I got to know Jenny de Bode 2012, when I discovered her ‘stone folks‘ on the Internet. I emailed her because I wanted to write an article for Featuring magazine about her art and right away it felt we’d always been friends. Jenny and I, we ‘click.’ Ever since that day we email each other, we write each other, we call each other, we inspire each other, we collaborate on projects together and we gave workshops together. We don’t visit each other as much as we might want to (she lives in another part of the Netherlands) but we are in each other’s hearts.

WHO IS JENNY?
Jenny de Bode is a teacher of English and Dutch and loves to encourage creativity in people. She developed courses and workshops in guided fantasy, creative writing, storytelling and language play. She teaches art journaling and creative writing (and loves to combine texts and images). She translated children’s books, writes poetry and short stories, draws on stones and paints on paper and makes big big messes. She’s convinced that creating makes us happy. Jenny wrote a book in Dutch about the magic of art journaling: Art Journaling, de magie van tekenen, schrijven en plakken in een creatief journaal and was co-writer (together with Lia Nijman) of books about how to develop your creativity: Creativiteit, géén kunst and how to stimulate creative thinking in children: Hoe bedenk je het ?!

QDS #2. A Summer of Snippety Susies

Some creative work just happens. Three scraps of paper that I thoughtlessly put down on some brown paper suddenly showed their hidden potential! Only a few extra lines were needed to transform them into three funny figures. When Marit invited me as a guest blogger for her Quirky Summer project I remembered the sheer joy of working with coincidental odd scraps of paper.. Would you like to try?

What you will need
An interesting page from a magazine that preferably shows some skin or skin-like colour, some Kraftpaper or grey wrapping paper (black or plain coloured paper can also be used) black and white fine liners or gelly rollers and glue

Step 1: Just randomly rip
First rip some random forms from your magazine page and lay them out on a piece of brown paper

Step 2: Look for a face
First see if there’s a piece of ‘skin’ that can be used for a face. Now look among your torn pieces for useful forms for a body or legs. Resist the urge to grab a pair of scissors and cut out a skirt, a bra or a little coat. It’s the irregular forms that you have ripped from the page that will stimulate your fantasy!

Step 3: Puzzle
Use only what’s available but feel free to turn your torn pieces upside down to see if the other side is more interesting.
Puzzle with the pieces until your fantasy takes over and tells you what it’s going to be. Take only what you can use and leave the rest.(watch out: don’t throw anything away yet. Cherish your leftovers, they may be useful later on.)

Step 4: Draw and Decorate
Feel free to draw parts that aren’t there to complete your image. (I added the hands!) An arm, a pair of shoes, part of a leg…hair. It is the combination of collage and your drawn parts that will make it special! Then take your fineliners and decorate as much as you like, add buttons, shoestrings, frills…whatever.

Step 5: Add text
You’ll probably end up with some quite hilarious figures and a funny text may add to that.

Step 6: Make a border
Lay the finished figure on a blank page of your art journal. Have you still enough snippets to make an irregularly ripped border around it? (If not grab a suitable new page.) There are various ways to make a border. See what appeals to you most and secure it with glue. Leave room to surround the border with text!

Step 7: Add handwriting
Now write around it! Use your sloppiest handwriting and write big! Your scrawly text will act as an extra border and the sloppier it looks the better! (It may be quirky, remember!) What to write? Just anything that comes to mind…I for example wrote “It’s so nice to fiddle about with scraps of paper and just see what wants to be created with them…”

And then what?

Leftover scraps
So many pieces that I did not use. Oh…I had loads on my work top. Have you?
Watch them closely, you now know what these scraps may lead to…. Among mine there was a snippet showing two toes and the nails looked so much like eyes that I could not resist….I drew eyelids on them and made them into a little face.

Fat lady
I arranged some of the left over scraps on a fresh piece of Kraft paper. There was a fat behind and two pieces that could be used as legs. And there she was, my fat little lady.

Sensible Shoes
And all that was left to be done was drawing a hand, a handbag (yes, here I took another scrap) and nice sensible shoes.

Buttons and frills
Decorating her was the last thing to do: some buttons, curly hair and some fashionable frills at her ankles. When I looked her in the eyes, the text came almost all by itself…. “She was always a bit ashamed of her bottom…”

BEWARE: You’ll make what you are!
I glued her in my journal and made a border out of another coloured page. I surprised myself by writing: “And of course this is all about projection! It’s MY OWN bottom that I’m ashamed of that makes me write this!” So now you know…

HAVE A rippin’ good summer… CREATE! HAVE FUN !

Ik leerde Jenny de Bode kennen in 2012, toen ik online ergens haar ‘gezichten in steen‘ ontdekte en haar aanschreef omdat ik voor Featuring magazine een artikel over haar werk wilde schrijven. Jenny en ik, dat klikte meteen! Sindsdien emailen we, schrijven we, bellen we, inspireren we elkaar, werken we aan gezamenlijke projecten en we gaven ook al workshops samen. We bezoeken elkaar veel te weinig (we wonen niet bij elkaar om de hoek) maar we wonen al jaren in elkaars hart…

WIE IS JENNY?
Jenny de Bode is lerares Engels en Nederlands en houdt ervan om creativiteit in mensen te stimuleren en te bevorderen. Ze ontwikkelt en geeft cursussen en workshops o.a. op het gebied van art journaling (= werken met een creatief dagboek), creativiteitsontwikkeling, creatief schrijven, creatieve denktechnieken, taalspel, geleide fantasie, verhalen vertellen en voorleestechnieken. Verder vertaalt Jenny kinderboeken, schrijft poëzie en korte verhalen, tekent op stenen, schildert op papier en maakt er een grote blije rommel van. Jenny is ervan overtuigd dat creëren ons gelukkig maakt. QDS #2. Een zomer vol scheurmadammekes

Soms komt iets vanzelf op je weg. Drie strips gescheurd papier die ik gedachteloos naast elkaar had gelegd op een grauwpapieren ondergrond lieten opeens verborgen mogelijkheden zien! Er waren maar een paar lijntjes nodig om ze te veranderen in deze drie grappige figuren. Toen Marit mij vroeg als gastblogger voor haar Quirky Dutch Summer moest ik meteen terugdenken aan het pure plezier van werken met toevallige vormen en daar dan je ding mee doen. Wil je ’t ook proberen?

Wat heb je nodig
Een kleurige pagina uit een tijdschrift waarop liefst ook een stukje huid of iets huidkleurigs te zien is, een stuk kraftpapier of bruin inpakpapier (zwart papier of een effen kleur kan ook), zwarte en witte fineliners of gelpennen en lijm.

Stap 1: Willekeurig scheuren
Neem je tijdschriftpagina en scheur daar wat willekeurige vormen uit en leg die op een ondergrond (ik gebruik daarvoor graag grauw-bruin kraftpapier.)

Step 2: Vind een gezichtje
Kijk of er ergens een gezichtje getekend kan worden (liefst op een stukje huid) en kijk of de scheurvormen als lijfjes of andere lichaamsdelen gebruikt kunnen worden. Weersta vooral de neiging om de schaar te pakken en een broekje, behaatje of colbertje te knippen. Juist onregelmatige scheurvormen prikkelen de fantasie!

Step 3: Puzzel
Maak er een sport van om alleen te gebruiken wat er op je tafel ligt. Je hoeft niet alles te gebruiken, juist niet! Draai gerust je scheurstukjes om. Soms is de achterkant beter bruikbaar. (en let op: gooi nog niks weg! Koester je restjes, ze kunnen straks nog van pas komen!) Puzzel tot je fantasie het overneemt en je een idee krijgt van wat het zou kunnen worden.

Step 4: Teken en versier
Teken er gerust wat ontbrekende delen bij om het kompleet te maken, een stukje arm, een paar schoenen, haren… Het is juist de combinatie van collage en tekenwerk die het zo leuk maakt! Versier dan naar hartenlust en gebruik alleen zwarte en witte fineliners. Voeg knopen, veters, randjes en kantjes toe, wat je maar invalt.

Step 5: Voeg tekst toe
Het worden meestal tamelijk hilarische figuren en een tekstje erbij kan dat nadrukkelijk laten uitkomen.

Step 6: Creëer een rand
Leg je uitgewerkte scheurfiguurtje op een blanco pagina in je art journal en kijk of je nog genoeg snippers hebt om een liefst gescheurde rand om het ondergrondpapier te maken. (Zo niet, pak een nieuwe bijkleurende pagina) Een scheurrand kun je op verschillende manieren maken; kijk wat je aanspreekt en plak het vast. Laat genoeg ruimte om er tekst omheen te schrijven!

Step 7: Handgeschreven tekst
Schrijf er nu omheen. Schrijf met je slordigste hanepoten en schrijf groot! Je tekst wordt een extra rand om je werkstuk en hoe hanepoteriger hoe beter. (Het mag ‘quirky’ zijn, weet je wel…) En WAT je dan moet schrijven? Alles wat er maar bij je op komt. Het hoeft niks literairs te zijn. Ik schreef: bijvoorbeeld “Het is zo leuk om maar wat aan te rommelen met scheursels en gewoon te kijken wat er gemaakt wil worden…”

En nu…?

Overgebleven scheursels
Ongebruikte scheursels… er lagen er flink wat op mijn werktafel. Bij jou ook? Kijk eens goed… je weet nu waar die snippers toe kunnen leiden… Op een van mijn stukjes stonden twee tenen met keurig gelakte nageltjes. Ze zagen er uit als oogjes en ik kon het niet laten…dus ik tekende die oogjes op de nagels en maakte er een gezichtje omheen.

Dikke dame
Ik arrangeerde wat van de restsnippers op een vers ondergrondje van bruin papier en daar was ze, mijn dikke dametje.

Stevige schoenen
Al wat ik nog had te doen was een handje tekenen, een handtasje maken (ja, daarvoor moest ik nog even een nieuw stukje scheuren) en een paar stevige schoenen.

Knoopjes en krulletjes
Het versieren was het laatste (knopen, krulletjes, modieus kantje aan de broekspijpen) en de tekst “Ze schaamde zich altijd een beetje voor haar achterste…” kwam vanzelf bij me op toen ik haar in de ogen keek.

LET OP: Je maakt wat je bent…
Ik plakte haar in mijn journaal en maakte een rand van een bijkleurende andere pagina. En toen ik er bij schreef verraste ik mezelf met de tekst “Natuurlijk is dit projectie! Het is de schaamte voor mijn eigen achterste dat me dit laat schrijven!” (En dat weten jullie nu dus ook!)

PREPARE… for it will be a QUIRKY DUTCH SUMMER again!

It’s here again: the Quirky Dutch Summer blog series! You may recall the inspiring Summer series blogposts that I posted in 2012? During that Summer, I published a special inspirational post every week. Posts filled with inspiration and short tutorials, so that you could keep the creativity flowing during the Summer months. Now the series is back, and how!!! I brought in extra creative troops to help me write the Quirky posts so this Summer you will be served with even more inspiration!

Quirky blogposts
Starting on June 15, there will appear a special post on my blog and this series goes on until half of August. Ten weeks, ten posts that are like the Dutch Summer itself: quirky! You know how Dutch summers are: one day it is hot and the next day the wind blows. One day you go to the beach, the next day the weather is perfect for a city trip or you feel for a visit at the museum. The Quirky series is just as erratic. There is no build-up line in the posts. There will be only one general theme: inspiration! The posts can focus on a certain technique, handle a certain topic but you will also find fully elaborated tutorials! You can basically just see the series as a free – 10 week – ‘summer art school’.

There will be a link list at the end of each post. If you create something inspired by a certain post, you can leave your name in the list and link us to your work. You can also share your work in the special Quirky Facebook group.

HOUD JE VAST… want het wordt opnieuw een QUIRKY DUTCH SUMMER!

Hij is er weer: de Quirky Dutch Summer blogserie! Misschien herinneren jullie de inspirerende zomerserie blogposts nog? Elke week een blogpost vol inspiratie en korte tutorials zodat je ook in de zomermaanden de creatieve stroom op gang kon houden. De Quirky Dutch Summer serie verscheen in 2012 op mijn blog. Nu is de serie terug, en hoe!!! Ik heb namelijk wat extra hulptroepen weten te mobiliseren om jullie nóg meer inspiratie te kunnen voorschotelen. Lees vooral verder….

Grillige blogposts
Vanaf 15 juni zal er gedurende tien weken elke maandag een inspirerende post op mijn blog verschijnen. De posts zullen zijn zoals de Nederlandse zomers: grillig! De ene dag is het warm de volgende dag zakt de temperatuur. De ene dag zit je op het strand, de andere dag bezoek je liever een stadje of museum… De ‘Quirky’ serie is al net zo grillig. Er zit geen lijn in de posts – er is maar één overkoepelend thema: creativiteit! De post kan dus in het teken staan van een thema. Of en korte uitleg van een bepaalde techniek bevatten. Maar je zult ook volledig uitgewerkte tutorials vinden! Je kunt de serie eigenlijk gewoon zien als een gratis – 10 weken durende – ‘zomercursus’.

Meespelen
Onder iedere blogpost komt een ‘link-lijst’ te staan. Mocht je aan de slag gaan met (één van de) inspiratie-posts, dan kun je dat laten weten door je naam aan de link-lijst toe te voegen en ons zo doorlinken naar je werk maar je kunt je werk ook delen in de ‘Quirky Facebook groep’.

Het mooie is: die inspirerende ‘Quirky posts’ ga ik niet alleen schrijven! #10 Quirky – Dutch – Summer /

Autumn is almost in the air… I can sense it already. There’s not that typical Autumn smell in the air yet, but it won’t be long now. Summer is winding downs, people return from their holidays and children get back to school – it’s time to close these season-posting-series! We’re at #10 so this is the last post in the ‘Quirky Dutch Summer 2012’ series. There will be one extra ‘Quirky post’ next week – sort of an ‘appendix’ – in which I will show all the mail art that I received from, and send to, participants who played with QDS #2 but after that I will resume my ‘regular Tuesday blogging’ on August 28.

Herfst staat voor de deur… het nieuwe seizoen hangt al een beetje in de lucht. Van die typische herfstgeur is nog niets te bespeuren, maar dat zal nu niet lang meer duren. Zomer loopt echt op z’n eind – mensen komen terug van vakantie, kinderen in het zuiden van Nederland gaan alweer naar school – en het is tijd om ook de Quirky Dutch Summer 2012 serie te beeindigen. We zijn dan ook bij post #10 aangekomen. Volgende week zal er nog één extra ‘Quirky post’ volgen, als een soort aanhangsel, waarin ik alle mail art laat zien die ik naar aanleiding van QDS #2 ontving én verzond, en daarna zal ik mijn normale ‘dinsdag blogging’ hervatten.

Sooo… what’s this last Quirky post about?
Well – it’s quite simple. Be inspired one more time by Quirky Dutch Summer
– and I mean it to the letter this time! Take the word quirky, or Dutch, or Summer – or combine them – do whatever you like with it but use the word(s) as your jumpstart to create something.

Maar goed… we hebben nog één Quirky post te gaan dus wat staat er vandaag op het programma? Nou simpel: laat je inspireren door Quirky Dutch Summer – en dat bedoel ik deze keer letterlijk! Neem één van de woorden (of gecombineerd) als uitgangspunt voor je werk. Laat je inspireren door het woord Grillig/wispelturig, of Hollands of Zomer. Je kunt er alle kanten mee uit!

A Creative Art Journey (27.50 Euro)

September 18 – October 26; 2012

If you love art journaling and are eager to learn some art history along the way, this is the workshop for you! In 12 lessons you will be introduced to 12 different art periods in time. Each lesson concentrates on a specific art period, handling the characteristics and showing the artists and highlights. Every lesson comes with multiple prompts – inspired by the specific period/art – from which you can choose which one suites you best.

Quirky Dutch Summer #8 Guest: Bethany Kartchner

I was only blogging for a few months when in 2009 I bumped into Bethany Kartchner and her artwork at the online SIS community. At that time, both Bethany and I concentrated mainly on scrapbooking. After SIS retired (btw, I still miss the SIS community!) we lost sight of each other for a while. I concentrated on art journaling but every now and then I visited Bethany’s blog and noticed that she too was exploring all different kinds of creativity. She developed from ‘scrapbooker’ into a versatile ‘ mixed media artist ‘ and her blog is definitely worth a visit!

One of the techniques that Bethany is very good at (and that I know nothing about) is ‘plaster’ and all kind of techniques known as ‘ Encaustic ‘ (working with texture, beeswax etc.) I am very happy that she wants to share her knowledge and even made a tutorial video about working with Joint Compound. I hope that the ones of you that never worked with thicker stuff than paper, paint and glue take this challenge to dip your toes in techniques with plaster. The floor is all yours now, Bethany!

Ik was nog niet zo lang aan het bloggen toen ik in 2009, via het online scrapforum SIS, kennis maakte met Bethany Kartchner en haar werk. In die tijd waren zowel Bethany als ik voornamelijk bezig met scrapbooking. Na opheffing van SIS (een community die ik nog steeds mis!) verloren we elkaar een beetje uit het oog en bewandelden we andere wegen, maar zo nu en dan bezocht ik haar blog en zag dat ook Bethany haar creativiteit uitbreide en andere manieren van creëren onderzocht. Ze heeft zich de afgelopen jaren ontwikkeld tot een veelzijdige ‘mixed media artist’ en haar blog is zeker een bezoekje waard!

Eén van de technieken waar Bethany goed in is (en waar ik zelf niets van weet) is ‘plaster’ en technieken die bekend staan als ‘Encaustic’ (zoals werken in bijenwas.) Ik ben heel blij dat ze in deze post een tip van de sluier oplicht zodat wij ook allemaal eens aan de slag kunnen met dikker materiaal dan verf en lijm… ik geef dan ook graag het woord aan Bethany!

Bethany Kartchner is a highly
published professional mixed-media
artist and mother of six. Not only
has her work appeared in numerous
art magazines, but she has also been
on exhibit at the Buell Children’s
Museum in Pueblo, Colorado.

She is a proud member of the
Laveen Art League and frequently
exhibits in their gallery. Bethany
enjoys working with many medias
including fabric, paper and paperclay.

Lately, her focus has changed from
that of a die-hard scrapbooker,
creating layouts to be placed in an
album, to a mixed-media artist.
This is a very exciting transition.

Yet, whatever media she chooses, her style can be defined as whimsical
freestyle. The majority (if not all) of her work is cheerful and fun with
bright colors and happy themes.

Bethany Kartchner is een professionele mixed-media kunstenaar en moeder
van zes kinderen. Niet alleen verscheen haar werk in talloze kunsttijdschriften,
haar werk werd ook geëxposeerd in het Buell Children’s Museum in Pueblo
(Colorado).

Ze is een trots lid van de Art Laveen League en haar werk is vaak te zien tijdens
exposities in hun galerie. Bethany werkt met diverse media, waaronder textiel,
papier en paperclay.

De afgelopen tijd is haar focus veranderd. Van een ‘die-hard’ scrapbooker –
ze maakte traditionele lay-outs die in een album bewaard werden – veranderde
Bethany in de mixed-media kunstenaar die ze heden ten dage is. Zelf noemt ze
deze ontwikkeling een ‘spannende overgang.’

Echter, met welk materiaal Bethany ook aan de slag gaat, haar stijl kan altijd
worden gedefinieerd als grillig en vrij. De meeste (zo niet alle) van haar werken
zijn speels en levendig met heldere kleuren en vrolijke thema’s.

#8 Playing with Acrylic and Joint Compound /

This summer, I’ve been experimenting with a variety of interesting materials including encaustic, watercolors and oil-based paint sticks. However, my new favorite material is joint compound. Judy Wise and Stephanie Lee’s Plaster Studio inspired me to try this amazingly versatile product and I’m hooked. Joint compound is very inexpensive, readily available in a home improvement store and accepts paints beautifully. When wet, you can add texture by drawing into it or by stamping into it with food container lids. When dry, you can sand it, scratch into it and paint it. It can be applied with a trowel, palette knife, or a stencil. Because of its thickness, it can even be molded! What’s not to love?

Deze zomer heb ik geëxperimenteerd met een verscheidenheid aan interessante materialen met inbegrip van bijenwas, aquarelverf en olieverf. Nochtans, is mijn nieuwe favoriete materiaal joint compound. Judy Wise en Stephanie Lee’s Plaster Studio inspireerden mij om dit ongelooflijk veelzijdig product uit te proberen en nu ben ik verslaafd aan het spul! Het is heel goedkoop, verkrijgbaar in elke doe-het-zelf zaak en het neemt prachtig verf op. Als het nog nat is kun je er heel gemakkelijk textuur in maken door in de substantie te tekenen of er bijvoorbeeld doppen of dekseltjes van blikjes in te stempelen. Als het droog is kun je het schuren, er in krassen of met verf bewerken. Je kunt het verwerken met een troffel, een paletmet of een stencil gebruiken om vormen aan te brengen. Vanwege zijn dikte kun je het zelfs gieten, kortom – het heeft alles om van te houden!

Het project dat ik vandaag laat zien heeft een eenvoudig ontwerp en is vooral bedoeld om jullie creativiteit te stimuleren. Ik hoop dat jullie vingers gaan jeuken om ook met dit materiaal aan de slag te gaan!

Materials:

Joint Compound
Trowel
Background paper
Acrylic paints (I used DecoArt Americana brand.)
Baby wipes
Acrylic glazing medium (optional)
Stylus
Acrylic spray sealer
Sharpie (black)

Materialen:

Joint compound (muurvuller ~ M.B.)
Troffel (paletmes of oude creditkaart werkt ook ~ M.B.)
Achtergrond papier
Acrylverf (ik gebruikte het merk DecoArt Americana)
Baby doekjes
Acryl beglazing middellange (optioneel)
Schrijfstift (bv embossing pen ~ M.B.)
acryl spray sealer (iets om je werk te ‘vernissen’ bv gel medium of mod podge ~ M.B.)
Sharpie (of andere permanent marker ~ M.B) – zwart

Technique / Techniek

Apply joint compound to the background paper using a trowel.
If you’d like to smooth it out, remove excess joint compound
from the trowel and lightly wet the trowel.
Allow to dry about 24 hours.
Decide on a focal point. Apply acrylic paint circles randomly.
The circles should be smaller near the focal point and get larger
as you leave the focal area. Dry completely.
Using a stylus, scratch into the surface. This is hard. Work randomly.
Add color to the grooves either by adding paint and wiping away
excess OR by using a black Sharpie marker.
Seal the piece with a glossy sealer.

Breng de muurvuller met een troffel aan op de achtergrond.
Als je het oppervlak gladder wilt hebben, verwijder dan het
overtollige materiaal van je troffel en maak deze nat.
Laat je werk ongeveer 24 uur drogen. LET OP: maak je gereedschap niet onder de kraan schoon, muurvuller kan de leidingen verstoppen! Veeg je gereedschap liever af met papier/oude doek.
Beslis waar het centrale punt van jouw werk moet komen te liggen.
Breng vervolgens met acrylverf cirkels aan die kleiner worden
naarmate ze in de buurt van het ‘focus punt’ van je werk komen.
Laat je werk daarna goed drogen.
Maak met behulp van een embossing pen of schrijfstift krassen
in het oppervlak. Dit gaat nog niet zo makkelijk.
Werk hierbij willekeurig.
Voeg kleur toe aan de groeven door ze met verf te bewerken en
de overtollige verf weer weg te vegen. Je kunt ook met een marker
de groeven benadrukken.
Werk het totaal eventueel af door het (glanzend) te vernissen met
een ‘sealer’ (je zou hiervoor bijv. gel medium of mod podge voor
kunnen gebruiken ~ M.B.)

… Well, thank YOU Bethany, for introducing me and my blogreaders to this technique! We don’t know the name ‘joint compound’ here so I tried working with a similar material myself last weekend to find out which stuff to buy in the Netherlands – … (that’s why the Dutch translation show extra comments, made by me M.B.) It gave indeed the same results and I love it!

Omdat ik geen idee had wat bedoeld werd ‘joint compound’, heb ik voor jullie afgelopen weekend even een klein onderzoekje gedaan. Ik kwam tot de conclusie dat dit materiaal in Amerika gebruikt wordt om scheuren in muren te repareren en toen was de conclusie snel getrokken: het is muurvuller! Laat ik nu ook nog een tube van dat spul in huis hebben… zo kon ik het mooi meteen testen! Hier het resultaat van mijn werk en bevindingen.

Thick scratches on the left were made with an embossing tool while the joint compound was still wet, the thin lines/scratches (on the right) were made with a bookbinding awl, which has a sharp point like a needle. Grooves are coloured with black paint (see tutorial Bethany)

De dikke krassen links zijn gemaakt met een embossing pen in de nog natte laag muurvuller. De dunnere lijnen rechts zijn in de droge laag gekrast met een prikpen. De krassen zijn opgevuld met zwarte verf op de manier zoals Bethany in haar tutorial uitlegd.

Hope you have as much fun with this (new to me) technique as I had!

#5 Mosaic / Mozaïek

I sometimes get the question “Inspiration: where do you find it?”
Well, everywhere and nowhere actually … for example: this …

A few years ago, I came across the following photos while flipping
through a magazine.

Nou, overal en nergens eigenlijk… neem nou dit…

Een aantal jaren geleden kwam ik, tijdens het doorbladeren van een tijdschrift,
de volgende foto’s tegen.

I recognized the style and the hand of the artist/architect immediately
(art history lessons from my art study are not forgotten!)

Friedensreich Hundertwasser

Hundertwasser: an interesting person, but that is not the point here –
my eyes were drawn to the frames around the windows and the
decoration on the façade … mosaic!

Hundertwasser’s decorations inspired me to make this border on
the following work:

(de kunstgeschiedenis lessen zijn niet vergeten!)

Een interessante persoon, die Hundertwasser, maar daar gaat het mij
nu even niet om – ik werd gegrepen door de omlijstingen van de ramen
en die grillige versiering op de gevel… mozaïek!

Hundertwasser’s randje inspireerde mij tot de omlijsting op de volgende werk:

Since then I return to mosaic techniques every now and then.
The border above was drawn and colored with felt-tip pens and markers,
but there are a lot of materials you can use to make mosaics, like paper,
glass or ceramics. Today on my blog I show you a number of examples that
can serve as inspiration.

Sindsdien grijp ik zo nu en dan terug naar mozaïek technieken.
Bovenstaande border is getekend en ingekleurd met viltstiften en markers,
maar er is ook met papier of andere materialen (glas, steen) veel mogelijk
op het gebied van mozaïeken! Vandaag op mijn blog een aantal voorbeelden
die als inspiratie kunnen dienen.

To start with: here’s a simple mosaic border (made from small tiles)

Dit voorbeeld van een ‘golf – rand’ vond ik op deze website/online winkel

Another inspiring idea: collect pebbles (or small stones, or shells, or leaves,
or flowers, or…) to create a border. Imagine what you can do when you take
photos of it, cut strips of the photos and use that on an art journal page…

Nog een inspirerend idee: verzamel kiezels in allerlei kleuren (of kleine
steentjes, takjes, bladeren, schelpen, bloemen etc) en ‘mozaïek’ daar een
rand mee. Bedenk eens wat je daar allemaal mee zou kunnen doen: foto’s
maken, daar weer stukjes uit knippen en gebruiken op een art journal
pagina bijvoorbeeld.

Mosaics are far from modern: even the Greeks and Romans knew how to
use mosaic techniques. The heyday of mosaic decorations can be found,
in the Byzantium (early Christian time, approximately 500-1000 AD)

Mozaïeken zijn niet nieuw: de Grieken en Romeinen wisten al mozaïek
technieken te gebruiken. De hoogtijdagen van mozaïek versieringen
vinden we in Het Byzantium (Vroeg Christelijke tijd, ongeveer
500 – 1000 na Chr.)

Enough talk about mosaics… let’s just watch what you can do with this
technique. I collected some examples, both from my own work as of
art from others.

Genoeg gepraat over mozaïeken nu… laten we maar gewoon gaan kijken
wat je ermee kunt doen. Hieronder een aantal voorbeelden, zowel uit mijn
eigen werk als van anderen.

‘Silence’

This is a large photo, cut into squares which are glued on an art journal page.
When you use this technique, remember to number the cut out pieces on the
back. If you don’t number the pieces, there is a chance you might loose quite
some a lot of time puzzling the pieces back together.
(I’m talking from experience here 😉 )

Een grote foto, in vierkanten gesneden en weer opgeplakt. Wanneer je deze
techniek gaat gebruiken, denk er dan aan om de uitgesneden stukjes aan de
achterkant te nummeren. Doe je dat niet, dan loop je kans ~~wat~~ een heleboel
tijd te verliezen met puzzelen om de foto weer in elkaar te zetten
(en ik kan het weten 😉 )

‘Pixel portrait’

15 x 15 cm – 6 x 6 inch

I edited a photo in Photoshop (filter: pixelate – mosaic) and printed it as an
example – it looked a bit like a cross stitch pattern. I divided the blank page
into small squares (0.12 x 0.12 inch) and used Caran d’Ache watersoluble
crayons and a small brush to paint the squares one by one, using the printed
example as a reference for the colours.

Ik bewerkte een portret foto in photoshop (met het filter: ‘pixel – mozaïek)
en printte het als voorbeeld uit. Het leek wel een beetje op een kruissteek-
patroon. Ik verdeelde de pagina in kleine hokjes (3 x 3 mm) en gebruikte
Caran d’Ache watersoluble krijtjes en een klein kwastje om de hokjes in te
kleuren (‘watersoluble’ krijt mengt met water, waardoor je er mee kunt
aquarelleren), daarbij de kleuren van het voorbeeld min of meer volgend.

‘Fragments’

I cut various photos from a portrait series into pieces.
With these fragments I created a mosaic, supplemented
with cut out pieces of (dessin) paper.

Diverse foto’s uit een portretserie in stukken geknipt.
De fragmenten zijn als mozaïek verwerkt, aangevuld
met uitgeknipte stukken (dessin) papier.

There are so many possibilities to use these techniques,
so many ways to make a mosaic… I’m curious to see

Zo zou ik nog wel even door kunnen gaan met voorbeelden
tonen, maar bovenstaand is wel genoeg om jullie fantasie

Today I present you a guest post from Bianca Kalksma.
Bianca joined my top 2000 blog party last year and I follow her blog ever
since. She’d just started art journaling (thanks to me and my workshop 🙂 )
but she’s a pro when it comes to card making and all kinds of
stamping techniques. I’m very happy that she’s willing to share some of
those ‘secrets’ on this blog today! I’ll leave it up to Bianca now…

Vandaag heb ik Bianca Kalksma op bezoek! Vanaf het moment dat Bianca
enthousiast begon mee te spelen in mijn ‘top 2000 blogparty’ vorig jaar
volg ik haar blog. Ze is nog niet zo lang geleden begonnen met art journaling
(mede dankzij mijn workshop 🙂 ) maar ze is een pro als het gaat om kaarten
maken en allerlei stempeltechnieken. Ik ben heel blij dat Bianca bereid is

Bianca Kalksma

I started making cards with paper and
photos in 2004 but once I discovered
stamps and ink there was no holding me
back… from that moment on I only make
cards with stamping techniques. Last year
I started to experiment with art journals
and using different materials. I find it fun
to vary the techniques and alternate
between making cards and art journals.
I also teach workshops which gives me great
pleasure.

Since 2009 I offer a monthly challenge on my blog. In those challenge post
I also show my readers all kinds of possibilities and techniques on what they
can do with stamps, ink and paper. I have taken my hobby to different levels
and it is not only fun to have this hobby for myself, it is even more fun to have
contact with other blggers and share it!

In 2004 ben ik kaarten gaan maken met papier en foto’s , maar toen ik
eenmaal kennis maakte met stempels en inkt was er geen houden meer
aan. Nu maak ik eigenlijk alleen nog maar kaarten met stempels. Sinds
een klein jaar ben ik wat meer aan het experimenteren met art journals en verschillende materialen. Ik vind het leuk om de verschillende technieken
af te wisselen en dan weer een kaart en dan weer een art journal te maken.
In de afgelopen jaren ben ik ook workshops gaan geven, en dat doe ik met
erg veel plezier.

Sinds 2009 bied ik op mijn blog een maandelijkse challenge aan. Daarbij
laat ik ook zien wat er zoal mogelijk is met stempels, inkt en papier.
Ik ben dus op verschillende manieren bezig met mijn hobby en niet
alleen vind ik het heerlijk om er zelf mee bezig te zijn, ook het contact met
andere bloggers is geweldig.Dat maakt de hobby nóg leuker: het samen delen.

#4 Techniques with Distress Ink /

Technieken met Distress inkt

Marit asked me as a guest to write a blog post for Quirky Dutch Summer.
Of course I was very honored and I immediately said yes. The idea soon
emerged that it had to be about techniques using distress ink.

Marit heeft mij gevraagd om een blogbericht te verzorgen voor de Quirky
Dutch Summer. Natuurlijk was ik zeer vereerd en heb ik meteen ja gezegd.
Het idee was al gauw ontstaan, iets met distress-inkt.

In the first post of this series, Marit showed what you can do to fill the
blank page. My goal is to use different techniques with distress ink – as
much as possible – on one sheet of paper. This way you get a nice overview
of all the possibilities with distress ink and you end up with a nice ‘reference
page.’

Marit liet in blogbericht 1 van deze serie zien wat je allemaal kunt doen
om het witte vel papier dat je voor je hebt liggen doelgericht of juist niet
doelgericht, te vullen. Mijn doel is om op één vel papier zoveel mogelijk
distress inkt technieken te gebruiken. Op deze manier krijg je een mooi
overzicht van wat er zoal mogelijk is met distress-inkt en heb je een leuk
en mooi naslagwerk.

Most of us own at least 2 colours of distress ink. Maybe you bought it because
a friend persuaded you with her enthusiasm about the stuff, but you haven’t
used it as much as you planned. Or maybe you are a real fan and have a big
collection that goes over 40 colours … Never mind how little or how much
you own, I am going to show you what you can do with distress ink.

Bijna iedereen heeft wel 2 kleuren distress-inkt. Een keer overgehaald door enthousiaste verhalen en toen 2 kleurtjes gekocht maar er misschien toch niet
zoveel mee gedaan dan je van plan was. Of misschien ben je wel een echte fan
en heb je inmiddels al een verzameling van richting de 40 kleurtjes …
Ik wil jullie laten zien wat er zoal mogelijk is met distress inkt.

I used the colours: salty ocean and mowed lawn. In addition, I will use sponges/inktapplicators, masking tape, mini mister, waterpen, acrylic block,
clear embossingpoeder, gesso, glimmer mist, brayer (hand roller) and a
template. The stamps are a series of flowers from Crafty Individuals.

Ik gebruik de kleuren: salty ocean en mowed lawn. Daarnaast zal ik gebruik
maken van sponsjes/inktapplicators, maskertape, minimister, waterpen,
acrylblok, clear embossingpoeder, gesso, glimmermist, brayer (handroller)
en een mal. Als stempels heb ik de bloemenset gebruikt van Crafty Individuals.

Use a large piece of paper.
I used a piece of thick, blank paper, 9.45 x 9.45. inch

Gebruik een groot vel papier.
Ik heb een blanco vel, 24 x 24 cm, 120 grams gebruikt.

Step 1: Use masking tape (a kind of memo paper with a sticky back)
to cover parts of the paper in a way that you create several blocks.
You can also use a larger piece of paper to cover a bigger part.

Keep the inks and ink applicators at hand for step 2.

Stap 1: Plak met behulp van maskertape (een soort van memoblaadje,
maar dat dan helemaal aan de achterzijde kleeft) gedeelten van het papier af,
zodat je verschillende blokken krijg. Gebruik een stuk papier om een groter
deel af te plakken.

De kleuren inkt en de inktapplicators liggen al klaar voor stap 2.

Step 2: sponging and stamping with distress ink, water droplets
and stamping with water.

Sponge the left part of the paper (use a sponge or an ink applicator)
and let the colors blend from light to dark. Ink the stamp with the same
color ink and press it several times on the distress ink -subsurface (possibly
without adding more ink). Use a waterpen to remove some of the ink in
the images.

Stap 2: sponsen en stempelen met distress-inkt, waterdruppels en
stempelen met water

Spons het linker vlak (met een sponsje of een inkt applicator) en laat daarbij
het verloop zien van licht naar donker. Beïnkt de stempel met dezelfde kleur
inkt en druk het verschillende keren op de distress ondergrond af (eventueel
zonder tussentijds bij te inkten). Kleur bij enkele afdrukken met de waterpen
de bloemblaadjes in, door met water de inkt van de stempel afdruk in de bloemblaadjes uit te vegen.

Put embossing ink on your stamp. Then spray a little water on it and
press the stamp on the distress ink-surface. Now you get an aqueous
stamped image. This can also be done without embossing ink, but by
using it, you get a slightly less vague stamped image.

Spray a little water in your hands, clap your hands above the paper so
that a few drops fall on your paper.

Beïnkt de stempel met embossing inkt, spray er een beetje water op en
druk de stempel op de distress ondergrond. Je krijgt nu een waterige
stempelafdruk. Dit kan ook zonder embossing inkt, maar met embossing
inkt krijg je een iets minder vage stempelafdruk.

Spray een beetje water in je handen, klap boven het papier in je handen
en laat zo een paar druppels op je papier vallen.

Step 3: inking your stamp with 2 colors ink and spraying with water

Put two colors of ink on your stamp. Spray a little water on the stamp and
press it onto the paper.

Stap 3: stempel beïnkten met 2 kleuren inkt en sprayen met water

Beïnkt de stempel met 2 kleuren inkt en spray er een beetje water op.
Druk vervolgens de stempel op het papier.

Step 4: create a background with 2 colors of ink, water and an acrylic block

Press you inkpad on the acrylic block, do so with 2 different colors.
Spray water on the acrylic block and press it on to the paper. On the photo,
you can see the ink with the water ‘move’ on the paper under the acrylic block.

Stap 4: achtergrond maken met 2 kleuren inkt, water en een acrylblok

Druk met de inktpad op het acrylblok, doe dit met 2 kleuren.
Spray er water op en druk je acrylblok op het papier. Je kunt op de foto zien
dat de inkt met het water onder het acrylblok op het papier “beweegt”.

On the next photo you can see the result of step 4 (you can possibly let
the ink dry faster by using a heat tool)

Op de volgende foto zie je het resultaat van stap 4 (eventueel kun je
de inkt sneller laten drogen door een heattool te gebruiken)

I diveded the narrow strip next (left) to the acrylic block into two rectangles.

Het smalle strookje naast de acrylblokafdruk heb ik verdeeld in twee vlakken.

For the top rectangle: Ink your stamp with embossing ink and stamp on
to the paper. Sprinkle clear embossing powder over it. Remove the excess
powder and heat the images. Then sponge 1 or 2 color distress ink on the
embossed images. The images will come forward (contrast) against the
colored paper.

Het bovenste vlak: beïnkt de stempel met embossing inkt en druk het af
op het papier. Strooi er clear embossingpoeder overheen, klop het overtollige
poeder af en verhit het. Spons vervolgens met 1 of 2 kleuren distress inkt
over de stempelafdrukken. De afdrukken komen naar voren in de kleur
van het papier.

For the other rectangle: Inkt you stamp with distress ink and press it
on the white surface. Sprinkle clear embossing powder over it and remove
the excess. Then heat it. The flower now comes forward in the color of the
ink with an extra (embossing) layer.

Het onderste vlak: beïnkt de stempel met distress-inkt en druk het af op
de witte ondergrond. Strooi er clear embossingpoeder overheen, klop het
overtollige poeder af en verhit het. De bloem komt nu in de kleur van de
inkt naar voren met een laagje.

Step 6: distress ink and gesso

Cover the paper just here and there with gesso (do not cover the
whole surface.) I used the side of an acrylic block for this. Dry with
a heat tool. Sponge ink over it and then use a baby cloth to gently wipe
off the ink of the gesso-parts. Stamp some extra images, using the same
ink color, on the background.

Stap 6: distress-inkt en gesso

Bestrijk het vlak op enkele plaatsen met gesso (hiervoor heb ik een
zijkant van een acrylblok gebruikt.) Droog dit met de heattool.
Spons er met inkt overheen en haal voorzichtig met een babydoekje
de inkt van de gesso-delen. Beïnkt de stempel met dezelfde inkt en
stempel over de achtergrond.

Step 7: distress ink and glimmer mist

Spray some glimmer mist on your craftsheet. Press your stamp
in the glimmer mist and press it one time on your craftsheet before
you stamp on the distress ink-surface. This way, you don get a clear
image but it gives a nice effect. (see strip in the bottom right)

Stap 7: distress-inkt en glimmermist

Spuit wat glimmermist op je craftsheet. Druk je stempel in de glimmermist
en druk het één keer op je craftsheet af voor je afdrukt op de distress
ondergrond. Het wordt zo geen duidelijke stempelafdruk, maar het geeft
wel een leuk effect. (zie de strook rechtsonder)

Step 8: I removed all the masking paper and tape and now there is
one, large rectangular left to work on. I divide it in half.

Stap 8: Als het maskertape is weggehaald, blijft er nog een groot,
wit vlak over. Dat deel ik weer in tweeën.

Step 9: distress ink and water

Sponge the bottom part with distress ink. Spray a little water
on the craftsheet and roll the brayer through the water. Then
roll the brayer over the distress ink-surface. A few blue ink droplets
remained on the brayer – roll those on the blank strip above.

Stap 9: distress-inkt en water

Spons het onderste deel met distress inkt. Spray een beetje water
op de craftsheet en haal daar je brayer doorheen. Ga vervolgens met
de brayer over de distress ondergrond. Er blijven een paar blauwe
inktdruppels aan de brayer hangen, rol die van je brayer af door over
het smalle strookje erboven te rollen.

Step 10: colorizing with distress ink

Press the inkpad on your acrylic block so you can use that
as your palette. Put the template on your paper. Use a waterpen
to color the letters.

Stap 10: inkleuren met distress-inkt

Druk de inktpad op je acrylblok. Leg de mal op je papier en kleur
de letters in door met je waterpen inkt van je acrylblok te halen.
Je gebruikt de acrylblok als het ware als palet.

Step 11: create a background with distress ink and water
on your craftsheet

Press 2 different color inkpads on your craftsheet and spray
a little water on it. Press a piece of paper on the ink, possibly turn,
and repeat this operation until you’re satisfied with the results.
You can use a heat tool in between to dry. Try also to “pick up the
ink drops” with your piece of paper.

Stap 11: achtergrond maken met distress-inkt en water
op je craftsheet

Druk van 2 kleuren inkt de inktpad op je craftsheet en spuit er
water op. Duw een stukje papier op de inkt, draai eventueel en
herhaal deze handeling tot je tevreden bent met het resultaat.
Tussendoor kun je drogen met de heattool. Je kunt de druppels
inkt ook “oppakken” door het papier voorzichtig op de druppels
de duwen.

Stamp with black ink, cut out the images and color the edges
with distress ink.

Stempel de afbeelding met zwarte inkt. Knip de plaatjes uit en
geef de randen kleur met distress-inkt.

Step 12: colorizing with distress ink and a sponge

Stamp your images with black ink and color them with distress ink
from the inside tot he outside using a sponge. Cut out the images
and color the edges with distress ink.

Stap 12: inkleuren met distress inkt en sponsjes

Stempel de afbeelding met zwarte inkt. Kleur deze vervolgens van
binnen naar buiten door te sponsen met distress inkt. Knip de afbeelding
uit en kleur de randen met distress-inkt.

Glue the cut out images from step 11 and 12 in the large rectangle.

Plak de uitgeknipte bloemen van stap 11 en 12 in het grote vlak.

Step 13: Finishing touches

Finally, draw “messy” lines between the different rectangles by
using a fineliner. Write with each section the used technique.
Now you have a nice overview of all the techniques and possibilities
that you can do with distress ink.
(I used a ‘chipped saphire’ distress-marker).

Stap 13: Afwerking

Tot slot: trek met een fineliner “slordige” lijnen tussen de verschillende
vlakken. Schrijf bij ieder onderdeel de gebruikte techniek, zodat je een
mooi overzicht hebt van (een kleine greep uit) de vele mogelijkheden
met distress-inkt (ik heb hier een distress-marker in de kleur ‘chipped
saphire’ gebruikt).

As you can see: even if you use different techniques, by using the same
ink (and stamps) the total remains a beautiful and coherent whole.

So: get out your distress ink, choose 2 colors, grab a large sheet of paper
and go play! Of course you do not need to do all the steps I showed, but
the more steps you do, the more you get an impression of the possibilities
with distress ink. I sometimes get the question: can this be done with
other brands of ink as well? Yes, sure! As long as it is ink that responds
to water. But once you’ve noticed how beautiful the colors of the distress
ink blend and go together you might get hooked. It also is cheaper than,
for example, Adirondac-ink. Be warned, once you start using distress ink
it is very difficult to resist the temptation to purchase more colors …

Zoals je kunt zien: ook al gebruik je verschillende technieken, door het
gebruik van dezelfde inkt (en stempels) blijft het een mooi geheel.

Dus: haal de distress-inkt tevoorschijn, neem 2 kleuren, pak een groot
vel papier en leef je uit! Je hoeft natuurlijk niet alle stappen te doen, maar
hoe meer stappen je doet, hoe meer je een indruk krijgt wat er allemaal
met distress inkt kan. Ik krijg wel eens de vraag: maar kan dit ook met
andere inkten? Ja hoor, tuurlijk! Als het maar een inkt is die reageert op
water. Maar als je eenmaal gemerkt hebt hoe mooi de kleuren van distress
inkt op elkaar zijn afgestemd en hoe fijn het werken is met distress ink –
én dat het goedkoper is dan bijvoorbeeld Adirondac-inkt … wees dan
gewaarschuwd want het is heel moeilijk om de verleiding te weerstaan
en niet nog meer kleurtjes aan te schaffen…

om dingen uit te proberen. Dit is het resultaat van alle probeersels.

People who follow me/my blog know that I’m crazy about language.
Words. Phrases. Poetry. Now you really don’t have to be a poet to play
with words – anyone can do it! I’m going to give you a number of examples
of ‘word play’ today an I’m sure there’s something fun for YOU too, that
will get you to play with words.

You can use your texts in your art journal, make a fun card with it (see
previous Quirky post) or sit down with your (grand)children at the table
and have a word game… whatever inspires you! Have fun!

Mensen die mijn een beetje volgen weten dat ik gek ben op taal.
Woorden. Zinnen. Poezie. Nu hoef je echt geen dichter te zijn om met woorden
te spelen, iedereen kan het! Ik ga jullie vandaag een aantal voorbeelden geven
– er zit vast wel iets bij waar je wat mee kunt!

Haal je (klein)kinderen erbij en speel op een regenachtige middag (die zijn
er genoeg!) een woordspelletje…Gebruik je teksten in je art journal of maak
er een leuke kaart mee (zie vorige Quirky post) – wat je wilt. Veel plezier!

Combine Book Titles / Boektitels combineren

Look at your books in a totally different way: read the titles as a sentence
and combine them to a poem! I combined three books, made a small stack
that I photographed and used the photo on a art journal page afterwards.

Kijk eens op een andere manier naar de titels in je boekenkast –
stapel je boeken op tot een gedicht! Ik combineerde drie boeken, maakte
een stapeltje dat ik fotografeerde en vervolgens gebruikte ik de foto op een
art journal pagina.

Ofcourse it is not necessary that you take a picture. You can go into
a bookstore or the library and write the titles down to form a poem
that you can use in your art.

Je hoeft natuurlijk geen foto te maken. Je kunt ook in de boekwinkel
of in de bieb rondneuzen en de titels gewoon opschrijven. Het gedicht
kun je dan weer gebruiken op je art journal pagina of zo.

Found Poetry / Gevonden Poëzie

“Found poetry is a type of poetry created by taking words, phrases,
and sometimes whole passages from other sources and reframing
them as poetry by making changes in spacing and lines, or by adding
or deleting text, thus imparting new meaning.” ~ Wikipedia ~

“Gevonden poëzie is een vorm van poëzie gemaakt door woorden, zinnen,
en soms hele passages uit andere bronnen te nemen en ze te ‘herkaderen’
als poëzie door het aanbrengen van wijzigingen of het toevoegen of
verwijderen van tekst” ~ vrije vertaling van Engelse Wikipedia tekst ~

There are a lot of ways to ‘find’ a poem – combining booktitles is one of
them – but I would like to narrow it down here to ‘find poems on a text page.’
Take a page from an old book or cut out an article page from a magazine.
Use a soft pencil to put a circle around words – from top to bottom – that
together form a new sentence or poem. Do not worry about the meaning
or grammatical correctness… this is your feeling and your poem!

Now, there are different ways to let your poem pop of the page.

Je kunt op veel manieren gedichten ‘vinden’ – het samenvoegen van
boektitels hoort eigenlijk ook tot ‘gevonden poëzie’ – maar ik wil het hier
terugbrengen tot het ‘vinden’ van de woorden op een pagina vol tekst.
Neem een bladzijde uit een oud boek of een artikel uit een tijdschrift,
omcirkel met een zacht potlood van boven naar beneden woorden die
samen een gedicht of mooie zin vormen. Maak je niet druk of het tekstueel
en grammaticaal wel helemaal klopt – het gaat om jouw gevoel en dit is
jouw gedicht!

Vervolgens zijn er verschillende manieren om het gedicht ‘naar voren te halen’

Cross out all the other words… highlight yours.

Streep alle andere woorden door en haal die van jouw naar voren.

You can also paint over all other text, only your chosen words
remain visible.

Je kunt ook alle andere tekst overschilderen, alleen jouw gekozen
woorden blijven zichtbaar.

… and then there is the cutting out words and texts.
In my ‘ Letters from the Wasteland’ series, for example,
I make use of this technique.

Search a text (an old book maybe) and cut out sentences or phrases
that speak to you. You can also combine words and phrases from
various books, magazines, leaflets etc. to form a poem or meaningful text.
The differene in size – and sometimes even colour – of the letters makes
it look playful.

… en dan is er het uitknippen van woorden en teksten.
In mijn ‘Letters from the Wasteland’ serie bijvoorbeeld gebruik ik
deze techniek.

Zoek een tekst (bijvoorbeeld een oud boek) en knip zinnen uit die jou
aanspreken. Je kunt ook woorden of zinnen uit diverse boeken, tijdschriften,
folders etc. combineren tot een gedicht of tekst waarbij het verschil in grootte –
en soms zelfs kleur – de letters/tekst lekker speels maakt.

example. If you are interested in this kind of art, you should pay a visit

as I do 😉 ) The lady (?) is a wizard with words. In the side menu, select the
category ‘found poems’ or ‘found haiku’ to see how she turns random words
into meaningful little poems.

brengen aan The odd inkwell (en niet alleen omdat het blog dezelfde layout/
template gebruikt als ik 😉 ) De dame (?) van dat blog is een tovenares met
woorden. Selecteer de categorie ‘found poem’ of ‘found haiku’ in het zijmenu,
dan krijg je alle posts op een rijtje en kun je zien hoe ze willekeurige woorden
tot zinvolle gedichtjes omtovert!

“Mail art is a worldwide cultural movement that began in the early
1960s and involves sending visual art (but also music, sound art,
poetry, etc.) through the international postal system. Mail Art is also
known as Postal Art or Correspondence Art….” ~ Wikipedia ~

the artist Ray Johnson (1927-1995) founded in 1962 the ‘ New York
Correspondence School of Art ‘ and is thus seen as the founder of the
mail art movement that developed in the 1960s and 1970s. Its aim
was to create the opportunity for the direct exchange of art, ideas and
information among artists in different countries without interference
from art dealers or galleries.

“Mail art is een wereldwijde culturele beweging die begon in de vroege
jaren zestig, waarbij beeldende kunst (maar ook muziek, poëzie, enz.) via
de traditionele postsystemen worden verzonden. [De Engelse term ‘mail
art’ wordt ook in Nederland gebruikt.] Andere namen zijn ‘Post Art’ of
‘Correspondentie kunst’.” ~ vertaling Wikipedia ~

De kunstenaar Ray Johnson (1927-1995) – die in 1962 de ‘New York

van de mail art beweging die zich ontwikkelde in de jaren zestig en zeventig.
Het doel was om kunst, ideeën en informatie onder kunstenaars uit diverse

of gallerieën.

Now I know for a fact that there are several avid card makers among
the readers of my blog. Does that make them ‘mail art artists’ then?
Well, yes and no. Yes, because homemade cards can of course be seen
as ‘art.’ No, if the card is sent in a regular envelope.

Nu weet ik dat er zich onder de lezers van mijn blog ook een aantal fervent
kaartenmaaksters bevinden. Valt dat, wat een kaartenmaakster doet, dan
onder mail art? Ja en nee. Ja, omdat zelfgemaakte kaarten natuurlijk ‘kunst’
zijn. Nee – als je die kaart in een gewone envelop verstuurd.

I have come to the conclusion that, to call it ‘ mail art ‘, the address,
postage stamps and (possible) the sender’s address have to be a
component of the image. Now I did not take an in-depth study of the topic
so I might be wrong but that does not matter when it comes to this blog post
or the assignment that I have in mind for you. After all, I am the boss of
my own blog and so I can give you the challenge to create ‘Mail Art’
according to my rules. 🙂

Ik ben tot de conclusie gekomen dat, om het ‘mail art’ te mogen noemen,
het verzendadres, de postzegels en eventueel het adres van de afzender
onderdeel van het beeld moeten zijn. Nu heb ik er niet echt een diepgaande
studie van gemaakt, dus ik kan het mis hebben, maar dat doet er voor deze
blogpost en opdracht ook eigenlijk niet zo toe. Ik ben namelijk lekker de baas
over mijn eigen blog, en dus gaan we ‘mail art’ maken volgens míjn regels. 🙂

Well uhm… I would not call it ‘rules’ – let us say there’s this condition:
whatever you make, you must be able to put a stamp on it and send it
through the snail mail. You can make a postcard with the adress on or
choose to ‘cover’ your card with an envelope – but if you do the latter,
you must decorate your envelope too – turning it into ‘art’.

Nou jaaa… ‘regels’ zou ik het niet willen noemen – ik stel maar één voorwaarde:
het moet met postzegel erop verstuurd kunnen worden. Dus of je nu een kaart
maakt en die kunstzinnig adresseert of een envelop versierd waarin je je kaart
of brief verzend maakt niet uit.

Let’s put it this way: make the postman smile by giving him something
artsy to deliver instead of those plain, boring envelopes he is used to.

You don’t have to really send your mail art, but of course it is nice to make
someone happy by doing so. Who would not love to get your mail art?
(oh, and if you really don’t know to whom you should send your art –
I am willing to sacrify myself 😀 You can email me to get my address.)

Laten we het hierop houden: gun de postbode ook een leuke dag en maak
iets wat opvalt tussen alle saaie enveloppen!

Verzenden hoeft niet maar mag wel – want naar wie je het ook verstuurd:
de ontvanger zal blij zijn met zulke leuke post in de brievenbus!

Oooops …. does this white page scare you? You’re not the only one!
Most of us know the feeling: your hands itch to make ‘something’ but
the sight of that clean, white page makes you stop. It can be such a
difficult hurdle to take. All possibilities are open – you can do on the
page whatever you feel – but instead, you block.

Oeeee…. da’s even schrikken hè? Zo’n wit vel voor je neus.
Je handen jeuken om ‘iets’ te gaan maken maar ja, die eerste hobbel –
dat witte vlak dat je aan ligt te staren – is vaak lastig te nemen.
Alle mogelijkheden liggen open maar het lijkt wel of je blokkeert…

It can even get worse… look…

Het kan nog erger… kijk maar…

It’s not just one page… it’s a book! You bought a book to work in,
or maybe even bound it yourself, and there’s not one blank page
in it, no – there are a lot. But this very first one is the hardest!
It is the first page of what you want to become your art journal.
It will be the first visible when you open the book.
Eeeckk… how will you start? This is extra hard!

Je hebt een prachtig boek gekocht of zelf gemaakt – en daarin zitten zelfs
een heleboel lege pagina’s! De ergste van deze is de aller- allereerste bladzij.
De eerste pagina in wat jouw art journal moet worden. Het eerste wat te zien
zal zijn wanneer je het boek openslaat. Dat is helemaal eng om te beginnen!

In this post I will give some examples and techniques that you can use
on that white page, so that the scary emptiness of the white disappears.

In deze post zal ik wat voorbeelden geven waarmee je die lege pagina te
lijf kunt gaan, zodat dat enge, witte vlak in ieder geval niet meer te zien is.

The easiest solution for someone who wants to start an art journal is:
don’t buy a blank book! You can find old, used books on every flea market
and they will only cost you a few pennies. Find a book with thick pages
or glue a number of pages together to form a heavy surface to work on…

De simpelste oplossing voor iemand die een art journal wil beginnen is:
koop geen leeg boek! Zoek een boek met letters erin! Op elke rommelmarkt
vind je voor een paar centen wel een oud boek. Zoek een boek met wat
dikkere bladzijden of lijm een aantal pagina’s op elkaar…

…then cover the pages with gesso.

…en bewerk ze daarna met gesso.

With a thin layer of gesso, the text will shimmer through.
Depending on how you want to work further on the page, the text adds
an extra effect which can be wonderful. You can also vary thick and
thin layers of gesso.

Bij een dun laagje gesso zal de tekst nog een beetje zichtbaar blijven. Dit kan,
afhankelijk van hoe je de pagina verder wilt behandelen, voor een mooi effect
zorgen. Je kunt ook dikke en dunne lagen gesso af laten wisselen.

(If you like to cover both the front and the back of the pages with gesso,
make sure that the gesso is dry before you put the gesso on the other side.)

(Mocht je de pagina’s zowel aan de voor- als aan de achterzijde willen
bewerken, zorg dan dat de laag gesso goed droog is voor je de andere kant
met gesso insmeert.)

When you create an art journal of an old book (or glue old bookpages on new,
white pages – that’s also possible of course) the pages won’t feel that ‘new’ and
‘clean’ anymore. It will probably make you less anxious to start creating.
After all, it’s “but an old book, bought for a few pennies ” so there’s no problem
in ruining it, right?

Maak je een art journal van een oud boek (of beplak je een wit vel met gedrukte
pagina’s, dat kan natuurlijk ook) dan is het ‘nieuwe’ er al vanaf. Het zorgt er in
veel gevallen voor dat je minder angst hebt om te beginnen. Het is immers toch
maar ‘een oud boek, gekocht voor een paar centen’ – daar kun je voor je gevoel
weinig aan verpesten, toch?

Another way to loose the fear for that blank page is, to make stains.
It actually is a bit as with a new car… you drive around totally cramped
and you’re extra carefull when you park your car… until the first scratch.
Pfew… it almost feels like a relief. Now that is done – and you can relax!

Een andere mogelijkheid om ‘los te komen’ van het witte vlak is vlekken
maken. Het is eigenlijk net als met een nieuwe auto… verkrampt rijd je
rond en je bent extra voorzichtig met inparkeren – totdat je een keer tegen
een paaltje hebt aangezeten. Pfff… dat lucht op. Nu is het ‘nieuwe’ er vanaf
en kun je heel wat relaxter achter het stuur kruipen.

So let’s scratch that white page, shall we?
I used a 12 x 12 white scrapbook cardstock background, but the technique
is fun to use in your art journal as well.

Zo kun je ook je witte vlak met verf of inkt van een ‘deuk’ voorzien.
Ik gebruikte voor dit voorbeeld een 12×12 inch scrapbook vel wit cardstock
maar deze techniek is ook heel leuk in een art journal toe te passen.

Drip ink or paint on to the page and move the sheet up and down
to make the ink/paint run.

Druppel inkt of verf op het cardstock en beweeg het vel heen en weer
zodat de inkt/verf doorloopt.

I made my stain in the corner, but ofcourse you can drip the ink
anywhere you want on the page. Next: look at the stain. What do
you see? An animal? A landscape? A human figure?

Mijn vlek is in de hoek gepositioneerd, maar je kunt natuurlijk ook een
grote vlek midden op de pagina maken. Bekijk de vlek vervolgens van
alle kanten. Zie je er iets in? Een figuur? Een beest? Een landschap?

Outline the contour of the shape you found (use whatever you like,
a black or white pen, crayons, paint… what you think fits!)

Accentueer de contouren met een zwarte stift (of krijt, of witte pen…
gebruik wat jij passend vind!)

Oh – just this in between: I used tissue paper to wipe off the extra ink.
Instead of throwing away the tissue paper, I tore it in smaller pieces…

Even een tussendoortje… ik depte met tissuepapier de overtollige inkt
van mijn pagina. In plaats van de prop in de prullebak te gooien, scheurde
ik het gekleurde papier in kleine stukken…

… and glued it onto the page. (I used mod poge, but gel medium works as well)

… die ik met mod podge op de pagina lijmde. (gel medium werkt ook goed)

Making random drops and stains on the white page is a simple way
to get your creativity to work without much thinking. I now have a
nice ‘basic’ page that I can work on some more.

Zo ben ik op een eenvoudige en creatieve manier van het witte vlak af
en er ligt nu een leuke basispagina klaar om verder op te werken.

Another way to get rid of the ‘blank page fear’ is, to glue all kinds of
paper scraps onto the page. You can use whatever you have on your
workdesk. Scrapbook paper, magazine images, newspaper and so on.

Nog een leuke manier om de ‘angst voor het witte vel’ te doorbreken is,
om de pagina met allerlei restjes en snippers te beplakken. Je kunt restjes
scrapbook papier gebruiken, maar ook foto’s uit tijdschriften, kranten-
papier enz. enz. De mogelijkheden zijn eindeloos.

If you want, you can choose scraps in one or two colours only.
When you use all kinds of colours, your page will look ‘wild’ –
which may be just the look you’re aiming for. I used scraps
in red – pinkish colours.

Je kunt er voor kiezen om alles in één tint te houden, of juist allerlei
kleuren afwisselen zodat het een bont geheel wordt. Ik koos zelf voor
dessinpapier in rood-roze tinten.

Tore strips, squares, shapes and glue everything onto the page.
Because I love seeing text, I also tore some pieces out of an
old book and glued it on to my page.

Scheur repen, vlakjes, stukken en plak je hele bladzijde vol met
de snippers. Omdat ik nu eenmaal van tekst houd, plakte ik ook
repen tekst op die ik uit een oud boek scheurde.

The page will be a mix of colour and designs… much too
‘wild’ to work on, everything you add on top of this
would blend into the background. That’s why you cover
it with a layer of gesso again. Vary thick and thin layers
where you’d like to see more or less of the background.

De pagina is nu één bonte mengeling van dessin en kleur
en veel te druk om nog verder op te werken. Smeer het
geheel daarom in met een laag gesso. Dun, waar je de
achtergrond goed wilt laten doorschijnen en op andere
plekken weer dikker.

I also pressed some tape in the gesso to add relief.

Ik plakte ook hier en daar een stukje tape in de gesso voor relief.

Now let the gesso dry.
You can use a heat tool to speed the process.
Note: if you use a heat tool, the gesso will bubble,
especially where you added a thicker layer. It will
give a special effect (which can be beautiful!)

Laat vervolgend de gesso goed drogen.
Je kunt ook een heat tool gebruiken om het proces te versnellen.
Dikkere lagen gesso zullen daarbij gaan bubbelen en de belletjes
zorgen voor een mooie structuur.

When your page is dry, you can add some more colour.
There’s all kinds of possibilities (crayons, paint and so on)
I used distress ink to add a little bit of green.

Als het geheel droog is kun je met verdunde acrylverf of
– zoals hier – met distress inkt nog wat kleur toevoegen.

By using this technique, you create a lot of layers and depth
on your page. Sometimes, this ‘background page’ is that
beautiful, that it doesn’t need much more to finish. Maybe
some journaling or a nice quote?

Door deze techniek te gebruiken, krijgt je pagina gelaagdheid
en structuur. Soms is deze ‘basis’ zelfs zo mooi, dat er niet veel
meer nodig is om het af te maken. Wat journaling misschien,
of een mooie quote?

From ‘The Chronicles’ art journal 2010 – week 47

The background is made of old encyclopedia pages, covered
with a very thin layer of gesso so that the text is readable.
The drawing – a self portrait of Jean Cocteau – that was on the page
inspired me to add a quote of him.

“As I get older, I am increasingly convinced that the only thing
that lasts, are our dreams.”

Op oude pagina’s van een encyclopedie is maar een heel dun laagje
gesso aangebracht, zodat de tekst nog goed te lezen is. De tekening
die op de pagina stond – een zelfportret van Jean Cocteau – zorgde
voor inspiratie. Met een quote van Jean Cocteau:

“Naarmate ik ouder word, raak ik er steeds meer van overtuigd dat
het enige dat echt blijvend is, onze dromen zijn”

is de pagina helemaal áf.

Prepare for a Quirky Dutch Summer!

Last Summer a lot of people joined me at my ‘Creative Summer Camp’
(an online ‘workshop-like’ event on my website) and we had a lot of fun
in our ‘virtual tents. I had the intention to ‘build’ a creative tent camp
again this year, but due to all the work for the magazine I didn’t have the
time to prepare such a workshop…

but…

… you don’t have to spend the Summer without your ‘Camp Leader.’
I looked up my whistle 😉 and came up with this idea:

As of June 12, there will be an inspirational post on my blog every Tuesday
this Summer. This will go on for 10 weeks – posts handling a theme or
a technique or… let’s say: ‘something’ that can be used as an inspiration
to get your creative juices flowing. I will think of fun, small challenges to
go with it, and you will probably have the possibility to leave your link
with each post when you played along.

Vanaf 12 juni zal er elke dinsdag op mijn blog een inspirerende post
verschijnen. De post kan in het teken staan van een thema, een techniekje
of, of… laten we zeggen: iedere dinsdag is het uitgangspunt IETS dat zal
inspireren om zelf creatief aan de slag te gaan. De posts zullen vergezeld
gaan van kleine opdrachtjes of ‘challenges’ en er zal waarschijnlijk ook een
mogelijkheid komen om je link achter te laten als je die week hebt meegespeeld

It will be like Dutch Summers usually are: some days are hot.
Some are cold. One day you are on the beach, next day you put on
a cardigan and sip tea to stay warm. Our climate here is not very stable.
‘Whimsical’ is the word for it.
Capricious.
Faddy.
Quirky.

That’s what these ‘inspiration posts’ will be.
That’s what this Summer will be!

De posts zullen zijn zoals de Nederlandse zomers: de ene dag is het warm,
de volgende dag zakt de temperatuur. De ene dag zit je op het strand,
