I looked up my stack of Index Cards and decided to play along with ICAD (“Index Card A Day”) – this annual event is facilitated by Daisy Yellow and although I might not create 61 cards in total, I like to have the stack of index cards on my table for a quick ‘in between’ scribble when I am not working on art journal pages or feel stuck. Creating these cards clear my head while I still stay creative – an excellent way to keep the mojo flowing!

Now I do of course have my Box of Longing – filled with index cards ‘my way’ – that I could consummate with some more cards but I decided to stick to the ICAD prompts and leave the Box of Longing alone….

Daisy Yellow provides a week theme with 7 prompts (one for each day) and started last Monday. I will show you my index cards on Fridays which means there will be 2 created with the before week-theme and 5 with the new theme (that is, if I manage to create a card every day.) Today there’s only 5 to show (because, like I said, it started on Monday.) Here we go…

Week 1 – Theme: Drawing & Doodling
ICAD #1 – Chevron

Plain and simple. Cut out text, stamps and black marker.

Week 1 – Theme: Drawing & Doodling
ICAD #2 – Carnival

Black fine-liner, colored pencils.

Week 1 – Theme: Drawing & Doodling
ICAD #3 – Draw a Map

Map of our apartment; color pencils and fine-liner for lettering.

Week 1 – Theme: Drawing & Doodling
ICAD #4 – Mailbox

Living in an apartment building is so much different than the house I lived in before – take alone the mailbox(es.) Quick sketch with a pencil.

Week 1 – Theme: Drawing & Doodling
ICAD #5 – Owl

Based on a Native American totem pole. Black markers and felt tip pens. (It kinda looks like a picture from a coloring book isn’t it?)

Today is going to be a hot day in the Netherlands… the weather forecast predicts over 30 degrees Celsius! At the moment it looks a bit cloudy but the temperatures are already rising so I don’t think I will be in my atelier much today. There’s a lot I want to get done though but I can work on that in the weekend when the temperatures drop. I’m gonna enjoy this day in the sun!

Thanks for stopping by my blog, hope you all have a great weekend.

I was way behind on The Documented Life Project and had to catch up at least three challenges (and on Saturday it increased to four even, as each Saturday, the new week-challenge is posted on Art to the 5th – the site where you can find all challenges.) But last weekend I found the time to dive into it and I created up a storm in my atelier… yep, I finished three art journal pages with the prompts! I even remembered to take in-between photos when I worked on challenge #9 so you can see how I build up at least 5 layers on my page (that was the prompt – I used more layers even.)

February 28
February Theme: Layers You Will Love!
Art Challenge: Using at Least Five Layers
Journal Prompt: Give Me a High Five

Layer 1: The ‘blank’ page is not blank because I work on old book pages. I used machine stitching on the former page (DLP #8, see this post) and so my first layer is already there!

Layer 2: I used some bright colors of acrylic paint to fill in the stitched rectangles.

Layer 3: I glued rice paper on the page and scratched some of the paper away with a craft knife.

Layer 4: I grabbed my new stencil and sprayed with yellow, red and green (dylusions) spray ink. The absorbent rice paper made the ink run which resulted in blurred lines.

Layer 5: The stenciled images were just too much, so I covered part of it under a layer of gesso.

Layer 6: Next I glued some left over pieces from a gelatin mono-print to the page.

Layer 7: I smeared some white paint through a dotted stencil to add more texture. (The underneath ink made the paint turn a bit green, an effect I like.)

Layer 8: Then I stamped a border to the left and some spirals with my hand-carved stamps.

Nearly done… the page needed some contrast so I doodled some extra circles with a marker and outlined the stenciled images. Finally, I wrote text around the big circle. (part of a quote by Ellen DeGeneres “It’s our challenges and obstacles that give us layers of depth and make us interesting.”

So – how many layers are there on this page? Does the doodling and writing count as a layer? It’s 9 then! Here’s the finished page.

As I said, I finished more pages but I show you those some other time. Wednesday maybe? Stay tuned!
