Hi, hello, goodmorning, Quirky Dutch Summer is back!

Welcome to all my Quirky online friends who, of course, are eager (at least I hope so…!) to read the first inspiration post of this series. It was about time that I picked up the QDS series again… the last series ran in 2015. I planned to organise another QDS series last year but, as most of you know, an unexpected housemove threw a spanner in the works …  well, not a spanner – it was magic powder because my beloved and I wanted nothing more than leave that ‘scary flat’ that we – due to circumstances – were forced to live in.

Anyway, we moved and settled in our new apartment and it’s with a lot of happiness and extra energy that I can focus on Quirky Dutch Summer series now. A year later than planned also means that the enthusiasm (on my part) to jump in is even bigger than ever. We are going to make it a wonderful, creative Dutch Summer!

I said ‘we’ – because as announced, I am not the only one who writes inspiring blogposts in this series. There are a number of enthusiastic guest artist-bloggers ready to share their inspiration with you too! Over the next few weeks you will see them pop up on this blog one by one.

QDS #1. Journal with a canvas cover

I kick off this Quirky Dutch Summer series with a tutorial that shows you how to bind a simple art journal – the journal looks a bit like a school exercise book (is that the right word for it?) with a soft cover and the fun is in the cover… it is made out of canvas. I got this idea a few months ago, when a friend (hi Marie!) visited me and brought her art journal… I was not only seized by the work in her self-made journal but also by the journal itself, especially the canvas cover: … but where did you gét that? It’s quite a hassle to find a piece of canvas… ” I said. “Of course not” she replied, “you just buy a cheap prepared canvas in a dollar store and cut the cloth from the frame…!”

How come I never thought of that myself…?!

So I went to a store that sells cheap canvasses – you probably have those in your neighbourhood too – and I created my first canvas-covered-journal (see this blogpost) A journal like this is easy to make and the binding is super-simple, it’s the cover that makes the journal look special and you know what? YOU can do it too!

So I made another journal like that and photographed the process… are you ready? Then Quirky Dutch Summer starts NOW…!

What do you need?

• (Cheap) canvas
• Craft knive
• Ruler, pencil
• Glue (I use bookbinding glue but other glue will probably work as well)
• Bookbinding thread (waxed cotton or other strong thread will do)
• Acrylic paint, stencils, brushes, brayers, palet knives or old credit card (and/or other ‘things’ to decorate your cover. You can think of stamps, collage images et cetera – see tutorial)
• Paper for the pages/content (see tips and ideas in this tutorial)

Buy a cheap canvas – mine costs 1.39 Euro (1.56 American dollar)

Cut the canvas cloth from the frame.

You can of course try to get the staples out (but that will cost you your nails and leave little holes in the canvas) or cut at the back of the frame but I keep it simple and cut the cloth at the front of the frame (see photo.) I don’t bother about the size – I will cut my content-paper later so that it fits the cover.

And the wooden frame? I think I’ll keep it (if I can find a space where I can store it in my overstashed atelier) I can probably use it someday in the future…

The cut out canvas is of course never quite straight… so I draw a neat rectangle and cut the canvas to square.

And here’s my plain cover! I do want to fold the edges though, to help the edge look nice and the journal will be easier to open.

Wait, I’ll get my first-made journal so I can show you. See? There’s a hem of approximately a centimeter and a half (a little less than an inch.)

It’s a good thing I looked at this older journal because now I notice that I did not decorate the back of the cover, it’s plain white and that doesn’t look nice.

I choose ‘lime’ to paint the inside/back of the cover, it looks quirky and happy now doesn’t it? (“Which side of the cloth is front and which is the back” you might ask? Well, the back of your canvas looks just a little different than the front; slightly less ‘smooth/prepared’, but it doesn’t matter much what side you put up.)

When the back is dry, flip over the canvas ’cause we will work on the front now. I used acrylic paint and stencils to decorate the front but you can use all kinds of materials and techniques… you could make a collage on the front, for example (but you will loose that ‘canvas/cloth look’ then) or stamp on it and maybe even spray ink will work? (I did not try that, I’m affraid the ink will not dry nicely and stain.)

I choose bright, happy, ‘sunny’ colors and used a brayer to add the basic layer on the canvas cloth.

And now the fun starts: I took out some stencils (and a toilet roll, I like toilet rolls to stamp with!)

You can dab the paint through the stencil with a brush (use an old brush) That way, you can apply a thin layer of paint (see the yellow herringbone motive.) You can also use a palet knife (or credit card) to smear the paint through the stencil, which gives a thick layer that adds dimension to the design.

Here’s a detail of the latter… the paint lays onto the surface.

Do take the time to let the paint dry before adding another design/color (use a heat tool to speed up the process) otherwise you will smear the wet paint when you put another stencil on it too soon.

Decorate your canvas cover the way you like… what is your style? What do YOU like? Do you prefere a calm cover – using colors in the same scheme – or do you want to go wild and add all the colors of the rainbow? It’s totally up to you!

In the end I used three stencils (the ‘herringbone’ one, the circles and the triangles.) I alse used bubble plastic and the toilet roll to stamp paint. Decorate the piece of canvas until you are satisfied with it. NOTE: if you want to add text and/or an image on your cover, stay away 0.7 inch (1,5 cm) from the edges. Remember, we will fold the edges!

Are you ready? Are you satisfied with the way your cover looks? Is the canvas dry?

Then turn it around and draw a thin line 0.7 inch (1,5 cm) from the edges (see image.) Cut the corners as indicated on the photo.

Fold and glue the edges.

So, that’s your cover! Now we go work on the content… I used per signature (in bookbinding, the word ‘signature’ refers to a group of sheets, folded in the middle, and bound into the binding together.) two sheets of thick paper. That means that there will be four pages per signature. I bind four signatures so in total (let me calculate…) I will have 16 pages in my journal. Yes? Can you follow? You can of course use more or less signatures/sheets/pages.

I used 180 gr/83 lbs Schut drawing paper but you can fill your journal with whatever paper you want (lined paper, colored paper or even fabric.) When you use thin paper, you might want to put more sheets into a signature… set up a content you like.

The size of the canvas cover is the size of the sheets minus ‘something’. Because the canvas cover folds to close the journal, the pages have to be smaller than the cover.

Let me show you: because you fold the canvas around the signatures, the signatures protrudes from the cover. I cannot give you exact measurements on this because it all depends on the size of your canvas and your paper… but I can show you!

Bundle your signatures and fold your cover around it as shown.

See how much your pages stick out? Now measure how much you need to cut from the sheets to make them fall nicely into the cover.

Fold open, my sheets look like this.

Next, we will prepare the cover for binding the signatures.

For a start, find the middle of your cover.
I have four signatures to bind – so I draw four thin lines from the middle with a 0.3 inch (o,5 cm) distance from each other. (My ‘mid-line’ is in between the inner two lines, see that?)  When you have more signatures to bind, draw more lines. (If you have an uneven number of signatures, bind one exactly in the middle.)

Now mark the place of the holes – the easy ones are the ones that are exactly in the middle.

Put one of the sheets/pages next to the lines and decide where the top and bottom binding holes have to come… mark the place approximately 0.7 to 1 inch (1,5 to 2 cm) from the top and bottom of your pages.

Use a puncture pen or needle to put holes on the marked places and do the same with your paper signatures/content. The most simple way to do that is to punch/prick the holes into one sheet of paper and then use this sheet as a template to punch the holes into the other sheets. (Fold the sheet-with-the-holes-in-it into the next signature and stick through the already visable holes.)

Ready? Then we can start binding the signatures into the cover.

Hallo, goedemorgen, Quirky Dutch Summer is terug!

Welkom aan al mijn Quirky online vrienden en vriendinnen die natuurlijk (dat hoop ik tenminste…!) staan te popelen om de eerste inspiratie post van deze serie te lezen. Het werd wel weer eens tijd ook, dat ik de QDS serie oppakte… de laatste stamt alweer uit 2015. Ik was het vorig jaar echt van plan maar zoals de meesten wel weten kwam er toen een onverwachte verhuizing tussendoor die roet in het eten gooide… of, nou ja, geen roet maar ‘magic powder’ want mijn lief en ik wilden niets liever dan wég uit de ‘enge flat’ waar we wegens omstandigheden in terecht waren gekomen. Enfin, we zijn dus verhuisd en gesetteld en heel gelukkig in ons nieuwe appartementje en nu kan Quirky Dutch Summer dan echt weer van start gaan. Een jaar later dan gepland betekent ook dat het enthousiasme (van mijn kant) nóg groter is om je te inspireren en om er een prachtige, creatieve zomer van te maken.

Zoals aangekondigd ben ik niet de enige die je inspirerende blogposts voor ga schotelen… er staan een aantal enthousiaste gastbloggers te springen om hun inspiratie met jullie te delen! De komende weken zie je ze allemaal voorbijkomen.

QDS #1. Journal met canvas kaft

Ik trap deze Quirky Dutch Summer serie af met een tutorial die laat zien hoe je een simpel art journal kunt binden – het journal lijkt een beetje op een schoolschrift met een slappe kaft maar het leuke is, dat je die kaft van canvas maakt. Ik kreeg dit idee enige maanden geleden, toen een vriendin (hai Marie!) me bezocht en haar art journal meenam… ik werd niet alleen gegrepen door het werk ín haar zelf-gemaakte journal maar ook door de kaft, die ze had gemaakt van canvas “… maar waar háál je dat dan? Het is nogal een gedoe om los canvas te kopen lijkt me…” zei ik. “Welnee” was haar antwoord, “je koopt gewoon zo’n goedkoop geprepareerd doek en dat snijd je dan los van het frame.”

Dat ik dáár nou zelf nooit aan gedacht heb…!

Op naar de Action dus… en mijn eerste canvas-kaft-journal was een feit (zie deze blogpost) Zo’n journal(tje) is heel simpel te maken – de pagina’s zijn met een super-simpele steek ingebonden, het bijzondere zit ‘m in de uitstraling van de kaft – en dat kun JIJ ook!

Ik maakte dus nóg zo’n schrift-journal om jullie te laten zien hoe ik het deed. Ben je er klaar voor? Dan trappen we Quirky Dutch Summer NU af…!

Wat heb je nodig?

• (Goedkoop) canvas doekje
• Snijmesje (Stanley mes, afbreekmesje)
• Lineaal, potlood
• Lijm (ik gebruik boekbindlijm)
• Boekbind draad (waxed katoen of ander sterk draad)
• Acryl verf, stencils, kwasten, verfrollertje, paletmes of oude creditcard (of iets anders om je kaft te bewerken… denk collage b.v. – zie verderop in tutorial)
• Papier voor de inhoud (zie tips/ideeën over inhoud verderop in tutorial)

Koop een goedkoop canvas doekje (ik kocht de mijne bij de Action voor 1,39 euro)

Snijd de canvas los van het houten frame.

Je kunt proberen de nietjes eruit te peuteren (maar dan heb je gaatjes in de rand van je canvas) of de canvas aan de achterkant los snijden maar ik houd het graag zo simpel mogelijk… ik snijd dus aan de voorkant het doek los.

En dat frame-pje? Daar kan ik vast later nog wel iets mee, dus dat bewaar ik (als ik nog een plekje kan vinden om het op te bergen *lol*)

Het uitgesneden canvas is natuurlijk nooit helemaal recht… ik teken een keurige rechthoek af op het losse doek en snijd het canvas nu mooi haaks uit.

En dit wordt mijn kaft… maar ik wil wél een omslagje aan de randen, zodat ik het journal straks wat makkelijker kan openen én om de rand mooi af te werken.

Wacht, ik pak even mijn voorheen gemaakte journal erbij zodat ik het kan laten zien… kijk, een ‘zoompje’ van een centimeter of wat. Ik zie nu ook meteen dat ik de achterkant van dit doekje niet heb bewerkt… dat ‘wit’ ziet er maar kaal uit, dat ga ik nu anders doen!

Ik geef de binnenkant van mijn kaft-in-wording een kleurtje: “Lime Green”, lekker quirky en zomers, toch?! (En wat is nou de voor- en wat is de achterkant zul je misschien vragen? Nou, de achterkant van je canvas ziet er net iets anders uit dan de voorkant, iets minder ‘glad/geprepareerd’, maar in feite maakt het niet zoveel uit welke kant je ‘voor’ of ‘achter’ noemt.)

En dan nu naar de voorkant van je canvas kaft… ik gebruik acrylverf en stencils om deze te bewerken maar je kunt hier natuurlijk allerlei technieken op los laten… je zou een collage kunnen maken op de kaft (maar dan verlies je de ‘canvas look’), of stempelen en misschien werkt spray inkt ook wel (of zou dat blijven afgeven/vlekken? Dat heb ik niet uitgeprobeerd.)

Zelf koos ik wat zomerse kleurtjes acryl verf en rolde eerst een ‘basislaag’ op het canvas doek.

Daarna haalde ik wat stencils uit de kast (en een wc-rolletje doet het ook altijd goed!)

En toen ging ik los met verschillende kleuren acrylverf.

Je kunt met een kwast de verf door het stencil tamponeren (neem niet je beste kwast hiervoor!) Je krijgt dan een dun laagje verf op je doek (zie de gele ‘visgraat’) maar je kunt de verf ook met een paletmes (of creditcard) door het stencil wrijven. De verflaag is dan dikker en dat geeft dimensie…

… kijk maar. De verf ligt mooi óp het doek.

Laat tussendoor wel steeds je verf drogen (een heat tool versnelt het proces) zodat je met een volgend stencil/kleur niet alles uitsmeert en vlekken maakt.

Bewerk je canvas kaft helemaal zoals je het zelf wilt… wat is jouw stijl? Wat vind jij mooi? Hou je het heel rustig – een journal in aardetinten of één kleurenpalet – of trek je juist alle kleurtjes die je hebt uit de kast? Dat is aan jou!

Ik gebruikte uiteindelijk drie soorten stencils (de ‘visgraat’, de cirkels en de ‘driehoekjes’) en vulde dat aan door te stempelen met bubbeltjes-plastic en een wc rolletje. Bewerk je canvas net zolang totdat je tevreden bent. Mocht je tekst of afbeeldingen op je kaft/canvas willen gebruiken, houd er dan rekening mee dat er nog ongeveer 1,5 cm aan de randen van je beeld ‘af vallen’ (de rand wordt namelijk omgeslagen, weet je nog?!)

Ben je klaar? Is je canvas helemaal droog?
Draai het doekje dan om en teken een lijn van 1,5 cm rondom. De hoeken knip/snijd je af zoals op onderstaande foto is aangegeven.

Lijm de randen nu naar binnen.

Dan gaan we nu naar de inhoud… ik gebruikte per ‘katern’ (een katern is een groepje papiervellen die je in elkaar vouwt) twee vellen papier. Dat betekent dat je dan 4 pagina’s per katern hebt. In totaal bind ik vier katernen in, dat betekent (even rekenen hoor…) 16 bladzijden. Ja? Snap je het nog? Meer of minder kan natuurlijk ook.

Ik gebruik 180 gr. Schut tekenpapier maar je kunt je journal vullen met wat je maar wilt… gekleurd of gelinieerd papier b.v. of dikker of dunner papier. Je kunt ook meer vellen papier per katern gebruiken.

De canvas kaft is de maat van je vellen papier min ‘een beetje’ omdat je de boel dichtvouwt.

Omdat je je canvas omslag om de katernen heen vouwt, moet de inhoud wat kleiner zijn dan je kaft anders steken de bladzijden uit. Ik kan je daar geen maten voor geven omdat het allemaal afhangt van de maat van jouw kaft… ik kan het wél laten zien. Kijk… leg de katernen op een stapeltje op je canvas kaft en vouw het geheel dicht.

Je ziet nu hoeveel de pagina’s nog uitsteken. Meet op hoeveel je nog ongeveer van je pagina’s af moet snijden om de pagina’s ín de kaft te laten vallen.

Opengevouwen op het canvas ziet het er bij mij zo uit.

Nu gaan we de kaft voorbereiden voor het inbinden van de katernen.

Zoek om te beginnen het midden van je kaft op.
Ik heb vier katerenen in te binden, daarom teken ik op gelijke afstand van elkaar vier dunne potlood lijnen af (op ongeveer 0,5 cm afstand van elkaar.) Mijn ‘midden’ ligt dus tussen de binnenste twee lijnen in, zie je het? Bind je meer katernen in? Trek dan meer lijnen.

Geef vervolgens de plaats van de gaatjes aan. Er komt in ieder geval een gaatje in het midden van de lijnen.

Leg vervolgens een katern naast de lijnen en bepaal waar je boven- en ondergaatjes moeten komen. Deze komen 1,5 tot 2 cm vanaf de rand van je papier/bladzijde. Teken die gaatjes af op je canvas.

Prik nu de gaatjes in je canvas met een prikpen (of naald) en doe dat ook met je papieren katernen. Het handigste is om in één vel papier de gaatjes op de juiste plaats door te prikken en dit vel vervolgens als sjabloon te gebruiken om in de rest van de vellen de gaatjes te prikken. (Schuif het vel-met-gaatjes binnen in je volgende katern en prik de gaatjes door.)

Alles klaar? Dan kun je de katernen nu in gaan binden!

Ik koos een vrolijk kleurtje draad (waxed cotton) voor de binding.

Jessica gave us the title “Frightful Fall” to work with for this bloghop… eeeckkk. I understand where the ‘frightful’ comes from, I have a lot of American friends and bloggers among my followers, but we don’t celebrate Halloween in The Netherlands so this theme was quite a challenge for me! I decided to throw my birthday in the mix and make a card that you can use to send to someone who celebrates a birthday at Halloween. Or, when you alter the sentiment, this could be a card to invite your friends to a Halloween party. Are you in the mood yet?

Well, let’s move on to the tutorial then:

• Cut a heavy white paper or cardstock to card size (this example is approx. 5″ x 7.5″)
• Paint the background with orange acrylic paint. You could also take a piece of orange card stock for the basics, but I like the texture of the paint strokes on the background.

• Next, stamp with Versamark and Jessica Sporn’s stamp Krishna
• Emboss the image with black embossing powder.

The Shiva image does not look frightful or scary at all, and because I want this to be some sort of ‘scary’ card I looked for images of ‘scary eyes’… After flipping through many (many!) magazines, cutting out all sorts of eyes, I still had not found what I was looking for so I went online and found some drawings that I could use the eyes from.

• Give the face a different, more scary look by gluing different eyes over the stamped image.

• Next, take Jessica Sporn’s Hand stencil and find the first hand you want to use. Cover the surrounding openings/hands with paper so that you cannot accidentally stamp onto these also.

• Stamp and emboss the image of the hand, coming from the edge, with black embossing powder. You could also use black acrylic paint or paint spray, but I like the glossy shine that the heated embossing powder shows.
• Repeat the above step, using different images of hands.

• Write a text/sentiment on your card (alternative: print and cut strips of the texts, use alphabet stickers etc.) I found the following texts that you could use:
  – Have a frightful & delightful birthday.
  – (You’re invited to) a trick or treat BOO-thday.
  – Have a SPOOKtacular birthday.
  – May your Halloween birthday be less terrifying than aging.
• Ink the edges of the card (hold your paper at an upright angle and run it against the edge of your inkpad)
• Splattering some black ink or paint on the card makes for a more scary/spooky look and finishes the card off.

Hi – I am so thrilled to be part of this Quirky Dutch Summer! Thank you so much Marit for inviting me to be part of the wonderful group of artists participating this year.

I design stamps for Rubbermoon, and stencils for Stencil Girl Products. So I thought I would share a tutorial showing some of the ways I use stamps and stencils. I can’t wait to see what you create!

1. Pick out two or three colors close to each other on the color wheel. I used shades of red and yellow. Lay your stencil over your background, and pounce the colors. (Here, I’m using the Dots and Dashes stencil from Stencil Girl Products.) Instead of mixing the colors together on your palette, overlap them as you pounce the colors with your cosmetic sponge. (Stenciling tip: Dab your cosmetic puff into paint, and then dab the paint off onto your palette. Then pounce on your stencil using an up and down motion.)

2. Mix your lighter color (I used yellow), with equal parts glazing medium. (You can also water down your paint, but I prefer using a medium.) Glaze over your background, eliminating any white spots while letting your stencil pattern show through. Repeat steps 1 and 2 with another stencil. (Here, I used my Squares and Circles stencil from Stencil Girl Products.) Continue until you have a background that’s pleasing to you.

3. Stamp your focal and other images onto tissue paper using black archival ink. Don’t worry about getting a great impression; we are going to paint over these images. (I’m using my Peacock Motif and Ornate Leaf  stamps from Rubbermoon.)

4. “Cut out” your stamped images by painting around them with a thin brush dipped in water. Gently separate the images from tissue paper.

5. Using matte medium, adhere your tissue paper images onto your background. Make sure to put a layer of matte medium under the images, and then brush over them with the matte medium. The white parts of the tissue paper will “disappear” as the matte medium dries, giving the illusion that you stamped directly onto your background.

6. Using contrasting colors, paint over the stamped images. Don’t worry about following the outlines exactly. This is about adding your personal touch and making the stamped images your own. Adjust your background as desired.

7. Use a cap from a tube of toothpaste or a glue stick, bubble wrap, or other household items to add some white and/or black marks over and around your images. Splatter with some paint, add dots, have fun!

8. Enjoy your creation – which will now look uniquely your own!

Supply List:

• A blank canvas, cardstock or art journal page
• Palette paper or a plastic palette
• Two or more stencils
• A stamp for your focal image, and smaller stamps or stencils for other images
• White tissue paper
• Cosmetic sponges or stencil brushes
• Assorted brushes
• Acrylic paint – I used Golden Fluid Acrylics
• Glazing Medium – I used Liquitex
• Items for mark making – toothpaste or glue stick caps, toilet paper rolls, bubble wrap, a toothbrush for splatters, etc.

Jessica Sporn,  voormalig advocaat en actrice – nu kunstenaar en moeder, tekent en schildert al zolang zij zich kan herinneren.

QDS #8. Schilderachtige effecten met behulp van stencils en stempels

Hallo allemaal – ik ben helemaal verrukt dat ik deel mag uitmaken van deze Quirky Dutch Summer serie. Dank je, Marit, voor je uitnodiging. Het is geweldig om als gastblogger in het rijtje te staan van de groep fantastische kunstenaars die dit jaar deel nemen.

Omdat ik stempels ontwerp voor Rubbermoon en stencils voor Stencil Girl Products, leek het me leuk om jullie te vergasten op een tutorial die een aantal manieren laat zien waarop je stempels en stencils kunt gebruiken. Ik kan haast niet wachten om te zien wat jullie naar aanleiding hiervan gaan maken!

1. Kies twee of drie kleuren uit die dicht bij elkaar liggen op de kleurenschijf. Ik gebruikte tinten rood en geel. Leg je stencil op je achtergrond en tamponeer de kleuren door je stencil. (Ik gebruik hier het stencil  Dots and Dashes stencil van Stencil Girl Products.) In plaats van de kleuren te mengen op je palet, overlap je de kleuren tijdens het tamponeren. Je gebruikt hiervoor het beste een sponsje. (Stencil tip: dep je sponsje in de verf, deb het vervolgens een paar keer op je palet voordat je met snelle op-en-neer bewegingen de verf door je stencil tamponeert.)

2. Meng nu een lichte kleur verf (ik gebruikte geel) met gelijke delen ‘glazing medium’. (Je kunt ook je verf met water verdunnen, maar ik verkies het gebruik van dit medium.) Breng de verdunde kleur over op je achtergrond en werk daarbij de witte plekken op de pagina weg terwijl het patroon van het stencil zichtbaar blijft. Herhaal nu stap 1 en 2 met een ander stencil. (Ik gebruik Squares and Circles van Stencil Girl Products.) Werk op deze manier door tot de achtergrond naar je zin is.

3. Stempel nu met zwarte Archival inkt de afbeelding(en) die je wilt gaan gebruiken op tissue papier. Maak je geen zorgen als de afdruk niet perfect is; we gaan namelijk toch over de afbeelding heen schilderen. (Ik gebruik de stempels Peacock Motif en Ornate Leaf van Rubbermoon.)

4. Neem nu een dun penseeltje en ‘schilder’ met water rondom de gestempelde afbeelding. Je kunt de afbeelding nu heel gemakkelijk los scheuren.

5. Bevestig de tissue-afbeelding nu met behulp van een mat medium (b.v. Mod Podge of Gel Medium) op de achtergrond. Breng een laagje medium aan op je achtergrond, leg je afbeelding erop en breng ook een laagje medium op de bovenkant aan. De witte gedeelten van het tissue papier ‘verdwijnen’ als de medium is gedroogd. Zo krijg je de illusie dat de afbeelding rechtstreeks op je achtergrond gestempeld is.

6. Schilder nu over je gestempelde afbeelding heen. Gebruik hiervoor contrasterende kleuren en maak je geen zorgen of je wel ‘binnen de lijntjes’ blijft. Door er overheen te schilderen geef je de afbeelding namelijk een geheel eigen draai en een persoonlijke ‘touch.’ Pas het beeld en de achtergrond aan zoals jij dat wilt.

7. Gebruik een dop van een tube tandpasta, de achterkant van je kwast, bubbeltjes folie of andere huishoudelijke artikelen om witte en zwarte afdrukken te maken rondom de hoofd-afbeelding. Spetter ook eens met verf of teken stippeltjes… voel je vrij!

8. Tenslotte: geniet van je creatie, die er nu helemaal uniek en eigen uit ziet!

Ik maakte ook een versnelde video van het werkproces. Ik praat natuurlijk in het Engels, maar de videobeelden laten helder en duidelijk alle hierboven vermelde stappen zien.

Materiaal lijst:

• Een canvas, een vel cardstock of een blanco art journal pagina
• Een palet om je verf op te mengen
• Twee of meer stencils
• Een grotere stempel voor je ‘hoofdbeeld’ en kleinere stempels of stencils voor de andere afbeeldingen.
• Wit tissue papier (bv. witte servetten of zakdoekjes)
• Sponsjes (bv. make-up sponsjes of speciale ‘stencil brushes’)
• Een aantal grote en kleinere penselen en kwasten
• Acryl verf – Ik gebruik Golden Fluid Acrylics
• Glazing Medium – Ik gebruik Liquitex
• Diverse objecten om mee te stempelen: dopjes, toilet rollen, bubbeltjes plastic, een tandeborstel om mee te spetteren etc.

I love poetry.
I am especially fond of ‘found poetry’, and I mean found in all its forms… found in book titles, found in magazines, on book pages, cut out words and sentences – you name it. There is so much possible when it comes to ‘found poetry’… and this kind of poetry is also great to use on art journal pages also.

I therefore started FOUND POETRY FRIDAY – everyone is welcome to play along!

Some time ago, Michelle LaPoint Rydell asked me: It would be really neat to see a blogpost of how you go about coming up with your poems. Do you lay a whole bunch of phrases out and then pick from that or do you look for certain words or how does that work?

There are several ways to find a poem – for one thing, it depends on if you want to create a poem with booktitles or maybe you like to tore out an old bookpage on which you outline certain words. However, today I show you the process I went through to find a poem from cut out words and sentences.

I created this background in my art journal earlier this week, and now I grabbed it to use the pages as a base for my found poem. I took step-by-step photos during the process… you can enlarge each photo for a better view. Enjoy!

And here’s the finished art journal spread… (I must confess, I like the ‘detail photo’ above better than the spread… the orange paint came out a bit too harsh.)

The Daily Paper Prompt I came up with is about getting inspired by the rhythm of music. I took photos during my creating process that make a little tutorial. Are you in for that? Come on in then…

DPP #61 – Create to the Rhythm of the music

First, I taped a big piece of blank paper onto cardboard and placed it on my easel.

I then put some paint on my palet. At this point, I did not know what music would be my inspiration, so I choose random colours that spoke to me at that moment.

I decided to work with a palet-knife but you can choose whatever material or tool you like:
brush and paint, pencils, crayons, pens and so on…

Now that my materials were in place, I was ready to go so I turned on the radio.
I had no idea what music would be on. The radio played a song I never heard before
and I just went with it. I started to smear paint on the paper to the rhythm of the song.

This is the image I ended up with… created to the tune with paint and a palet knife.

The fun thing about this way of creating is, that the song does not need to have lyrics.
You can even put on a cd with classical music – or hiphop, or house music… anything goes.

After I’d created this background, I got curious to what the song had been all about… so I looked on the internet and found the playlist of the radio station. The song was Waves by Mr. Probz, a Dutch rapper/artist I did not know. I had not thought he was a rapper, as the song does not sound like ‘rap’ to me – I kinda like it even!

I also found the lyrics of the song here and was surprised when I read those… I had used just the right ‘watery’ colours! Then, I saw an image of a lighthouse and a boat (sail) popping out to me from the background, so I scribbled with a crayon and did some machine stitching to bring those shapes out.

The lighthouse deserved more attention, so I cut out the shape from old dictionary pages, sprayed a bit of ink on it and glued it onto the page. I added a moon (0r is it a sun?) and I journaled part of the lyrics on top of it.

Hi there lovelies! Are you used to January yet?
The New Year finally has settled in my mind – but I’m still a bit confused about the “3” in the number… it means I will turn 50 this year. Eeeckkk!

I suddenly got the jitters the other day to ‘clean up’ my blog but I guess that’s normal to want to start “clean” when a new year starts. For your information: If you look at the top menu (waaayyy on top) you will see I re-arranged my galleries and also added a new page. I’ll take you through it:

• Home = obvious, you all know “Home” don’t you?
• About = obvious too, learn more about me there.
• Resume = I may have to work on that page. I’m not really sure what to do with it, what info goes/stays in, what goes out… I will think about it some more. For now I leave it as it is.
• Blog series = a new page! This page will make it easy for you to find specific series of blogposts. I plan to do more ‘series’ on my blog in the future and if I do, I will add the links there.
• Art Journals = galleries showing my various art journals.
• Chronicles = special galleries for my Chronicles – I though I’d keep them together so you can find all the former “Chronicles” art journals there.
• Other = well… ‘other’, like mono-types, ATCs, mail art and so on.

Besides re-arranging the top menu, I also made similar looking buttons that link to my website and social media pages… you can find them in the side menu. Before it was a bit messy with a little ‘twitter bird’, a facebook badge et cetera.

So far for the household notes – let’s move on to something creative shall we?

On this first page I reflected on my OLW (One Little Word) that I chose for the coming year. My word for 2013 is PERSEVERE (see this post)

I made the first spread for week 1 in my new Chronicles art journal and I thought, since a lot of you asked before, I’d take photos of the process. I know a lot of you want to know how I work on these pages.

My way of working on these spreads changed over the years. I started with working on the spread during the week, adding something every day. Eventually, that didn’t work for me. The spreads looked disjointed when finished. Also, unexpected events could happen during the week and when it did, there was no room left on the pages to write about it or the ‘feel’ of the page was all wrong (for instance, I started with a bright background and then it turned out to be a grumpy week.)

Luckely, I found a routine that works for me. I have a piece of scrap paper laying in the book on which I jott down what happens during the day. Just short notes. At the end of the week (mostly on Sunday) I start with making the spread. I make it in one or sometimes two sessions.

Most of you who follow me for longer then a year recognize this logo…
and the story behind it. For those who don’t know, a brief history
(more posts will follow later!)

From Christmas to New Year,  the Radio 2 team presents the 2000
favorite songs of the listeners. Music! 24 hours a day!
A few years back, in the slipstream of the top 2000, I started my
‘top 2000 blog party‘. I created art every day inspired by a song
from the list. Everyone was invited to play along and create to
the music – and I posted all the submissions on my blog.
What succes it was! Even the top 2000 people picked up my ‘party’
and came to film me, the video can still be seen here on youtube.

This will be the fourth year that we will have this artful and musical
blog party, and I know for sure that a lot of participants look forward
to it as much as I do!

More information and ‘rules’ will be posted on my blog once the
‘official list’ is out… but that list should be composed still… and that is
where today’s blogpost comes in!
