Today I present you a guest post from Bianca Kalksma.
Bianca joined my top 2000 blog party last year and I follow her blog ever
since. She’d just started art journaling (thanks to me and my workshop 🙂 )
but she’s a pro when it comes to card making and all kinds of
stamping techniques. I’m very happy that she’s willing to share some of
those ‘secrets’ on this blog today! I’ll leave it up to Bianca now…

Vandaag heb ik Bianca Kalksma op bezoek! Vanaf het moment dat Bianca
enthousiast begon mee te spelen in mijn ‘top 2000 blogparty’ vorig jaar
volg ik haar blog. Ze is nog niet zo lang geleden begonnen met art journaling
(mede dankzij mijn workshop 🙂 ) maar ze is een pro als het gaat om kaarten
maken en allerlei stempeltechnieken. Ik ben heel blij dat Bianca bereid is
wat van haar ‘geheimen’ met ons te delen in deze gastpost.
Het woord is aan jou Bianca…

I started making cards with paper and
photos in 2004 but once I discovered
stamps and ink there was no holding me
back… from that moment on I only make
cards with stamping techniques. Last year
I started to experiment with art journals
and using different materials. I find it fun
to vary the techniques and alternate
between making cards and art journals.
I also teach workshops which gives me great
pleasure.

Since 2009 I offer a monthly challenge on my blog. In those challenge post
I also show my readers all kinds of possibilities and techniques on what they
can do with stamps, ink and paper. I have taken my hobby to different levels
and it is not only fun to have this hobby for myself, it is even more fun to have
contact with other blggers and share it!

In 2004 ben ik kaarten gaan maken met papier en foto’s , maar toen ik
eenmaal kennis maakte met stempels en inkt was er geen houden meer
aan. Nu maak ik eigenlijk alleen nog maar kaarten met stempels. Sinds
een klein jaar ben ik wat meer aan het experimenteren met art journals en verschillende materialen. Ik vind het leuk om de verschillende technieken
af te wisselen en dan weer een kaart en dan weer een art journal te maken.
In de afgelopen jaren ben ik ook workshops gaan geven, en dat doe ik met
erg veel plezier.

Sinds 2009 bied ik op mijn blog een maandelijkse challenge aan. Daarbij
laat ik ook zien wat er zoal mogelijk is met stempels, inkt en papier.
Ik ben dus op verschillende manieren bezig met mijn hobby en niet
alleen vind ik het heerlijk om er zelf mee bezig te zijn, ook het contact met
andere bloggers is geweldig.Dat maakt de hobby nóg leuker: het samen delen.

#4 Techniques with Distress Ink /

Technieken met Distress inkt

Marit asked me as a guest to write a blog post for Quirky Dutch Summer.
Of course I was very honored and I immediately said yes. The idea soon
emerged that it had to be about techniques using distress ink.

Marit heeft mij gevraagd om een blogbericht te verzorgen voor de Quirky
Dutch Summer. Natuurlijk was ik zeer vereerd en heb ik meteen ja gezegd.
Het idee was al gauw ontstaan, iets met distress-inkt.

In the first post of this series, Marit showed what you can do to fill the
blank page. My goal is to use different techniques with distress ink – as
much as possible  – on one sheet of paper. This way you get a nice overview
of all the possibilities with distress ink and you end up with a nice ‘reference
page.’

Marit liet in blogbericht 1 van deze serie zien wat je allemaal kunt doen
om het witte vel papier dat je voor je hebt liggen doelgericht of juist niet
doelgericht, te vullen. Mijn doel is om op één vel papier zoveel mogelijk
distress inkt technieken te gebruiken. Op deze manier krijg je een mooi
overzicht van wat er zoal mogelijk is met distress-inkt en heb je een leuk
en mooi naslagwerk.

Most of us own at least 2 colours of distress ink. Maybe you bought it because
a friend persuaded you with her enthusiasm about the stuff, but you haven’t
used it as much as you planned. Or maybe you are a real fan and have a big
collection that goes over 40 colours … Never mind how little or how much
you own, I am going to show you what you can do with distress ink.

Bijna iedereen heeft wel 2 kleuren distress-inkt. Een keer overgehaald door enthousiaste verhalen en toen 2 kleurtjes gekocht maar er misschien toch niet
zoveel mee gedaan dan je van plan was. Of misschien ben je wel een echte fan
en heb je inmiddels al een verzameling van richting de 40 kleurtjes …
Ik wil jullie laten zien wat er zoal mogelijk is met distress inkt.

I used the colours: salty ocean and mowed lawn. In addition, I will use sponges/inktapplicators, masking tape, mini mister, waterpen, acrylic block,
clear embossingpoeder, gesso, glimmer mist, brayer (hand roller) and a
template. The stamps are a series of flowers from Crafty Individuals.

Ik gebruik de kleuren: salty ocean en mowed lawn. Daarnaast zal ik gebruik
maken van sponsjes/inktapplicators, maskertape, minimister, waterpen,
acrylblok, clear embossingpoeder, gesso, glimmermist, brayer (handroller)
en een mal. Als stempels heb ik de bloemenset gebruikt van Crafty Individuals.

Use a large piece of paper.
I used a piece of thick, blank paper, 9.45 x 9.45. inch

Gebruik een groot vel papier.
Ik heb een blanco vel, 24 x 24 cm, 120 grams gebruikt.

Step 1: Use masking tape (a kind of memo paper with a sticky back)
to cover parts of the paper in a way that you create several blocks.
You can also use a larger piece of paper to cover a bigger part.

Keep the inks and  ink applicators at hand for step 2.

Stap 1: Plak met behulp van maskertape (een soort van memoblaadje,
maar dat dan helemaal aan de achterzijde kleeft) gedeelten van het papier af,
zodat je verschillende blokken krijg. Gebruik een stuk papier om een groter
deel af te plakken.

De kleuren inkt en de inktapplicators liggen al klaar voor stap 2.

Step 2: sponging and stamping with distress ink, water droplets
and stamping with water.

Sponge the left part of the paper (use a sponge or an ink applicator)
and let the colors blend from light to dark. Ink the stamp with the same
color ink and press it several times on the distress ink -subsurface (possibly
without adding more ink). Use a waterpen to remove some of the ink in
the images.

Stap 2: sponsen en stempelen met distress-inkt, waterdruppels en
stempelen met water

Spons het linker vlak (met een sponsje of een inkt applicator) en laat daarbij
het verloop zien van licht naar donker. Beïnkt de stempel met dezelfde kleur
inkt en druk het verschillende keren op de distress ondergrond af (eventueel
zonder tussentijds bij te inkten). Kleur bij enkele afdrukken met de waterpen
de bloemblaadjes in, door met water de inkt van de stempel afdruk  in de bloemblaadjes uit te vegen.

Put embossing ink on your stamp. Then spray a little water on it and
press the stamp on the distress ink-surface. Now you get an aqueous
stamped image. This can also be done without embossing ink, but by
using it, you get a slightly less vague stamped image.

Spray a little water in your hands, clap your hands above the paper so
that a few drops fall on your paper.

Beïnkt de stempel met embossing inkt, spray er een beetje water op en
druk de stempel op de distress ondergrond. Je krijgt nu een waterige
stempelafdruk. Dit kan ook zonder embossing inkt, maar met embossing
inkt krijg je een iets minder vage stempelafdruk.

Spray een beetje water in je handen, klap boven het papier in je handen
en laat zo een paar druppels op je papier vallen.

Step 3: inking your stamp with 2 colors ink and spraying with water

Put two colors of ink on your stamp. Spray a little water on the stamp and
press it onto the paper.

Stap 3: stempel beïnkten met 2 kleuren inkt en sprayen met water

Beïnkt de stempel met 2 kleuren inkt en spray er een beetje water op.
Druk vervolgens de stempel op het papier.

Step 4: create a background with 2 colors of ink, water and an acrylic block

Press you inkpad on the acrylic block, do so with 2 different colors.
Spray water on the acrylic block and press it on to the paper. On the photo,
you can see the ink with the water ‘move’ on the paper under the acrylic block.

Stap 4: achtergrond maken met 2 kleuren inkt, water en een acrylblok

Druk met de inktpad op het acrylblok, doe dit met 2 kleuren.
Spray er water op en druk je acrylblok op het papier. Je  kunt op de foto zien
dat de inkt met het water onder het acrylblok op het papier “beweegt”.

On the next photo you can see the result of step 4 (you can possibly let
the ink dry faster by using a heat tool)

Op de volgende foto zie je het resultaat van stap 4 (eventueel kun je
de inkt sneller laten drogen door een heattool te gebruiken)

Step 5: distress ink and clear embossingpoeder

Stap 5: distress-inkt en clear embossingpoeder

I diveded the narrow strip next (left) to the acrylic block into two rectangles.

Het smalle strookje naast de acrylblokafdruk heb ik verdeeld in twee vlakken.

For the top rectangle: Ink your stamp with embossing ink and stamp on
to the paper. Sprinkle clear embossing powder over it. Remove the excess
powder and heat the images. Then sponge 1 or 2 color distress ink on the
embossed images. The images will come forward (contrast) against the
colored paper.

Het bovenste vlak: beïnkt de stempel met embossing inkt en druk het af
op het papier. Strooi er clear embossingpoeder overheen, klop het overtollige
poeder af en verhit het. Spons vervolgens met 1 of 2 kleuren distress inkt
over de stempelafdrukken. De afdrukken komen naar voren in de kleur
van het papier.

For the other rectangle: Inkt you stamp with distress ink and press it
on the white surface. Sprinkle clear embossing powder over it and remove
the excess. Then heat it. The flower now comes forward in the color of the
ink with an extra (embossing) layer.

Het onderste vlak: beïnkt de stempel met distress-inkt en druk het af op
de witte ondergrond. Strooi er clear embossingpoeder overheen, klop het
overtollige poeder af en verhit het. De bloem komt nu in de kleur van de
inkt naar voren met een laagje.

Step 6: distress ink and gesso

Cover the paper just here and there with gesso (do not cover the
whole surface.) I used the side of an acrylic block for this. Dry with
a heat tool. Sponge ink over it and then use a baby cloth to gently wipe
off the ink of the gesso-parts. Stamp some extra images, using the same
ink color, on the background.

Stap 6: distress-inkt en gesso

Bestrijk het vlak op enkele plaatsen met gesso (hiervoor heb ik een
zijkant van een acrylblok gebruikt.) Droog dit met de heattool.
Spons er met inkt overheen en haal voorzichtig met een babydoekje
de inkt van de gesso-delen. Beïnkt de stempel met dezelfde inkt en
stempel over de achtergrond.

Step 7: distress ink and glimmer mist

Spray some glimmer mist on your craftsheet. Press your stamp
in the glimmer mist and press it one time on your craftsheet before
you stamp on the distress ink-surface. This way, you don get a clear
image but it gives a nice effect. (see strip in the bottom right)

Stap 7: distress-inkt en glimmermist

Spuit wat glimmermist op je craftsheet. Druk je stempel in de glimmermist
en druk het één keer op je craftsheet af voor je afdrukt op de distress
ondergrond. Het wordt zo geen duidelijke stempelafdruk, maar het geeft
wel een leuk effect. (zie de strook rechtsonder)

Step 8: I removed all the masking paper and tape and now there is
one, large rectangular left to work on. I divide it in half.

Stap 8: Als het maskertape is weggehaald, blijft er nog een groot,
wit vlak over. Dat deel ik weer in tweeën.

Step 9: distress ink and water

Sponge the bottom part with distress ink. Spray a little water
on the craftsheet and roll the brayer through the water. Then
roll the brayer over the distress ink-surface. A few blue ink droplets
remained on the brayer – roll those on the blank strip above.

Stap 9: distress-inkt en water

Spons het onderste deel met distress inkt. Spray een beetje water
op de craftsheet en haal daar je brayer doorheen. Ga vervolgens met
de brayer over de distress ondergrond. Er blijven een paar blauwe
inktdruppels aan de brayer hangen, rol die van je brayer af door over
het smalle strookje erboven te rollen.

Step 10: colorizing with distress ink

Press the inkpad on your acrylic block so you can use that
as your palette. Put the template on your paper. Use a waterpen
to color the letters.

Stap 10: inkleuren met distress-inkt

Druk de inktpad op je acrylblok. Leg de mal op je papier en kleur
de letters in door met je waterpen inkt van je acrylblok te halen.
Je gebruikt de acrylblok als het ware als palet.

Step 11: create a background with distress ink and water
on your craftsheet

Press 2 different color inkpads on your craftsheet and spray
a little water on it. Press a piece of paper on the ink, possibly turn,
and repeat this operation until you’re satisfied with the results.
You can use a heat tool in between to dry. Try also to “pick up the
ink drops” with your piece of paper.

Stap 11: achtergrond maken met distress-inkt en water
op je craftsheet

Druk van 2 kleuren inkt de inktpad op je craftsheet en spuit er
water op. Duw een stukje papier op de inkt, draai eventueel en
herhaal deze handeling tot je tevreden bent met het resultaat.
Tussendoor kun je drogen met de heattool. Je kunt de druppels
inkt ook “oppakken” door het papier voorzichtig op de druppels
de duwen.

Stamp with black ink, cut out the images and color the edges
with distress ink.

Stempel de afbeelding met zwarte inkt. Knip de plaatjes uit en
geef de randen kleur met distress-inkt.

Step 12: colorizing with distress ink and a sponge

Stamp your images with black ink and color them with distress ink
from the inside tot he outside using a sponge. Cut out the images
and color the edges with distress ink.

Stap 12: inkleuren met distress inkt en sponsjes

Stempel de afbeelding met zwarte inkt. Kleur deze vervolgens van
binnen naar buiten door te sponsen met distress inkt. Knip de afbeelding
uit en kleur de randen met distress-inkt.

Glue the cut out images from step 11 and 12 in the large rectangle.

Plak de uitgeknipte bloemen van stap 11 en 12 in het grote vlak.

Step 13: Finishing touches

Finally, draw “messy” lines between the different rectangles by
using a fineliner. Write with each section the used technique.
Now you have a nice overview of all the techniques and possibilities
that you can do with distress ink.
(I used a ‘chipped saphire’ distress-marker).

Stap 13: Afwerking

Tot slot: trek met een fineliner “slordige” lijnen tussen de verschillende
vlakken. Schrijf bij ieder onderdeel de gebruikte techniek, zodat je een
mooi overzicht hebt van (een kleine greep uit) de vele mogelijkheden
met distress-inkt (ik heb hier een distress-marker in de kleur ‘chipped
saphire’ gebruikt).

As you can see: even if you use different techniques, by using the same
ink (and stamps) the total remains a beautiful and coherent whole.

So: get out your distress ink, choose 2 colors, grab a large sheet of paper
and go play! Of course you do not need to do all the steps I showed, but
the more steps you do, the more you get an impression of the possibilities
with distress ink. I sometimes get the question: can this be done with
other brands of ink as well? Yes, sure! As long as it is ink that responds
to water. But once you’ve noticed how beautiful the colors of the distress
ink blend and go together you might get hooked. It also is cheaper than,
for example, Adirondac-ink. Be warned, once you start using distress ink
it is very difficult to resist the temptation to purchase more colors …

Zoals je kunt zien: ook al gebruik je verschillende technieken, door het
gebruik van dezelfde inkt (en stempels) blijft het een mooi geheel.

Dus: haal de distress-inkt tevoorschijn, neem 2 kleuren, pak een groot
vel papier en leef je uit! Je hoeft natuurlijk niet alle stappen te doen, maar
hoe meer stappen je doet, hoe meer je een indruk krijgt wat er allemaal
met distress inkt kan. Ik krijg wel eens de vraag: maar kan dit ook met
andere inkten? Ja hoor, tuurlijk! Als het maar een inkt is die reageert op
water. Maar als je eenmaal gemerkt hebt hoe mooi de kleuren van distress
inkt op elkaar zijn afgestemd en hoe fijn het werken is met distress ink –
én dat het goedkoper is dan bijvoorbeeld Adirondac-inkt … wees dan
gewaarschuwd want het is heel moeilijk om de verleiding te weerstaan
en niet nog meer kleurtjes aan te schaffen…

I always have a piece of paper lying on the table to test techniques
and try new things. This is the result of all my experiments.

Ik heb altijd een proefblaadje naast mijn werk op tafel liggen
om dingen uit te proberen. Dit is het resultaat van alle probeersels.

You can use parts of this paper to make, for example, a card
or an ATC. Let me show you what I made with this left over test paper.

Van dit proefblaadje kun je weer delen gebruiken voor bijvoorbeeld
een kaart of een ATC.
