Hi there dear readers, deskers and everybody new.
It’s Wednesday; the day I join the “What’s On My Workdesk Wednesday” tribe over at Stamping ground and post a picture of my desk to show you what I’m up to.
I took the desk-photo this morning but the other photo’s were made last week – remember I promised you I would take you for another walk through town? I did, and made photos along the way to show you another part of this beautiful town where I live.

So if you are here just to see my work desk and don’t feel like ‘walking’ with me, you can skip the picture-overload part of this post and go straight to the comment-field (’cause I love it when you leave me a comment!)

Here is today’s desk photo.

WOYWW #509

And now, let’s go for a walk through town: here’s Middelburg seen from above (photo from www.aerophotostock.com)

I marked the route we walked. The little numbers (can you find them? You might wanna enlarge the photo…) refer to the places I took a photo.

1. Little gate

I live in a back alley of the city centre and when I step out of my front door, I can choose all kinds of directions to start my walk. This time I choose to go through this little gate…. it looks very dark & ‘going nowhere’ so I cropped the photo and brightened it for you… see there’s an alley on the other side of it?

2. Isabellagang

Going through the little gate (or should I say “under path”?) I end up in this little alley “Isabella passage.” I choose not to go right but took a photo to show you what’s there… isn’t this the sweetest little alley?

3. Only a few minutes walk takes me to this little spot.

I don’t even know what it is exactly… a garden? A very little park? A passage from one street to another? I like this quiet little spot surrounded by walls of the the tall historical houses.

4. Stairs

At the end of the little park lies a street, there were you can see the white banister. That street is on another level so at the end you have to climb these stairs. Standing on the stairs, I took a photo of the white house/wall to the right.

5. Poems on the wall

Walking through Middelburg you will find poems everywhere, written (stencilled) on the walls. One can buy a booklet in the bookstore with a little map/route and info about all the poems that can be found in town. My neighbourhood has a few poems on walls too, in Dutch of course – but my Dutch readers may find it nice to read…

6. Lady overlooking the street

I am a member of Middelburg’s Facebook group and someone in the group pointed out this statue that can be found only a few streets away from me. I’d never seen her ’cause I rarely visit that back-street, but I went looking for this statue now and look… I found her!

7. Poseidon

Another house with a poem…

8. Small marina and canals

I just love the canals and the big houses that stand on the quays… I took 3 photos to show you the sight and puzzled them together… and can you see “Tall John” sticking out above the houses.

9. I also walked along the “Bastion” (the ‘star’ in the air view photo, see this post)

… and there’s my favorite building on the horizon: The Eastern Church.

10. This is the “Koepoort” (‘cow-gate’)

and that’s the place I abandon the Bastion to walk back home

11. Poem on the wall

I’m almost home when I come across this poem on another wall… I see/read this one often. The language is kind of ‘older Dutch’ and is about a man and a woman sitting on the dunes. I love especially the last lines. Translating is difficult and doesn’t do justice to the poetic feel of the lines, but it says something like: “When, and where was it* that I was this high and silent with only you?” (* how long ago was it)

I hope you enjoyed this – already fourth – walk with me.

Goodmorning lovely ones!
It’s a sunny morning in the Netherlands, in fact, it has been sunny all week. My beloved and I took advantage of it by going for a long walk last weekend and I took my camera with me to show you another part of Middelburg.

Before I come to that, here’s my ‘workdesk’ photo – my workdesk this week is the little table in the living room ’cause I’m still working on the ‘clothing’ for my son’s birthday (it’s going to be a jacket, he already knows that so I don’t spoil a thing by telling you…) that will get some/a lot of Japanese embroidery (“Sashiko” – see last post.) I ordered special Sashiko needles to work with and I’m in love with the Japanese packaging!

WOYWW #473

Oh, and that brown ‘thingie’ that looks like a piece of chocolate? That’s a leather thimble I made myself to protect my thumb. So I’m sitting in the living room stitching away while watching the World Cup Football on the television.

However, one cannot sit inside all day so my beloved and I go out for walks sometimes. Last Sunday I took my camera with me – you may remember the photos of the ‘tourist trip‘ I made through my little town a couple of weeks ago? A lot of you commented on the star-shaped ‘ring of canals’ around the town that could be seen on the arial photo.

Here’s the photo again and I marked the route my beloved and I walked.

Yep, we walked all around the ‘star’. Before we start our walk at the ‘Bolwerk’ as it is called (Bastion – the star shaped canal was dug to protect the city. More history about the town can be found here) we walk through our neighbourhood to get there.

I talked about the big church “Tall John” that stands a few steps from our appartment in a former post, but on the East side my home is protected by a church that I find even more beautiful than my tall friend… when I step out of the front door I can see it’s roof. See that, right in the middle of the photo? That’s the Oostkerk (Eastern church)

To get to this church, we walk through the Spanjaardstraat, a historical street with beautiful houses and monuments. (The Eastern Church looms already in the distance.)

We take a small detour and walk through the Verwerijstraat to approach the church from the other side.

… and here it is in it’s full glory, my fave building of this town, the Oostkerk. Where tall John behaves as a vain young girl, flaunting her looks, the Eastern church is rooted and stands strong, like a big, broad protector. Is it strange to say that I ‘trust it more’…? (On this internet page someone commented giving some nice, historical info on this church.)

I just find the Eastern church more ‘honest’…. look, there’s a skeleton sculpture above the door that reminds us of human mortality…

… there are more sculptures on it’s walls, showing different figures and shapes.
This one shows all kinds of shells.

I wave ‘my big protector’ goodbye and with a few steps we stand on the star-shaped ‘bastion’ and start our walk along the water.
“Walking the star” takes about an hour and I took several photos along the way.

There’s a mill standing on the bastion (if fact, there’s two windmills on the bastion, this one is called Seismolen.)

I love those little houses on the water, there are several floating in the canal and it’s home to the ducks.

Coming at the end of the bastion we cross the city centre to get home again and yes, there’s “the vain lady, flaunting her looks” Tall John.

The weather today is as nice as on the photos and I’m going to settle with needle and thread in the easy chair on the balcony. I wish you all a day as beautiful as mine!

Edited August 2018: I received a lovely email from ‘Bookmundi’ who got inspired by my ‘tourist blogposts’ to write an awesome guide (CLICK) on the Netherlands, it’s worth a read if you’re planning to visit The Netherlands.

Goodmorning lovelies – I’m back for another ‘desk post’ this Wednesday! However, I will show photos that were taken last week. I thought you would enjoy these because they are made during a professional photoshoot. Anda van Riet is a photographer who’s working on a project about the creative people that live in my apartment building. She wants to picture each person in their favorite, creative environment and she asked me if she could visit my atelier and if I was willing to get photos taken. Well, of course!

This was how my workdesk looked during the photo-shoot and I submit this photo for Wat’s On Your Workdesk, Wednesday (no labels on the photo this time but if you look closely you can spot some Jessica Sporn stencils & stamps, lots of acrylic paint, brayers, my reading glasses and my gelli plate. Oh, and some monoprints in the make…)

WOYWW #371

Yes: mono-printing on a gelli plate always leaves you with a colorful mess… which is perfect for photos!

Next are some pictures Alda took… I was a bit in shock when I saw that double chin on the photos… it’s not even a double, it’s a triple chin – Eeeckkk! But hey – I’m not that young anymore and this is reality… and I assure you, when I don’t look down it’s not that bad as on these photos (gotta keep my head up high, right?!)

Next photo is my favorite! Alda took it while standing in the living room and the glass door that divides the room from my atelier made for a beautiful reflection.

And in case you were wondering… here’s what the blogpost title comes from: Donderdag (Thursday) is the name of the canvas that I created in May.

Today is the last time that Lunch Lady Jan hosts the WOYWW-event: Julia (Stamping Ground) will be back next week as the main host after she had brain surgery and was recovering over the last weeks. Glad that you are doing so well and that you are able to take the reins once more Julia! And thank you so much for taking over while Julia was ‘down and out’ Jan!!!

QDS #7. Photos – used in another way

Some years ago, before I discovered Art Journaling, I was a ‘scrapbooker (see this guest post from 2011 on July Balzer’s blog: From Scrapbooking to Art Journaling.) In scrapbooking you find various styles. There are also new scrapbook lines coming out every season; scrapbooking papers in different designs, various embellishments to go with the paper lines and all kinds of related goodies that respond to the ‘spirit of the time’ because trends are the main stray of hobby-country where big money is made. At that time I wrote articles for a Dutch scrapbooking magazine and therefor I was well informed about the latest styles, brands and trends… but whether the talk of the town was “vintage” or “free style scrapping,” one thing stayed the same: the starting point. The basics of scrapbooking was and still is the use of photos.

Art Journaling is different. In art journaling we use all kinds of shapes and images to express our emotions. The use of (self taken) photos is no longer necessary to tell our story and so we don’t use photos much anymore. Or maybe we don’t use photos because it reminds us of scrapbooking and we want to express that we are ‘beyond that’ and more ‘artsy’??

In today’s post I will show you that there are more possibilities in using photos than “illustrate our story the scrapbooking way.” I found some inspiring examples of artists/art journalers who use photos as a starting point and then do something really special with it. In the examples, no photo remains untouched and yet they still remain recognizable as a photo… take a look:

Draw beyond your photo

The photo in this example is in itself not very special … a bit boring even. The way the drawing goes further where the photo stops, makes the image interesting. (I found the image here)

This example reminds me of one of my drawing lessons in high school. The teacher handed out ‘half heads’ (magazine/advertising pages with a portrait on, cut in half.) We had to glue the pages on drawing paper and draw the other side of the face.

Photographer Michelangelo Di Battista and illustrator Tina Berning are known for doing just that with their “Face project.” The series contains photos that have been extended/finished with painting and drawing techniques.

Photo or illustration?

Nikki Farquharson also used (parts of) photos in an unexpected way. She let her fantasy go loose!

In the examples shown above, you can still see the photo parts but when you look at Nikki’s website/art, you will find illustrations in which it is hard to find the photo that was taken as a starting point.

Extend your photo

One of my favorite artists in the field of extending photos is Stephanie Drömer

Stephanie draws, sews and uses all kind of mixed media materials and techniques to extend photos. She creates a whole new image that way.

Drawing ON your photo

Instead of expanding your photo, you could also use your photo as a background and add something to it, like a small drawing. This funny example is made by Eva Hof

Instead of drawing, writing on your photo is also a possibility. A few years back I started a series ‘Writing on/over Writers’ in which I use portrait photos of famous writers. I journal my opinion about the writer (or his/her books) on the portrait photo. (I should definitely pick up this project again and work on some more portraits soon…)

Part photo, part drawing

A combination of a photo and drawing; now that might perhaps look like this…

This piece is made by Ben Heine and on his website you will find many more similar examples. When you look at the photos closely, you will see that he probably uses the computer to manipulate some things (see the shadow of the drawing paper?) but it’s the idea that counts, isn’t it?!

While doing research for this blogpost, I got inspired by all the possibilities to use photos in my art journals so I took out my box with old photos and played!

Page inspired by the art of Stephanie Drömer

Find a photo with clear sight-lines (a building or landscape often works best.)

Paste the photo on drawing paper (or in your journal) and extend the lines using a pencil and ruler.

Use the pencil lines as a guide to stitch over it with your sewing machine (or, if you don’t have a sewing machine, embroider by hand.) I used black yarn but you can of course use colored yarn instead.

Get rid of the loose wires by sticking them to the back or paste the loose threads onto the page (use glue, gel medium or mod podge) so that they make for additional lines. I did the latter, see next photo.

Fill the open/white spaces as you like. I stamped a grid in two of the planes (to cite the grid of the fencing in the photo.) I draw lines with a fine point marker in some planes and painted a few with acrylic paint.

Don’t fill all the planes. Keep looking at your composition and stop when it’s enough. (When that is? Well, that is always the question and challenge …)

Page inspired by the art of Nikki Farquharson (and also a bit by Michelangelo Di Battista and Tina Berning)

Find a good photo of yourself. It can be a portrait or one that shows you from head to toe. I used this photo of myself to work with (photo taken in 1984, or so.)

Use a part of the photo and draw, write, paste… in short DO something with it.

These are but a few examples of how you can use photos in your art journal or mixed media pieces. Now go on, take a photo and let your imagination run wild.

QDS #7.

From Scrapbooking to Art Journaling.)

Half foto, half illustratie

Deels foto, deels tekening

QDS #3. Playing with Shadows

At the end of the day a few weeks ago, a guy appeared on the wall of my atelier. I’d seen this little man before – he hangs in front of my window you see. There hangs the dream catcher that my (unfortunately deceased) dear blog friend Joe “Spadoman” Spado made for me and I had noticed before that there is a face hidden in the dream catcher. However, the shadow on the white wall made the little guy really come to life.

Shadows… they are all around us. They give you a different view of the normal things and form the most beautiful patterns.

I made this picture a few years back in our previous home – the shadow of the blinds on the wall.

On the next picture, the specks on the wall are caused by the leaves of a bush with the sun playing through (with on the right the shadow of the blinds again.)

Using photo’s of shadows in your journal

The easiest way is to print the photo and glue it onto your art journal page. The “face on the wall” – I baptized him “Joe” – got a place in my Chronicles art journal. I printed the photo, cut out the shadow and stuck it on my weekly page. Here you can see the basics of what had to become the page for week 25.

… and here is the page now that it is finished.
I added a bit more contrast to the shadow by outlining some of the lines with a marker and journaled around the photo.

The Chronicles of Marit 2015 – Week 25

I had not yet enough of playing with shadows so I chose the photo with the leave-specks to create another journal page. I edited the photo digitally in Photoshop so that it became even more abstract than it was. I printed it and pasted the photo into my “Purple Art Journal.”

I use my ‘Purple journal’ especially for ‘found poetry art’ so I went looking for phrases and words that I could use with this image. I finally found this ‘poem:’

I liked the colors of the print so I mixed acrylic paint in similar tones. Then I painted over the print. Not too neatly, I used the original image only as a composition reference to paint an abstract looking image.

I then positioned and glued the sentences of the poem on the page and finished it by drawing a frame around the image – referring to the last sentence.

The next artwork (created on an index card) is an oldie. I created it in June 2013 inspired by a photo that I saw in a magazine of poles in the snow throwing long shadows. (Sorry, I cannot find the original photo anymore.)

More ideas and inspiration with shadows!

The following picture is probably well-known to most of you: a photo of your own shadow. Now you might, for example, paste a picture like this on the first page of a new art journal. It is personal, and yet a little different than a ‘normal photo’ or a selfie… You could also make an art journal page about yourself and illustrate it with a shadow picture. For example: write some things about yourself (description/characterization) in the shadow using a white pen. Or make a page on which you sum up your good qualities (written around your shadow) versus bad qualities (written IN the shadow.)

(foto: pixabay)

You can also stage your image and use the photo of a shadow in a different way. For this, you have to think up in advance of what you want to end up with. (see photos) Create and photograph the shadow that you need. Print your photo and add drawings or collage to it to create the effect you want. (The shown photos are probably edited digitally but you can of course use this idea to make a collage.)

(foto: studentartguide)

Ordinary objects can throw strange shadows. A ring placed on an open book with the light falling on it in a certain angle makes for a heart-shaped shadow on the pages. (I saw many photos of this where a wedding ring was used.)

I found the above photo on the Internet as part of a blogpost that was about ordinary objects making bizarre shadows… it is really worth to click this link and be amazed – it might bring even more ideas and inspiration to work with shadows: 23 Shadows Turned into Something Far More Amazing

Look around you this week and notice not only the things that surround you but also the shadows they make. I can’t wait to see what beautiful images you discover!

QDS #3.

The Chronicles of Marit 2015 – Week 25

Good morning and good Friday you all!

Last week, my book title haiku was in honor of our new King. This week I have again a Dutch
‘event-related’ haiku. May 4 & 5 are “memorial days” in The Netherlands. On May 4th, our country memorizes the victims of war (WW II as well as all other wars) and “V-day” (‘victory in Europe’ or ‘freedom day’) is celebrated on May 5th.

First, here’s my booktitle haiku.

Kort Amerikaans

Het boek der rusteloosheid

De prijs der vrijheid

Short American*

The Book of Restlessness

The Price of Freedom

* "Short American" is a phrase that was used for a certain haircut
that became popular in the fifties - it refers to the type of haircut
that American soldiers/allies had.

This haiku is submitted to Haiku my Heart Friday. Go to Recuerda Mi Corazon to find a link-list of all the other haiku lovers.

In my former post I left you with a cliffhanger, remember?
I promised to show you my latest Chronicles art journal spread and the scary photos I used on those pages.

I did work in my Chronicles journal a bit, but I spend most time yesterday on playing with the gelatin plate that sat in the fridge unused for over a week… so there are all kinds of half-finished pages laying on my desk today. It looks like this.

… and yes, I glued the ‘scary photos’ on the art journal page… and I don’t mean the photo of the new king and queen 😉

I mean these:

See… that’s my son up there on the roof!
EEEEECKKKK! What did I tell ya?
Is that scary or what?!

We discovered a big water-stain on the bedroom ceiling some time ago, and when we stood in the garden and looked at the roof, it seemed as if some tiles on the roof had shoved. We were not sure if that was causing the problem though. My beloved is afraid of heights (acrophobia) and I am not much of a hero either… but my dear son was anxious to get on the roof when he heard of the leak! I know he is not a reckless guy so I let him, but still I felt it in my stomach when he went up there! The neighbours were kind enough to open their roof window so he could climb through there.

“… and is it fixed?” you might ask now. My son did not manage to get the tiles straight but he made pictures with his phone, so we could at least have a look at the problem ourselves and still keep our feet on the ground 😉 We then called a professional contractor who put the tiles straight and that should do it. It has not rained much since then, so we are not sure if it is fixed, but the weather report predict some showers in the next days so keep your fingers crossed please!

More water… in my Zeeuwse Ziel art journal

I dreamed of water and floating through a river the other day and I made the next art journal page inspired by that dream.

There is some collage-ing on this page (the ‘blobs’ are cut out of aerial photos from a swampland.) I also used dylusion spray ink, water-soluble crayons and black and white posca pens.

And that’s it for today. [Sorry, no link love… I’ll make that up to you next week.] This afternoon I intend to ‘dive into Facebook’ to find out why it is that I have a facebook page but don’t see a timeline. Neither can I become ‘friends’ with other people. I guess that all has to do with the fact that I do not have a ‘personal account’ (only a ‘page’ account, which probably is seen as ‘business’…) I hope to figure some things out so I can finally and officially ‘like you’ and become your ‘friend’! Ha!

Well, FRIENDS, may you all have a nice weekend.
Don’t forget mom!
