It has come to my attention that a lot of woyww-participants prefer a short post showing only the picture of the workdesk. I am not the type for very short posts – so feel free to skip the ‘tale’ and scroll right to the bottom of this post to find my workdesk.<\/em><\/p>\n

Last month, I showed you the following picture of my scrapbook albums and asked you which album I should open and which layout I should pick out to show you…<\/p>\n

The first request that came in was from my SIL Yvonne (Goodmorning dear! How are you doing up there? How’s the weather in Canada? Big hug for you and bro!) <\/em>and she asked me to open album 5 and show layout #20… here is what I found<\/p>\n

I made this layout in January 2010 for the Gutter Girlz<\/a> – a challenge blog that is now merged with A Year in the Life of an Art Journal<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The challenge back then was:<\/p>\n

\nPRODUCT\/TECHNIQUE: Chain<\/p>\n

This layout spawned a blogpost in which I asked my readers to criticize it… and the reactions made me reflect on criticism in blogland – and how we always are so nice to each other and yell ‘gorgeous’ even if we don’t mean it… I won’t repeat it all here, but you can read the old post \u00e1nd comments HERE<\/a><\/p>\n

The next page shows that my taste in colors has not changed much since then, but that’s not why I show it to you. I regularly get questions from people who ask me how I do my lettering – where to start et cetera. I though I’d make you some photos of the process of this page that also shows the ‘birth’ of the title\/text.<\/p>\n

This is the ‘basic’ page. I made this with the ‘resist technique’ (using oil pastels) that Michelle LaPoint-Rydel<\/a>l teaches in our workshop Mixed Emotions<\/a>.<\/p>\n

At this point, I didn’t like the page much. I found the lines that the oil pastel left too rough and thick. I’m used to working precisly and this technique just does not allow you to… I did like the fun colours and hearts though, I thought it looked kinda ‘flower power’, so I decided to go for the ‘sixties-look’.<\/p>\n

First, I made a border from paper scraps cut out of old magazines. When you focus on details and pattern only, you can find wonderful little pieces or parts of photos to cut out and that – glued together – make a bright and funky border.<\/p>\n

I started to like where this page was going!<\/p>\n

Sometime along the process, I was beginning to hum a song… the image must have evoked that. Although it was not a ‘sixties-song’, I decided to use the Elvis-text on this page.<\/p>\n

First, I sketched out the letters with a soft pencil. This gives you the possibility to erase the lines and start over when the lettering is not to your satisfaction or when the words don’t fit.<\/p>\n

When the letters seemed fine, I ‘sketched’ them again with a white sharpie. After that, I erased the pencil lines.<\/p>\n

Next: I coloured the letters and defined the shapes even better.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

I finished by outlining the letters. I also gave the border more contrast with a black marker. Last moment, I coloured the ‘head’ with a yellow crayon.<\/p>\n
