Sometimes things don’t go quite the way you thought they would, but by
giving it a twist and turning it around you can make them into something
even better then you planned in the first place…

A disappointing number of three (yes, 3!) people registered for the
‘workshop by the sea’.

As the date approached – and no new registrations were added – I had to
make a decision: cancel the workshop weekend or – despite the small group –
go for it and transform the weekend into something even more creative…
I choose the latter.

I informed the women about it and one lady withdrew, but the other two
got all enthusiastic when they heard it would be a more intimate weekend.
After all, with such a small ‘group’ they would have the opportunity to learn
more complicated techniques.

The workshop weekend finally came.
I met Elvy and Margot – two friends that were my ‘students’ last weekend
– and we had a blast!

We made a small book with a ‘secret folded spine’ (similar to the one I show
in the video in this post), we carved stamps, the poet Johanna Kruit taught
a haiku workshop, we did some more bookbinding, we transferred magazine
images, we worked on different art journal pages and ofcourse we went for
a long walk on the dunes and beach.

This photo impression tells it all
(photos taken by me, Johanna, Elvy and Margot)

Here’s a book I made to show Elvy and Margot how to bind the pages.

(Size: 13 x 17 cm - 5.12 x 6.7 inch)

The pages in this book are alternately made out of blank paper and
scrapbook paper. Margot had brought some acrylic paint in marvelous
colours with her, and I tried all the colours in different combinations
on the blank pages.

It turned out to be one happy, colourful book!
It will be so much fun working in it!

I didn’t manage to work on my ‘chronicles page’ in the weekend…
so I made this spread today! (that’s why I’m blogging late)

The Chronicles of Marit – Week 45

(23 x 31 cm - 9.1 x 12.2 inch)

After a long, creative weekend the daily routine still has to settle in…
but I’m sure tomorrow everything will be ‘back to normal’.

I wish you all a lovely week!
(Turn disappointments into opportunities!)

(My son found a room in one of those big, old houses in the city where
he studies, and will be moving out on November 1st…)

Although this isn’t a haiku, I do put a link to ‘Haiku my Heart‘.
I’m sure the participants will forgive me for publishing this poem today.

..

Last week, I stepped out of my art journals and worked on canvas!
I found some old panels and one bigger canvas and I decided to give it a go…

I call my series Brave Women

Each canvas is 24 x 30 cm - 9.4 x 12 inch

Used materials/techniques: vintage cloth pattern (thank you Rosie!),
Adirondack spray ink (egg plant, cranberry, bottle, lettuce, butterscotch,
terra cotta), Mod Podge (to transfer the texts), cut out images from a
vintage 'Live' magazine.

Gertrude Stein

‘Rose is a rose is a rose is a rose’

Martha – ‘Calamity Jane’ – Jane Cannary

‘Men looked on me as being a good fellow,
and they knew that I never missed my mark’

Georgia O’Keeffe

‘I feel there is something unexplored about woman
that only a woman can explore’

After gluing on the pics and transferring the text, I realised that I like the way
transfers look much better than the actual picture. The way the background
shimmers through and all….

… so for the bigger canvas, I decided to also transfer the photo.

Janis Joplin

‘Don’t compromise yourself
You are all you’ve got’

30 x 40 cm - 12 x 15.7 inch

Used materials/techniques: vintage cloth pattern, Acrylic paint,
Caran d'Ache watersoluble crayons, Adirondack spray ink, Mod Podge,
Image of Janis cut out of an old magazine and transferred onto canvas.

Brave women… I guess I will be added to the series myself in a week or two.
Letting loose of your child is a bitter-sweet experience and takes bravery too,
so although next days/weeks won’t be as hectic and filled with deadlines as
the last couple of weeks, there will be other things going on.

I do hope to visit your blogs in between though…
Enjoy your weekend dear ones.
Try making a canvas!
