Last Sunday was Middelburg Boekenstad<\/em> (‘Middelburg Booktown’) in the town I live. An event that I heard of months ago… and since my art journals are books – even hand bound books – I had the nerve to contact the local bookstore to tell them about my art journals. They offered me a space in the bookstore to present my journals and promote art journaling. So here I am, sitting at the table with a collection of my journals. (Oh, and see, they even made a placard for me… pretty exciting, to see my name printed on a poster!)<\/p>\n

I just love our local bookstore De Drvkkery<\/a> – I’m a bookworm and I can spend hours in a bookstore, just sniffing (don’t you think books smell awesome?!) and drooling (oops, no – not really, I wouldn’t dare) over the latest novels, art books and magazines. My beloved is not much of a reader but he don’t mind going to this bookstore, as they have a great collection of music too. Last Sunday, he took a small advertising magazine from the store home with him – it handles new released music albums – and I was struck by the advertisement on the back.<\/p>\n

This add reminded me of Russian Constructivism<\/a> and the typography on the posters in that period. Here are some examples. (The image at the bottom-left is not authentic from that period. It is a jazz-poster from 1979, influenced by Constructivism)<\/p>\n

Why do I tell you all this?
\nWell, I thought it would be fun to make a week-page in my ‘Chronicles’ art journal inspired by these posters… and that is what you see lying on my desk today!<\/p>\n

It’s quite a puzzle to get the words and lettering right! As you can see, I work on a loose sheet of paper that lays flat on the table\u00a0 to be able to use a ruler and measure the angles. I will glue the page in my journal once it’s finished.<\/p>\n

Is there any other desker working with typography at the moment? Let me know, so I can come over to take a look – I’m all into lettering right now! (Talking about lettering… Tammy from Daisy Yellow<\/a> has a series about letter-drawing on her blog, it is an easy, fun series and I recommend it if you like to learn more about drawing letters.<\/p>\n
