My friends at Casper, a relatively new mattress company based out of NYC, are on the hunt for some ‘sounds to sleep to.’ When Alyse – an employee at the company – contacted me to brainstorm about a blogpost about ‘Sounds that make you fall asleep’ I was all in and came up with the idea to extended the idea, as I thought it would be fun to make an art journal page about it. Her team was pretty excited about the idea right away. Turns out, we discovered this could be somewhat a sequel to the “Everyday Songs Post” I published a while ago. Isn’t it funny how little ideas like that can bring people of different worlds together!?

Now, in the “Everyday Songs” post I talked about songs that I wake up with in the morning… but there are no songs that I go to bed with in the evening or that make me fall asleep. In fact, I hardly sleep. I suffer from insomnia. I sleep maybe 4 or 5 hours a night, and some nights I don’t sleep at all. No song can change that, BUT…. there is a sound that I fall asleep to almost every time I hear it. That ‘noise’ comes around every year in July (that’s righ now!) so I’m catching some extra sleep these days. You know why? the Tour de France started!

Here’s the ‘story’ (scroll a bit further for the translation) and the art journal page I created.

The journaling is in Dutch, here’s the translation:
With a bag of peanuts and a nice cool drink I curl up on the couch: ready for the broadcast of the Tour de France. Each year, in the month of July, I follow this heroic cycling race. Every day , for three weeks, I install myself in front of the television in the afternoon to watch yet another stage of the bicycle race. Here come the cyclists: a mixture of bright, colored garments and helmets. Images of rotating legs. Flickering wheels and derails. The broadcast is accompanied by the muffled sound of cheering people that stand along the side of the road and the monotonous murmuring voices of the commentators Maarten Ducrot and Herbert Dijkstra. Slowly but surely my eyes get all heavy… and in no time I am asleep. No matter how exciting the stage, no matter how high the mountains the cyclists have to climb and no matter how chilling the descent: I doze off. I’ve missed quite a few thrilling finals!

I wonder what song or sound makes YOU fall asleep?

The Casper blog Pillow Talk is fun to visit with all kinds of facts and posts about sleeping or you can check out more ideas on the Casper Facebook Page!” They, as well, like to know what sounds help you hit the hay.

Some of you did not expect this from me, but every Summer I’m under
the spell of the ‘Tour de France’.
For you who don’t know what this is: The Tour de France is a bicycle race
that is made up of 21 stages and covers a total distance of 3,430.5 kilometres.
For three long weeks, I spend half of the the afternoon in front of the TV.
The first days the route leads over flat terrain which isn’t very spectacular
to watch… normally.

However, this years’ tour is thrilling and spectacular right from the beginning!
The riders seem to be nervous, and there were a lot of accidents and battles
going on in the riders platoon…

[Are you getting tired of me talking about bicycles yet?
Hang in there crafters… there’s something creative in this post too!
It’s even a video, to make up for my ‘sports-talk’]

..

‘The tour’ get’s really interesting (and scary!) though when the tour caravan
reaches the high mountains! It takes a lot of courage and sweat to climb the
‘Col du Tourmalet’ (2115 m) in the Pyrenees and the ‘Col du Galibier (2645 m)
a mountain in the French Alpes.

Heck, it even takes courage to sit on the couch in front of the TV screen…
(picture men throwing themselves from a mountain with 50 miles an hour!)

I found inspiration in the race and wrote a haiku for today’s Haiku my Heart

Tour de France
Een man op een fiets
kans op ritzege eindigt
in het prikkeldraad

Tour de France
A man on a bike
the chance to win this stage ends
abrupt in barbed wire

In my last post, I promised to spoil you today with a video that shows you
the awesome ‘thing’ I made! I keep my promises, so here it is!

https://www.maritspaperworld.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/haiku.mp4

This book combines two new (to me) binding techniques that are described
in the book Cover to Cover by Shereen LaPlantz.
(I know, I know – I never can seem to take the easy way!)
The little sign on the front are Japanese characters and says ‘haiku’.
I use this little book to collect all the haiku’s I make for Haiku my Heart.

There’s this special haiku in the ‘hidden section’ (behind the spine)

Ik gaf gehoor aan

recuerda mi corazon

een haiku per week

I responded to

recuerda mi corazon

one haiku a week

(‘recuerda mi corazon’ is the name of Rebecca’s ‘haiku my heart’ blog.
It is Spanish and means something like ‘remember my heart’)

It’s mid afternoon my friends… I’m off… it’s time…
Guess what I will be doing the rest of the day 😉

Enjoy your weekend!
