The Department of Waterways and Public Works started building the Delta Works in the year following the Great Flood of 1953. The massive project, with 3 locks, 6 dams and 5 storm surge barriers, was completed in 1997.

Weet het water nog
dat het eens het land innam
waar we nu wonen		 Does the sea recall
that it once flooded the land
that we now live on
