This zine is a publication by Tammy Garcia from Daisy Yellow and it’s chock full with interesting articles and inspiring tips (just like Tammy’s blog Daisy Yellow itself.) Take a look at the the table of contents.

The article I wrote for the zine is called ‘Always Something to Write About‘ (it’s worth the read if I may say so myself) and you already know of course that I always have something (or a lot of things…) to write about. I ordered a new A3 block of drawing paper, the kind of paper I use to bind my journals with, so I can make a new Chronicles art journal for 2016. The 2015-Chronicles-journal is 15 cm x 21,5 cm {5.9 x 8.5 inch} the spreads are 30 x 21,5 cm and I like to change the size. I love the size of my ‘Grandes Chaleurs‘ journal so I am thinking to bind the new Chronicles journal in a similar size. It’s kind of a tradition to change the size every new year.

I’m also reflecting on my ‘word of the year‘ (in my case it was a ‘sentence of the year’ in 2015, but for next year I might pick a word again.) Did you choose a word to ‘live by’ in 2015? Did it work out for you?

The Daily Paper Prompt I came up with is about getting inspired by the rhythm of music. I took photos during my creating process that make a little tutorial. Are you in for that? Come on in then…

DPP #61 – Create to the Rhythm of the music

First, I taped a big piece of blank paper onto cardboard and placed it on my easel.

I then put some paint on my palet. At this point, I did not know what music would be my inspiration, so I choose random colours that spoke to me at that moment.

I decided to work with a palet-knife but you can choose whatever material or tool you like:
brush and paint, pencils, crayons, pens and so on…

Now that my materials were in place, I was ready to go so I turned on the radio.
I had no idea what music would be on. The radio played a song I never heard before
and I just went with it. I started to smear paint on the paper to the rhythm of the song.

This is the image I ended up with… created to the tune with paint and a palet knife.

The fun thing about this way of creating is, that the song does not need to have lyrics.
You can even put on a cd with classical music – or hiphop, or house music… anything goes.

After I’d created this background, I got curious to what the song had been all about… so I looked on the internet and found the playlist of the radio station. The song was Waves by Mr. Probz, a Dutch rapper/artist I did not know. I had not thought he was a rapper, as the song does not sound like ‘rap’ to me – I kinda like it even!

I also found the lyrics of the song here and was surprised when I read those… I had used just the right ‘watery’ colours! Then, I saw an image of a lighthouse and a boat (sail) popping out to me from the background, so I scribbled with a crayon and did some machine stitching to bring those shapes out.

The lighthouse deserved more attention, so I cut out the shape from old dictionary pages, sprayed a bit of ink on it and glued it onto the page. I added a moon (0r is it a sun?) and I journaled part of the lyrics on top of it.

You thought I didn’t draw anymore?

EDM #2 – Draw a desk lamp or other lamp

“When my beloved and I went to live together, he brought this desk lamp
in to the household. I can not remember that it ever stood anywhere else
than the window sill. In the summer, when I sit outside in the evening to
read, I aim the light through the window right on my book pages. Perfect!”

EDM #3 – Purses, Wallets or Bags

EDM #4 – Draw your mug or cup

“I drink my coffee every morning from this mug. I use it in the morning only.
Later on in the day, the ‘ordinary’ coffee cups are put on the table. I got this
white mug from the guy that renewed the roof of the shed. The logo of his
roofing company is pictured on the mug. I found it actually an ugly thing.
He also gave us an umbrella that I found much more enjoyable but ah, well,
some things turn out differently than you pictured them. This habit somehow
made its way into my life and now it is a daily recurring ritual.”

The Pulse: Take Two

Last Monday, Seth of the Altered Page
announced that he is working on a follow-
up  of his book ‘The Pulse of Mixed Media.’

I knew already that he was working on this.
Ha, guess what…?
I WILL BE FEATURED IN THE BOOK!!

OHMY, I was over the moon and honoured
when I received his email, asking me (who,
me? Yep, me!) to be part of his next book.

Of course I can not tell you any more. I leave the telling to Seth.

FEATURING magazine

Issue 2 is in the make and you can expect it
to come out by the end of August. I copied
the following text from the website:

The FEATURING team values the opinion of

Tammy Garcia, who blogs at Daisy Yellow
(that name is well known to the art journal
community – some people even think
Tammy’s name is Daisy) started a new series
on her blog: The Interview Series.

She will interview artists from time to time
and the series start with… ME!

She asked me a lot of personal questions about me, the magazine, my art,
my way of working and a lot more. Oh, and that one picture ‘with the gold’
is an art piece I made for my graduation exhibition back in 1989.
