Time flies, and it seems so long ago that I finished the ‘April drawings’… yet it is only two weeks since I drew the last sketch with the prompts Roxanne Coble provided. I bound all the drawings into a journal, and today I show you the last drawings I made and the journal.

Day 26: A Dead President
I am NOT good at drawing faces, especially the mouth is a problem. This is Nelson Mandela… when you keep your hand over the mouth you will see that the eyes and part of the nose is alright but the mouth is so wrong. I need to practice drawing faces more!

Day 27: Skeleton Key

Day 28: Villain

Day 29: Hands
(I created a so-called “blind drawing”)

Day 30: Favorite moment from April

This drawing needs explanation:

When my son was young, we sometimes bought him a chocolate ‘children surprise egg’… the chocolate egg contains a plastic container with a little toy.

My son and I played a lot of “Zelda” video games on my Nintendo game cube. We are both fan of these adventure games.

I started (re-)playing the Zelda games this year. My son is 23 years old and lives on his own now, but when he heard I was playing again he planned a visit to come play ‘Zelda’ with me.

And now the fun story: I bought a tiny, little plastic ‘Zelda doll’ and a chocolate ‘surprise egg’. I carefully removed the foil package and cut open the egg. I replaced the little toy in the egg for the little Zelda doll, and ‘glued’ the egg together with chocolate. I put the foil around it and it looked just like new…
When Nout came to visit I poured him tea and gave him the egg… with a neutral face saying: for old times sake, we bought you an egg just like you were young….

He, of course, ate the chocolate but wasn’t much interested in the toy… but he finally opened the plastic container just out of curiosity and couldn’t believe his eyes when he found the Zelda doll… “How did that get in there…????”

It’s my favorite moment from April!

The drawings are all made on old book paper that I gessoed. I made a cover out of a piece of cardboard and an old shopping bag. I wanted to keep it simple so I just stamped a title on the cover (“vingeroefeningen” means something like “skill exercises.”)

I bound the pages with a blue waxed thread using the Coptic stitch

I haven’t drawn since I finished the April challenge… I should though ’cause it’s good to practice, but right now my focus has shifted to abstract collage. What are you working on lately?

Thanks for stopping by my blog today.

Everyone who is interested in art journaling and searches the internet,
sooner or later will bump onto Kate Crane and her blog ‘ The Kathryn Wheel ‘.
Kate is a well-known art journaler and I’m very happy that she, despite her
undoubtedly busy schedule, was excited and found time to write a guest post.

Exclusive for the Quirky Dutch Summer Series she made a ‘ Summer journal ‘
and a tutorial to go with it. The result is a cheerful, bright and colourful (how
could it be otherwise … we’re talking Kate Crane here!) ‘Summer journal.’
I wish you lots of fun with this tutorial and am already looking forward to see
all your ‘ Summer journals ‘. And now, I let Kate take over my blog from here…
go ahead girl!

belanden.

‘Summer journals’. Ik geef nu alle ruimte aan Kate… go ahead girl!

I just love to journal by everyday happenings, and I wouldn’t dream of
going away with out a small journal to capture those every day moments.
This year I made myself a special journal for the summer using a variety
of inky techniques with the gorgeous and colourful ink sprays by Dylusions.

Be warned: this is messy work!

Wees gewaarschuwd: dit is kliederwerk!

I began by cutting some white A4 card into quarters to make the pages.

Ink sprays can be sprayed directly onto the card and they will begin to
blend by themselves. I sprayed this page, blotted with kitchen towel and
then flicked water directly from my hand and blotted again to make some
background texture.

Postbox Red, Bubblegum Pink, Pure Sunshine

Another way to add ink to a page is to spray ink directly onto a craft mat,
and then ‘smoosh’ your card through it. This method blends the colours
perfectly! On this page I sprayed water through a Dylusions stencil and
then blotted off the water a few seconds later – a technique developed
by Dyan Reaveley, known as ‘ghosting’.

Vibrant Turquoise, Fresh Lime

If you add a just a touch of black to one of these bright colours, it has a
dramatic effect, and immediately gives a darker tone and more grungy feel.

Fresh Lime, Black Marble

On the following page I used a similar method to Tim Holtz’s wrinkle-free
Distress Technique. I began by spraying ink directly onto a craft mat, and
then smooshed the page through. After blotting, I repeatedly pressed the
page down to pick up left-over ink, and dried with a heat gun between layers.
Finally I splashed water over it and blotted off the excess to create even
more texture.

of keukenpapier. Zo ontstaat een mooie textuur.

London Blue, Vibrant Turquoise

You can repeat these techniques with several more pages, using different
colour combinations, to build up a good selection of pages for your journal.

The next step on several of my pages was to spray ink through a stencil in
random places. Notice how the light ink on a darker background still shows up.

But don’t waste any ink left on your stencil! Each time you have sprayed
ink through a stencil, you can flip it over to get the revers image, and then
use any excess on a spare blank page. This will make a page in itself!

My next step was to lay all of my pages out on my craft mat and push
gesso through a stencil with an old credit card, in one or two random
places on each page, using a variety of different stencils:

I also dug out all of my favourite stamps and stamped on each page to add
more interest to the background. I didn’t think about it too much – I just
stamped away!! You can add anything else you like at this stage – you may
notice a few bottle lid stamps and a few splats on my pages.

Stamps: 7gypsies, Tim Holtz, Tuscan Rose Stencils: The Crafters Workshop & Dylusions

Because I am such a messy worker (!) I covered the back of each page
with old book pages, and then created pockets at the lower edge by cutting
one of my finished pages into three sections, perfect for holding photos,
notes, journaling tags etc

I added some Chit Chat words by Tim Holtz to the page I wanted as my
front cover, and mounted this page onto chipboard for a bit of strength.

I decided to bind my pages together with book rings because this gives me
the freedom to remove pages for stitching onto, and also to add more pages,
because in time I’m sure I’ll want to!

..

..

Thank you so much for this inspirational, bright and fun tutorial Kate.
My fingers itch to make me a Summer journal too. With still no Summer
weather outside, we will make the sun shine in our own homes with this!

Remember this?

It’s the unfinished page
I made for A Year in
the Life of an Art Journal.

I wrote in this blogpost
how I struggled with the
prompt, and in the end
I left the page unfinished
and moved on…

… to come back to it
last weekend!

I had some spare time and decided to start working on the AYITLOAAJ
prompt for July 30th… that’s a bit early maybe, but it bothered me that
I skipped the last one and I wanted to really be in time with a page for the
next prompt and have a page to show by the end of July.
After all, I am a guest host at A Year in the Life of an Art Journal! (For the
curious ones: my prompts will be up in September and November)

So I took my ‘A Year…’ art journal and yep, I came across that unfinished
‘thing’ again. I almost flipped the page, but I can’t stand ‘unfinished bussiness’
so I hold still and looked at it for a while.

Fresh eyes – and I suddenly knew what to do!

The title of the prompt was ‘Broken’…
this page was unfinished and ‘broken’…

So I ‘repaired’ it!

(21 x 19,5 cm - 8.3 x 7.7 inch)

It still isn’t the best page I ever made, but it’s OK now.
(and yes, I finished the next one too. I’m more satisfied
about that page but it won’t be online before July 30th)

My son was here last week (he left last Friday for a holiday in Portugal)
and we took the opportunity to watch one documentary/film each night
from his DVD box ‘The Blues’ (Each movie is made by a different director,
Scorsese, Eastwood etc. and handles a period or aspect of the blues)

We also had the movie ‘Cadillac records’ on DVD so we watched that too.

“Cadillac Records is a 2008 musical biopic written and directed by
Darnell Martin. The film explores the musical era from the early 1940s
to the late 1960s, chronicling the life of the influential Chicago-based
record-company executive Leonard Chess, and the musicians who
recorded for Chess Records” – Wikipedia –

Being all into ‘the blues’ last week, I couldn’t help that some things
came straight on the weekly page of my chronicles. I glued the image
of Adrien Brody there because he plays ‘Lenny Chess’ in the movie…

The Chronicles of Marit – Week 29

(30 x 21 cm - 11.8 x 8.3 inch)

The lovely postcard I received last week (You can click on the image
to enlarge) is made by the awesome and talented Deb Christensen
from Dye-ing to be yours. I just had to include it on the page!
I made a plastic envelope to put it in.

(30 x 21 cm - 11.8 x 8.3 inch)

Here’s the page without the postcard. You can still read the journaling
and guess what was hidden behind the mermaid…?
A sneaky scuba diver! Love it!

Last week, my blogfriend Sandra celebrated her 40th birthday.
I am waaaaaay older than her, and so are my braincells ’cause I had
another date in mind… to be honest, I thought her birthday was today!

Anyway, the card that I made her is double fitting.
That is from ME (with braincells as wrinkled as the face of that woman)
to SANDRA (with shiny and joyful and hard working braincells)

Happy NON-birthday dear!

(21 x 15 cm – 8.3 x 5.8 inch)

You noisy ones probably want to read the quote that I journaled on the card.
I don’t want to have you all hanging sideways in front of the computer screen
to try and read it, so here it is:

‘Het komt er niet op aan hoe oud men is doch hoe men oud is’

It’s a bit difficult to translate, but it has more or less the following meaning:
“It doesn’t matter what your age is but how you come to age/how you
act on your age.”

And that was it for now dear ones!
Thanks for stopping by, I always love to see you come visit and comment.
I know you love to see me visiting YOUR blogs too, but I have little time
at the moment so it may take a while before I’m caught up in blog reading.
I will try though, sweeties, I will try…

Have a nice week!
