Today I want to talk about art journaling. This way of creating-in-a-book has taken a fight over the last years. More and more people started drawing, pasting, painting, splashing and make collages in journals…. mumerous art journal groups can be found on Facebook, stores sell all kinds of ’empty books’ and bullet journals – often with fitting sticker-sheets and ‘how to’ worksbooks to get you started and there are a lot of ‘handlettering’ books for sale.

QDS #7. Art JOURNALING

First of all, yet again the (a) definition of art journaling because some of you might wonder: what is an art journal?

“An art journal, or artist’s journal, is a book kept by an artist as a visual, and sometimes verbal, record of her thoughts and ideas. Art journals generally combine visual journaling and writing, to create finished pages. Every imaginable style, media and technique is used by art journalists. When it comes to the types of work represented in artist journals, there really aren’t any rules, and each book is as unique as the artist who created it.” (Source: Mixed Media Club – Lisa Vollrath)

“Drawing, pasting, painting, splashing…” in my introduction I am talking about ART journaling. The ‘art’ part is something that most of us know how to handle. We cut, tear and glue. We stamp and stencil. We use collage, paint and ink spray. We splash and splatter… but then what? “Oh… there has to be some text on the page as well… uuhrrrmm….” and then we block. Most people go look for a quote. Or a word. We take our handlettering book (or look online) and draw the letters as nice as we can. Or we cut out a nice phrase from a magazine and glue it onto our art journal page. Done! And yes, you can even leave your page without texts, why not? After all, it is YOUR journal. You can do (or leave out) whatever you want on those pages. That’s exactly what makes art journaling so attractive and anyone can do it.

But what if….

… what if you want to take your pages a bit further. What if you want your journal to be ‘more realistic, more personal, more YOU’ – how can you accomplish that?

Your own style

I will now show you four pages made by well known art journalers. (I will not put the artist names with the photos, so you can play a little ‘quiz’ if you like… do you know the names of the artists?)

Above pages have something in common: none of the pages includes text (except some random letters, a stand-alone word or scribbling that looks like text but isn’t – or is unreadable…)

Above pages have something else in common: the art journalers who created the pieces (respectively: Tamara “Willowing” Laporte, Marieke Blokland, Dyan Reaveley & Dina Wakley) all have developed their own style. A style of creating that is so recognizable that their art hardly needs to be signed. The art IS their signature! (Did you recognize the styles and were you able to put the right name on it? That proves my contention then.)

One doesn’t develop a style overnight. It’s something that takes time, that has to grow on you. So where do you start?

Especially when you are a beginner at art journaling, you can quickly get overwhelmed by all the examples you see on the internet. There are so many possibilities, so many techniques, so many materials that you can use… what will fit YOU? It is best when you just start using materials or a technique you are drawn to. Play with it. The most important thing is that you have fun. When you create in your journal on a regular base, you will notice a certain preference for materials and ways of creating… your own style starts to show and develop there but hey, even if you just started your art journal journey, as a beginner you can add your personality and your own story to the pages right now. Your style may not be clear to you yet but there is a way to make your pages more personal.

Journaling

If you don’t have a clear ‘art-signature’ yet and still want to see your personality reflect in your journal, the easiest way to do that and make your pages personal is: WRITE! I can hear you moaning now: “write… You call that easy?” Don’t get scared… you don’t have to fill your pages with writing (although you can of course.) A short sentence, something you over heard, a (chat)conversation or a list… there are so many possibilities to give your pages that personal touch with adding only a few words… that is, when the words come from YOU! I’ll show you some examples of that and then put you to work, ok?!

Julie Ann Shahin (she does not blog anymore but is in Tangie Baxter’s Design Team. You can see some of her art HERE )

It might well be that Julie Ann created this spread (a spread is a ‘double page’) on Mother’s day – there’s a hand lettered quote on the left side but the note to her mum, that she wrote on the right page, is what makes this page personal!

Teesha Moore is a famous (and one of the most copied) art journaler, her style is unmistakable. Do her admirers also read the text that she writes on her collages? The stories she adds are often about simple, daily things. Those are the sort of stories that you type in that box when you login to social media and Facebook asks you: “What are you doing?” Instead of typing on your timeline, you can also write it on an art journal page. It does make your page personal and extra special!

Fidgetrainbowtree (Polly-Lee Harvey) often uses ‘printables’ or ‘collage sheets.’ A collage sheet is a collection of images arranged on a single sheet, intended for printing. You can purchase those digital sheets online (pay for it or get them for free) and use the images on your pages. The image of the lady with the pink cheeks may well come from such a sheet, but I want to point out the text on this page: just random thoughts jotted down on the page – however, those are HER words and it makes the page hers, and hers only.

(By the way: nice collage sheets can be bought – amongst other sites and shops – here: Mischief Circus but you can also find a whole lot of copyright-free images that you can use for free when you google free collage sheets)

The next spread is created by an art journaler I admire: Lisa Cheney. (I link her name to her Facebook profile. You can find her blog here but the last blogpost is from 2016.) Lisa always uses texts on her pages, sometimes it doesn’t seem much but when you look closely you find short sentences and texts all over the page, sometimes partly hidden under a layer of paint. These sentences may not sound disturbing at first but in combination with the images her pages always bring across an emotion that the viewer ‘feels’ right away. Lisa’s way of art journaling leans towards ‘raw’ or ‘extreme’ journaling – a term used for “naked, real, strong emotions in a journal.”

An ‘extreme journaler’ is Juliana Coles. (You find more about extreme journaling here.) The portrait fills most of the page but the text, however, tells the story with makes the face and the look in those eyes touch deeply. In just sixteen words, Juliana throws her impotence on the page… pure and raw as it is.

Above examples show rather short texts but when you are a (diary) writer like Judy Wise your page will be full of writing. When there’s so much text on a page it starts to look like a pattern, a background to the images. This art journal spread is created in 2008. It was around that time that I discovered Judy’s blog online and started my own “Chronicles” art journal series. Nowadays Judy creates abstract paintings on canvas and she has not posted an art journal page for years… I wonder if she still works in journals as well.

Now it’s your turn to write!

Don’t chicken out now… I am not going to throw you in the deep end without giving you some tips and trics. Here are some distinct examples on how to use your own words in your art journal and tell your own story on the page.

1. One sentence that says it all

Sometimes, one sentence (or a short chat-conversation) is enough to ‘tell the story’. Use the text from a little note, a sentence from a conversation you had, the word your beloved (or kids) uses all the time – I’m sure words like that will bring the story behind it back to you when you read it years later.

My (Marit) Chronicles pages show sometimes a lot and sometimes a bit less text. This particular spread was made in 2013 and I show it because of one sentence on it…

“Well ma’m, you are certainly not a crybaby” – that was what the dentist said to me when I refused to have anesthetic when he had to drill a tooth. Although I tell a bit more about my dentist visit on the page, it’s that one sentence that is enough to remember the occasion and him saying it.

2. Automatic or intuitive writing

I am what you could call a “voluminous writer” and it’s not unusual for me to write a full page – hence the next image. This way of writing is called automatic, or intuitive writing. You find a lot about this technique online, for example HERE

3. Make a list

It’s always fun to have a list on your art journal page, and making a list is pretty personal (depending on the topic you choose of course) and it is easy to do. Years later, you can see what you listed about a certain topic. In 2015 I wrote a Quirky post about lists. You can find a list of topics to choose from in that post as well. The example I show you here was made in 2011 and how fun it is to look back to what I had on my ‘wish-list’ back then!

– Move back to Zeeland (check!)
– Live near the sea (check!)
– Have my own studio (check! I call it ‘atelier’ now)
– My family and loved ones to be healthy and happy (check!)
– Loose 3 kilo’s (6.6. lbs) (oops… I’ve grown – it is “loose 9 kilo’s – 19 lbs” now…)
– Meet some of my foreign blogfriends (I didn’t met foreign blogfriends yet but I did meet some Dutch blogfriends in real live who have become dear friends!)

4. Writing in response to a question or theme

Next is an old art journal spread (from 2009) I made with a ‘challenge’ … the question that had to be the kick start of your page was “what is your favorite car?” Nothing came to mind at first and I almost skipped the challenge, but then I thought a bit more out of the box and created a spread about my favorite way of ‘transport’ : walking! See? You can convert a question into something that fits YOU, that you feel comfortable talking/writing about. Just try to create a page with the question: “what is your favorite piece of clothing?”

5. Take a walk

This topic isn’t emotional, it isn’t ‘extreme’ and still very personal: write about a walk. Again, think out of the box. You can write about the route you take in the shop when you go shopping for weekly groceries or something (“I grab a shopping cart and head through the gates into the Walmart. First I go to the vegetable section ’cause I have guests coming for diner and want to cook something fresh. I am in doubt if I shall make a salad, like planned, or purchase the green beans instead, because those look really good…”. et cetera) or even a ‘walk’ through your own house (“at 7 a.m. I am wide awake and I have to pee… I tiptoe around the bed – my beloved is still sleeping like a baby – to the bathroom. There’s a toilet but I decide to take the other loo in the hallway so I won’t wake him up when I flush. I decide to not go back to bed but make coffee instead…” et. cetera.) A stroll along the sea-side, a hike in the woods, a walk through your town or your visit to a big city on holidays… there’s something to write about it all and use it in your art journal! You can decorate your page with maps or images from the places you went, but you can also decide to picture the ‘mood’ of the walk (lots of greens for a walk in the woods.)

Create an art journal page using your own words/texts

That shouldn’t be too difficult now… you can use the examples from this Quirky post to get you started but you can also go your own way… it’s totally up to you but remember: NO QUOTES, NO LYRICS, NO POEMS (apart from when you have written it yourself of course.)

Good luck and have fun!

“Tekenen, plakken, schilderen, spetteren…”

Mijn vader is stervende.”)

Mijn (Marit) eigen Chronicles pagina’s bevatten soms veel, soms weinig tekst.

2. Automatisch of intuïtief schrijven

4. Schrijven n.a.v. een vraag of thema

Of allebei.

Week after week I create a page in my “Chronicles” art journal. It’s the perfect place to play in, reflect on the past week and wind down…

I have been keeping (just writing) dairies since I was 10 years old, but the daily writing somehow stopped when I gave birth to my son (1992.) I wrote every now and then but not on a regular base anymore, and ultimately the writing stopped completely. However, after a few years I began to miss ‘documenting my life’ but I could not find a proper way that worked for me until I discovered the art journals of Judy Wise. The way Judy combined art with her daily stories spoke to me right away and I started my own ‘weekly art journal’ in April 2010. I simply called it ‘weekly art journal’ back then, but I changed the name to “Chronicles” in 2011 after I saw Michelle calling her personal journals that way. I liked that title instantly and I still do.

My way of working on the spreads changed over the years though. In the beginning I started by preparing the spread on Monday (creating the background and add the first images and text) and added some more to the page every day. After a few Months I found out that this way of working in the journal did not work for me. The spreads looked disjointed by the end of the week. Also, unexpected events could happen during the week and when it did, there was no room left on the pages to write about it because of what I added already. Another ‘problem’ I bumped on to was that the ‘feel’ of a week could change when the days went by. For instance, I would start with creating a bright, green or yellow background on a sunny Monday and then it would rain from Tuesday ’til Sunday… things like that changed my mood and by the end of the week the spread had the wrong ‘feel’. In the beginning I also felt the ‘obligation’ to journal about the things that happened on the dates… I did not ever skip a date (even when nothing mentionable happened.)

So, what’s different now?
I create my weekly page in one session at the end of the week (or later.) I have a piece of paper in my journal, on which I jot down the daily events so I won’t forget what I did on that date. When I start the new page, I read my notes and decide what I want to focus on. I also choose if I want to write a lot or keep it without (much) text. Sometimes the week can be described with a quote that ‘sums it all up’.

It all depends on the mood of the week ánd on my mood at the moment I start creating. I don’t limit myself anymore and I practice techniques, use pictures that I like (that don’t necessarily have something to do with the events of that week) and write as much or as little as I feel like. I pick colors depending on my mood or the weather. I use all kinds of techniques. The Chronicles art journal taught me to relax, loosen up, enjoy the process and play. Looking back on my Chronicles journals it is a mixed bag of pages and I like it that way!

Here are the latest pages

You know I am all into art journaling… and if you are too, I’m sure you have been to Tammy Garcia’s weblog Daisy Yellow before. Tammy invited me to write a guest post for her DPP (daily paper prompt) series and because I am not only into art journaling, but also into music ánd a fan of Tammy – I came up with a wonderful prompt! Well, at least I find it a wonderful prompt!

Hop on over to the Daily Paper Prompt Posts at Daisy Yellow to see my guest prompt and join the daily fun – Oh, and when you visit Daily Yellow, I advise you look a bit further than just the prompt I came up with and take a look at all the colourful gorgeousness and major inspiration Daily Yellow brings!

The Daily Paper Prompt I came up with is about getting inspired by the rhythm of music. I took photos during my creating process that make a little tutorial. Are you in for that? Come on in then…

DPP #61 – Create to the Rhythm of the music

First, I taped a big piece of blank paper onto cardboard and placed it on my easel.

I then put some paint on my palet. At this point, I did not know what music would be my inspiration, so I choose random colours that spoke to me at that moment.

I decided to work with a palet-knife but you can choose whatever material or tool you like:
brush and paint, pencils, crayons, pens and so on…

Now that my materials were in place, I was ready to go so I turned on the radio.
I had no idea what music would be on. The radio played a song I never heard before
and I just went with it. I started to smear paint on the paper to the rhythm of the song.

This is the image I ended up with… created to the tune with paint and a palet knife.

The fun thing about this way of creating is, that the song does not need to have lyrics.
You can even put on a cd with classical music – or hiphop, or house music… anything goes.

After I’d created this background, I got curious to what the song had been all about… so I looked on the internet and found the playlist of the radio station. The song was Waves by Mr. Probz, a Dutch rapper/artist I did not know. I had not thought he was a rapper, as the song does not sound like ‘rap’ to me – I kinda like it even!

I also found the lyrics of the song here and was surprised when I read those… I had used just the right ‘watery’ colours! Then, I saw an image of a lighthouse and a boat (sail) popping out to me from the background, so I scribbled with a crayon and did some machine stitching to bring those shapes out.

The lighthouse deserved more attention, so I cut out the shape from old dictionary pages, sprayed a bit of ink on it and glued it onto the page. I added a moon (0r is it a sun?) and I journaled part of the lyrics on top of it.

Here’s the final piece.

Now it is your turn. Go grab your materials and turn on the radio…

…but before you do, one last request

I NEED YOUR HELP!!!

If you follow me, then you know I am the founder of FEATURING magazine.

FEATURING released four issues but we notice that still a lot of people haven’t heard of this magazine… and in order to keep this awesome art publication alive and going, we have to spread the word and get more brand awareness so we can reach more customers. The release of the next issue depends on that.

Therefore, we’ve partnered with Thunderclap to promote the magazine and I ask all my friends and fans to help promote the magazine.

Thunderclap is an app that updates the Facebook status, Tumblr or Twitter feed from every person who clicks the link on the FEATURING thunderclap page. Thunderclap allows a single message to be mass-shared, flash mob-style. It only happens once and won’t spam your friends, but the end result is that if we reach the goal of 500 supporters, massive amounts of people are reached and the name of FEATURING magazine will be heard. We have only two weeks left to reach our goal of 500 people that click the link and support FEATURING…

Are you a friend and fan of me and FEATURING? Then please visit the FEATURING Thunderclap page and donate a tweet or Facebook status update to help us promote the magazine.

Thanx!!!!

I don’t like posts with a lot of text myself, but this is one.
There is something I want to explain about my new journal, and I can’t
do that in a few sentences – so if you don’t have the time, you might
consider to come back later. After all, it’s (almost) weekend and most
of you have some extra time – and the subject is important to all of us.

I’ve been thinking about it for a while now… what do I want to show on my blog
(make ‘public’) and what do I want to keep to myself. I know some people share
their deepest thoughts on their blogs, but not me. Since I work with computers
ánd have a computer expert on my side, I know the dangers of the Internet.

You say you know that too, and I believe you. I believe everyone knows it,
but we easily forget. We type in our emotions, we type in our e-mail address,
we have all sorts of accounts (yahoo, flickr, google, facebook) and share our
information in groups that aren’t ‘safe’. Even a ‘private’ group isn’t really
private if it is hosted by a big company like Ning. (That’s why I teach my online
workshops on my own site, with my own server.) You never know what those
big companies do exactly with their databases full of personal information;
YOUR information! We mingle in social networks and in the heat of the
moment share things that we might regret later…

What you put on the Net, will be there forever. For everyone to see.
Friends and enemies, bosses and colleagues, your children, grandchildren
and great-grandchildren and who knowes else…
so I’m careful with what I share.
Very careful.

..

But here’s a dilemma.
A dilemma most scrapbookers, art journalers and artists will recognize,
’cause most of the time, we create from our emotions. If we don’t do that,
the artwork we make would be ‘just a trick’. We want to let those emotions
out, pour it on paper. Get rid of it in our heads and throw it out in the open.
Creating helps us deal with emotions, the good and the bad ones.
Creating can be very therapeutic, most of us have experienced that
some way or another.

Since I started my ‘Chronicles’ last year, I’ve been trying to find a way to share
the personal stuff without being too personal. I became addicted to my weekly
pages, but some weeks weren’t all that nice. I don’t care that you know that I
was sad, or angry – but I don’t want you to know all the details or name names
of people that had to do with it, you know. I did find ways to still put it on the
page, and make it invisible for others. I hid journaling under layers.
I used symbolic pics that have a special meaning to me that no-one else knows
etcetera. But still… some pages remained unmade because it was too private.

In the past Months, I discovered that my journaling became less and less
personal. I became a bit lazy. Instead of seeking for ‘solutions’ to pour my
emotions on a page without anyone seeing it, I just stopped doing that.
And it didn’t feel right.

I am a soul searcher: I think about things a lot, I analyse my inner self,
my dreams, my thoughts my emotions – and since I am creative, I want to do
something creative with that soul searching journey!
And that’s why I altered the book with ‘recipy cards’ (see former post.)

(Yeay, here’s a photo! Finally!)

This will be my ‘honest journal’.
Since I am a ‘writer’ and find the words best in my mother language, this will
be a Dutch journal. The title says: “To be honest…” (The phrase you use when
you don’t want to deny something anymore and are going to tell the truth)

I embossed the paint strokes with clear embossing powder,
the shiny surface makes a nice contrast with the matte cardboard.

Yesterday, I visited Michelle’s blog and * oh coincidence * she talked
about a site she discovered which is called “Soul Journaling.” It sounded
like something that could complement my ideas about my ‘honest’ journal,
so I hopped over to check it out. It’s creator is Sarah Whitmire, and there are
22 prompts for free (followed by advanced technique workshops you can
purchase if you want to.)

Now my new journal is not to be used for ‘prompts’ – it has to be completely
MINE in exact the way I want it to be, but I found some of the prompts
(or ‘pieces’ from it) very inspiring. I was especially inspired by this prompt,
where you ‘armour your soul’ to shield it against outside criticism and your
inner critic. I didn’t follow the exact prompt, but used the ‘armour’ idea.

The background is dictionary paper, with the words I wanted to write about
printed on it (highlighted with a square). I composed my journaling around
those words to emphasize the things I have to shield my inner self against.
(For non-Dutchies, the journaling say things like “I shield myself against
shame” and “I am way to critical of myself”)

And now what is the purpose of this ‘honest art journal’.
Simple. This is my inner search journal. I won’t censor myself in this journal.
I either show the pages in public – if I feel it won’t do anybody harm and when
I have no trouble sharing the emotions – or I keep the page to myself.
So you will see some art pages from this journal, and some you won’t.
This is the main deal I made with myself: no censoring!
This journal has to be about soul searching in the most honest way;
the good, the bad and the ugly.

How do you deal with this topic?
Do you pour your inner self onto the pages?
And when you do, do you hide it under layers?
Do you keep it to yourself?
Do you publish it on your blog for everyone to see?
How do your friends/partner/kids feel about it when you tell about them
and put it on the Internet?

I suppose I gave you something to keep your mind busy this weekend.
Don’t forget – not everything has to be ‘deep’ and ‘meaningful’.
I might just go and throw paint on a page without thinking!
Be a little child again, go with the flow and enjoy the creative process,
the paint, the smell and the colours!

Before I go, here are pics of the goodies I received in the mail last week.
I won them at the “One World One Heart” – event.

From Halle:

A package of beautiful, handmade photo postcards with envelopes.

From Terri:

An “original Terri” postcard and bookmark (and really, her work is even more
breathtaking when you hold it in your hands), printed postcards with prints of
her artwork, sheets of deli paper tied with recycled Sari silk ribbon and a white
poster paint sharpie (extra fine tip).

Thank you, thank you, thank you for staying with me through this long post!
Enjoy your weekend!!!

In my Friday post, I told you about the stamps I bought.
Although I don’t stamp very often, I do like to buy them
and little by little, my amount of stamps grew from ‘a few’ to ‘a lot’.
Among them, there are quite some ‘clear’ and unmounted stamps
and it became time to store them properly. But how?

I asked around and looked for store solutions,
but nothing seemed very fitting to me.
In DVD-boxes?
Those are too small, and I don’t have room to store a whole row of boxes.
Special boxes to store stamps?
They look like DVD-boxes – same problem.

BUT… when I saw some store systems, an idea came to mind.
Using those knowledge, I made my own system,
and it works very well! YEAY!!!

So here it is. My own stamp-store-system…

(You can click on the images to enlarge, for a better view.)

I bought two large binders.

Using cardboard and duct tape, I made ‘folding sides’
An elastic band keeps the binder neatly together.

The bottom and the side are protected by the cardboard sides.
When the clear stamps don’t stick too well and come off,
they will be kept from falling out of the binder.

The side folds over the bottom.
To look at my stamps, I spread out the side…

Then I spread out the bottom… and tadaaa!

… now I can flip through my stamps!
On the left, the stamped images in a plastic pocket.
On the right, the stamps sticking to a thick transparency.

Last Sunday, I went to the scrapbook store in Heesch to shop
and meet Jenneke, Jeanet and Petra! It was such a great day!
We talked, we laughed and we did some major shopping.
I hadn’t met Jeanet before, and it was really cool to finally meet her!
Thanks girls for a wonderful day!!

We only thought about taking a few pictures after Petra was gone
(she left earlier) and I’m sorry I didn’t think about it before…
Next time, you will be in the picture too Petra!

Jeanet, me and Jenneke. Photo taken with Jenneke’s cell phone.

Last week, I took notes of the things that I wanted to memorize on
my ‘chronicles’ page of the week.
Because I knew I was going to shop on Sunday, I didn’t start working
on the page until yesterday, and combined my notes with new goodies.

Week 7

I wrote some very personal and private journaling on the page.
After that, I covered it with gesso and mist. (You can still see
some text shimmering on the right, under the note card.)
I just had to jot it down and now it is there, and I know what it says…
(I will spend a post on this subject soon!)

This is becoming a long post… are you still with me?
Then let me show you the project I’m working on right now.

This is a book I bought a few years ago. It holds blank recipe cards but I
didn’t buy it to take cooking notes… I’m planning something more fun!

(Sorry to all the ladies who like baking and cooking… I’m a lousy cook
and I don’t like cooking either… so yes, I can think of something more fun
to do with a book like this. In fact, EVERYTHING is more fun then recipes!)

First, I have to fill up the hole that is in the cover (it’s in the shape
of a spoon, you can still see it.) It needs yet another layer of gesso!

And this is how the pages look.

I’ve only just begun with altering this book, I will have to cover up
the tab-pages (they show pics of food now) and the recipe card-pages
inside, but I’m not there yet.
I hope to tell ánd show you what this is all about next time.

Enjoy your week and see you on Friday!
