos. The ‘lovely person’ is Anne, she is the cousin of my mother and we always have difficulties defining what that makes her to me… for fun, we call each other all kinds of things (like ‘lovely person’ or ‘BFM’ (Best Family Member.)

Anne is a great textile artist and when I drooled over a bag she published on her Facebook page, she said she would make one for my birthday. It’s not my birthday yet but she made it anyway, and in return I made her a fun booklet. I collaged six ‘sisters’ which I gave names with the numbers in it. I wrote funny verses to go with the images… it is in Dutch of course and it does not rhyme in English, but I’ll try to give a translation with the pages.

Guest blogger: Willy Duit

Willy wrote a tutorial about the making of an envelope booklet. If you don’t feel creating yet another journal, than you can use the techniques she describes for creating the cover to create – for example – an art journal page.

I need to dig deep in my memory to get to the surface where and how Willy and I met… I think I found her online when we both were scrapbookers, that must have been in 2009. I even think I met her in real life, on a scrapbook fair once (in Utrecht?) but I’m not sure about that either. What I AM sure of is, that I have been following her blog and creative development for years now. Willy creates in a totally different style than me and that’s why I love her so much: she challenges and inspires me! I bet she can do the same for you with this Quirky blogpost.

QDS #6. Tea dye envelope book

As a child of deaf parents, I have been taught from an early age on to express myself ‘differently.’ When I, years later, was introduced to the wonderful world of mixed media and art journaling, my heart made a little jump: it felt like coming home right away! I playfully make contact with my inner self in a natural way and go from there to create and share my ‘being’. In this blogpost I take you with me on this road and share my imagination with you, welcome!

I show you how you can make an easy and fun, personal (Summer) booklet for keepsakes, using simple envelopes.

Get 12 simple, white envelopes and give them a beautiful old weathered look by soaking them in tea one by one. Take the envelopes out of the ‘tea bath’ gently and let them air dry. “Rooibos” tea gives the best results.

When the envelopes are completely dry, glue them together like this: six envelops with the open side to the outside (fold the flap first and stick the ‘nice sides’ together.) These will be the pages on the inside of your book in which you can put ‘stuff’ (tickets, notes et cetera.)

You have four envelopes left. Glue those per two together with the nice side on the outside, these will be the cover of your booklet that we will decorate.

Next collect all kinds of material like: tea bags, dried flowers, stamps, pieces of text-pages, magazine clippings, napkins, labels et cetera.

Take the top layer (that has the color/image on) off the napkin and glue it on the envelope cover using a thin layer of gel medium or mod podge. (Put the medium on the envelope and not on the napkin, it will tore…) Now ‘build’ layer after layer using the materials and clippings you like.

Add a little gesso here and there using your fingers. When everything is dry, stamp with (permanent) ink over the collage to create a well balanced total image.

Now stamp on the thin, white layer of the napkin (which you took off earlier, remember?) using waterproof ink. I used the image of a woman for my example, but you can of course use any stamp you like. If you don’t like (or have) stamps, you can use an image from a magazine or a photo.

Glue the image on the cover (remember: put the glue/medium on the cover and NOT on the thin paper layer.) Now sponge a little bit of color on your cover. I used distress ink (Rusty Hinge and Vintage Photo.) You can also color the stamped image if you like. Finish the cover with paint splatters and a wonky pencil line to make a border.

Punch holes in the cover using a puncher (measure and mark the place of the holes first.) Copy the place of the holes on all the pages and the back cover. Find a fitting branch outside your house to use for the binding. I put a bit of white gesso on mine for extra interest.

Bind your booklet like this:

Step 1: Stick the needle through the hole from the back to the front side, put the thread over the branch and stick the needle/thread back in the same hole, going from front to back again.

Step 2: On the back side, go to the second hole.

Repeat step 1.

When you got to the last hole, fasten off the thread.

Decorate the envelopes (pages) on the inside. I used stamps, a small (red) line and a found text: “Memory is the best of all gardens. Therein, Winter and Wummer, the seeds of there past lie dormant, ready to spring into instant bloom at any moment the mind wishes to bring them alive.”

Have a nice Summer!

Verzamel collage materiaal, zoals: lege theezakjes, gedroogde bloemen, postzegels, stukjes tekst, tijdschrift, servetten, labels etc.

Guest blogger: Nel Wisse

I don’t remember exactly when Nel (or ‘Florenel’ as she first presented herself with the name of her blog) and I got contact with each other. I recall that Nel participated in my online workshop “Let it Loose” but I taught that workshop several times and I don’t know what year it was when Nel participated. I do remember that I was still living in Eindhoven and liked the fact that I had someone from my ‘home-region’ amongst my students. I moved back to Zeeland five years ago and since we live in the same town now, we meet each other in real life every now and then to drink coffee, chat and inspire each other… and “inspire others”, that is what Nel is really good at!

WHO IS NEL?
Nel is a self-taught artist who developed her skills by taking courses from various artists. She also attended a course “Process-driven work for amateur artists.” In 1996, Nel got a certificate “Creative Crafts” and two years later she and a fellow ex-student put up a Creative Centre in Nagele, a small town in the Netherlands. Nel taught creative workshops there as well as in other places. She still teaches creative workshops occasionally. Nel prefers working with mixed media but also makes collages (including “zettiology”) and she loves to try out new techniques. She keeps on learning and developing by taking online workshops on a regular base.

QDS #3. Harmonica booklet in a tin can

It was years ago that I got this tin can…

For a long time I didn’t know what to do with it, until one day I found a little felt fish. The idea came to mind that I could fill this can with fishies; a little harmonica booklet with a ‘fish theme’.

What do you need to make a harmonica booklet-in-a-can?

Small tin can with hinged lid (a box out of wood may do the trick also.)

Images and quotes with/about your choosen theme.

Thin piece of cardboard.

Strip of thick paper (for your booklet.)

Aquarelle tape/watercolor tape (or some sort of paper tape, see tutorial.)

Pencil, glue, craft knife.

Markers, coloring pencils, paint.

How to make the booklet

Put your can on a piece of thin cardboard (you are making a template so you can cut it out of packing material, a cereal box or something…) Outline, and cut out the shape.

Now cut the shape a little smaller (remove approximately 0.08 inch from the borders.) Place the cardboard shape/template on the bottom of your can to see if it fits. You should be able to get it out easily. If not, cut the template slightly smaller.

Now cut a strip of paper.

Lay the cardboard template on your paper, outline the piece with a pencil and fold the strip exactly on the perimeter line. Fold and flip the paper strip, outline the template on the next piece of paper, fold and so on until you are satisfied with the length/number of pages. If your paper strip is too short, you can extend it by taping another paper strip to it using *aquarel/watercolor-tape. Be sure the tape is completely dry before you start working on the pages. (* Note by Marit: aquarelle- or watercolor tape is a thin paper tape. It is different from ‘painters/masking tape’ – the latter shows some sort of structure that probably stands out and stays visible on your pages. You can use it if you don’t mind that effect – you can even use patterned Washi tape – but if you want the connection as invisible as possible and don’t have watercolor-tape, then you might best cut a piece of thin paper to use as ‘tape’.)

Do you have a tin with round corners? Then cut out the marked corners of your harmonica-paperstrip.

Put the harmonica-stack one more time in the can to see if it fits well. You can adjust it still.

And now you can start working on your pages. You can fill the strip of paper per shape (page) or per spread but you can also deside to work on the whole strip at once (make a comic strip for example.) Of course you can use all kinds of techniques and materials, it depends on your style and your theme. Choose whatever you like working with.

You can see on the photo that I used all kinds of mixed media techniques – I even added a piece of dried fish-skin (on the photo to the right.)

I also wrote quotes and sayings about ‘fish’ on the pages, but you don’t have to use texts if you don’t like that. Create on the paper and finish the booklet every way you want and let it dry completely. When it is dry and to your liking, put glue to the bottom of your tin can and push the booklet on to it. Let dry, and finished!

It is of course fun to decorate the can in a way that it gives a clue about it’s content.

After opening the can, you also want easy acces to the booklet. I used a split pin (cotter pin) – attached as an ‘eye’ to the felt fish – that makes the booklet easy to open.

A little ‘knob’ like that is handy – you could also use a button.

… and what a surprise it is when you open the lid later… there’s that little booklet! Give yourself a compliment, YOU made that!

Gast blogger: Nel Wisse

WIE IS NEL?

Stukje dun karton.

Strook stevig papier.

Aquarelplakband (of papieren tape, zie tutorial.)

Potlood, lijm, evt. snijmes.

Markers, kleurpotloden, verf

Werkwijze

Zo’n ‘handvatje’ is handig.

I will not teach you how to paint a ‘doll-girl-with-big-eyes.’ Instead, we go looking for ‘faces showing character.’ Collage-heads, faces in blobs and spots, blind drawn portraits and more!

A few weeks ago I went to an exhibition where I bumped into my old art teacher and mail art artist Ko de Jonge. I had not seen or spoken Ko for over 30 years and this renewed acquaintance was really fun. Since we both are busy with art and I also dappled in mail art, we had a lot to talk about. Besides ‘everything mail art’, Ko told me he also collects small artists’ books. He sends out empty booklets to artists, asks them to fill the pages with their art and then return it to him. He has done this for years and is the curator of quite an archive now.

You felt it coming, right?
Right!
I received an empty booklet from Ko (by snail mail of course!) to fill with my own art.

The booklet has the title of the project Art = Start + and I had to leave the title that way, but I was free to do whatever I wanted.

Here’s how my booklet turned out, enjoy!

Each page has a small strip with text glued on it.
I cut the texts out of an old children’s book (1892) and it’s therefor that the spelling is ‘Old Dutch’.

In English:

The whole day.
At dawn.
Early in the morning.
It was afternoon already.
Late in the evening.
After midnight.
Too late.

Have a great weekend, enjoy every minute of it!

Last weekend, we helped my son move his last stuff to his new room in
another city. He’s officially gone out of the house now and although I was
used to him being away (he lived part with his dad) it still is a weird feeling,
not having him around half the week…

What’s a mom to do to overcome the silence?
Well, for an art journaling mom, there is no better therapy than get creative!

I made this page in my ‘album cover art journal’
There couldn’t be a more appropriate song then this one…

Teach your children – Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young

I used the second part of the song:

And you, of tender years
Don’t know the fears
That your elders grew by
so please help them with your youth
They seek the truth
Before they can die.
Teach your parents well
Their children’s hell
Will slowly go by
And feed them on your dreams
The ones they pick
The ones you’ll know by.
Don’t you ever ask them why
If they told you, you would cry
So just look at them and sigh
And know they love you

approximately 30,5 x 30,5 cm - 12 x 12 inch

The ‘album cover art journal’ is made of album covers/sleeves that are
taped together, forming a huge folded art journal (see pics in this post)
Every time I create a page in this journal, I need to take into account the page
that comes next to it or falls over it. It’s a bit of a puzzle to combine the pages
in a way that they fit each other.

Here’s what the page looks like with the next page visible (which is an album
cover by James Last – I will work on that one next)

Folding the pages, it looks like this…

I think I will make a video – flipping through the pages – when it’s all done.
That way, the ingenious folded pages will be more clear.

Next I want to show you this little antique booklet I bought in a small store
last Summer. I had the intention to alter the pages and turn it into a small
art journal. The text is in French, and I didn’t know what it said at first.
My mum found out it contains the catechism… but I’m sure that if there is
a God, he/she won’t mind me putting gesso over these words to turn it into
art journal pages.

I won’t alter the cover though… look at the beautiful weathered leather!

The book is bound with a thin thread.
Here’s a detail (click on the photo to enlarge)

The pages inside turned yellow and the paper is very thin and torn…

… with curly edges.

I’m preparing this booklet right now. I already glued pages together and
smeared a thin layer of gesso over the pages so the text shines through.
I’m not sure where to go next, but I’ll show you when it’s finished.

I’m sure you are expecting to see my weekly ‘Chronicles’ page coming now.
Well, no. Sorry… I started working on it but it’s not finished yet. (I know,
I know, it’s Tuesday already!) I want to work on it some more this afternoon
and will publish it next time.

One last thing before I go.
Do you know my friend Lena?
Her daughter Carmen made a video clip with her class (high school)
It’s amazing to see a bunch of teenage kids making something so professional!
I recommend you all hop over to Lena’s blog to watch the video and leave
Carmen some nice words ’cause WOWZAH, those kids are stunning!!!

Enjoy your week dear ones!
