QDS #3. <\/strong>Playing with Shadows
\n<\/strong><\/h2>\n

At the end of the day a few weeks ago, a guy appeared on the wall of my atelier. I’d seen this little man before – he hangs in front of my window you see. There hangs the dream catcher that my (unfortunately deceased) dear blog friend Joe “Spadoman” Spado made for me and I had noticed before that there is a face hidden in the dream catcher. However, the shadow on the white wall made the little guy really come to life.<\/p>\n

Shadows… they are all around us. They give you a different view of the normal things and form the most beautiful patterns.<\/p>\n

I made this picture a few years back in our previous home – the shadow of the blinds on the wall.<\/p>\n

On the next picture, the specks on the wall are caused by the leaves of a bush with the sun playing through (with on the right the shadow of the blinds again.)<\/p>\n

Using photo’s of shadows in your journal<\/strong><\/p>\n

The easiest way is to print the photo and glue it onto your art journal page. The “face on the wall” – I baptized him “Joe” – got a place in my Chronicles art journal. I printed the photo, cut out the shadow and stuck it on my weekly page. Here you can see the basics of what had to become the page for week 25.<\/p>\n

\nI added a bit more contrast to the shadow by outlining some of the lines with a marker and journaled around the photo.

The Chronicles of Marit 2015 – Week 25<\/strong><\/p>\n

I had not yet enough of playing with shadows so I chose the photo with the leave-specks to create another journal page. I edited the photo digitally in Photoshop so that it became even more abstract than it was. I printed it and pasted the photo into my “Purple Art Journal.”<\/p>\n

I use my ‘Purple journal’ especially for ‘found poetry art’ so I went looking for phrases and words that I could use with this image. I finally found this ‘poem:’<\/p>\n

I liked the colors of the print so I mixed acrylic paint in similar tones. Then I painted over the print. Not too neatly, I used the original image only as a composition reference to paint an abstract looking image.<\/p>\n

I then positioned and glued the sentences of the poem on the page and finished it by drawing a frame around the image – referring to the last sentence.<\/p>\n

The next artwork (created on an index card) is an oldie. I created it in June 2013 inspired by a photo that I saw in a magazine of poles in the snow throwing long shadows. (Sorry, I cannot find the original photo anymore.)<\/p>\n

More ideas and inspiration with shadows!<\/strong><\/p>\n

The following picture is probably well-known to most of you: a photo of your own shadow. Now you might, for example, paste a picture like this on the first page of a new art journal. It is personal, and yet a little different than a ‘normal photo’ or a selfie… You could also make an art journal page about yourself and illustrate it with a shadow picture. For example: write some things about yourself (description\/characterization) in the shadow using a white pen. Or make a page on which you sum up your good qualities (written around your shadow) versus bad qualities (written IN the shadow.)<\/p>\n

You can also stage your image and use the photo of a shadow in a different way. For this, you have to think up in advance of what you want to end up with. (see photos) Create and photograph the shadow that you need. Print your photo and add drawings or collage to it to create the effect you want. (The shown photos are probably edited digitally but you can of course use this idea to make a collage.)<\/p>\n

Ordinary objects can throw strange shadows. A ring placed on an open book with the light falling on it in a certain angle makes for a heart-shaped shadow on the pages. (I saw many photos of this where a wedding ring was used.)<\/p>\n

I found the above photo on the Internet as part of a blogpost that was about ordinary objects making bizarre shadows… it is really worth to click this link and be amazed – it might bring even more ideas and inspiration to work with shadows: 23 Shadows Turned into Something Far More Amazing <\/a><\/p>\n

Look around you this week and notice not only the things that surround you but also the shadows they make. I can’t wait to see what beautiful images you discover!<\/p>\n

QDS #3. Spelen met schaduwen<\/strong>
\n<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Een paar weken terug, aan het eind van de dag, verscheen er een mannetje op de muur van mijn atelier. Nu had ik dat ‘mannetje’ al wel eens voor mijn raam zien hangen want de dromenvanger die mijn, helaas overleden, blogvriend Joe “Spadoman” Spado voor mij maakte draagt een gezicht in zich. De schaduw op de witte muur liet dat gezicht nu wel heel duidelijk uitkomen.<\/p>\n

Schaduwen… ze zijn overal om ons heen. Ze geven je een andere kijk op de normale dingen om ons heen en vormen de prachtigste patronen.<\/p>\n

Deze foto maakte ik een paar jaar terug in ons vorige huis – de schaduw van de luxaflex op de muur.<\/p>\n

En op de volgende foto worden de vlekjes op de muur veroorzaakt door de bladeren van een struik, waar de zon doorheen speelt (en rechts, op de deur, opnieuw een luxaflex-schaduw.)<\/p>\n

Ik vond het hoog tijd worden om schaduwen eens als inspiratie aan te grijpen en jullie daarin te laten delen. Ik zal laten zien hoe bovenstaande foto’s in mijn art journals terechtkwamen. Daarnaast zocht ik nog meer schaduw-inspiratie voor jullie… en kwam een aantal geweldige idee\u00ebn en tips tegen. Lees dus vooral door…<\/p>\n

Foto’s van schaduwen gebruiken in je journal\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Foto’s van schaduwen kun je natuurlijk gewoon als foto uitprinten en in je journal plakken. Het “mannetje op de muur” – ik doopte hem ‘Joe’\u00a0 – kreeg zo een plekje in mijn Chronicles art journal. Ik printte de foto, knipte het mannetje uit en plakte hem op mijn wekelijkse pagina. Hier zie je de basis van wat week 25 moest worden…<\/p>\n

\nHet ‘schaduwmannetje’ is wat aangezet met een marker. De tekst er omheen vertelt het verhaal.<\/p>\n

Ik had nog niet genoeg van schaduwen dus ik koos de foto met de ‘bladeren\/vlekken’ en bewerkte hem in photoshop, zodat het beeld er nog abstracter uit kwam te zien. Vervolgens printte ik de bewerkte foto uit en plakte hem in mijn ‘Paarse art journal’.<\/p>\n

In dit journal werk ik vooral met ‘found poetry’ (gevonden gedichten) dus ik ging op zoek naar zinnen en woorden die bij dit beeld passen. Ik vond uiteindelijk dit ‘gedichtje’:<\/p>\n

De kleuren van de print bevielen me wel, dus ik mengde verf in soortgelijke tinten. Vervolgens schilderde ik over de print heen. Niet al te netjes, het oorspronkelijke beeld gebruikte ik alleen als referentie voor de abstracte vlakverdeling.<\/p>\n

Ik positioneerde de zinnen van het gedicht op het beeld, tekende met krijt een frame op de bladzijde om de laatste zin te benadrukken, en dit is het uiteindelijke resultaat.<\/p>\n

Het volgende werk maakte ik in juni 2013, ge\u00efnspireerd door een foto in een tijdschrift van paaltjes in de sneeuw die lange schaduwen werpen op de witte ondergrond. (ik kan de oorspronkelijke foto helaas niet meer terugvinden.)<\/p>\n

Nog meer idee\u00ebn en inspiratie met schaduwen!<\/strong><\/p>\n

Het volgende beeld is ons allemaal wel bekend: fotografeer de schaduw van jezelf. Je zou een foto als deze bijvoorbeeld op de eerste pagina van een nieuw art journal kunnen plakken. Het is persoonlijk, en toch net weer iets anders dan een portret… of maak een art journal pagina over jezelf en illustreer deze met zo’n schaduwfoto. Schrijf met witte pen een aantal eigenschappen van jezelf in de schaduw \u00f3f schrijf bijv. je ‘goede eigenschappen’ om de schaduw heen en je ‘slechte eigenschappen’ IN de schaduw…<\/p>\n

Je kunt ook afbeeldingen in scene zetten waarbij je gebruikt maakt van schaduwen. Je moet hierbij wel even van tevoren bedenken wat je uiteindelijk uit wilt gaan beelden. Fotografeer de schaduw zoals jij ‘m nodig hebt. Print je foto uit en maak het beeld af met bijvoorbeeld tekeningen of collage. (Onderstaande foto’s zijn waarschijnlijk digitaal bewerkt maar zo’n effect kun je natuurlijk ook met collages bereiken.)<\/p>\n

Voorwerpen kunnen vreemde schaduwen veroorzaken. Een ring op een opengeslagen boek werpt in het juiste licht een hartvorm op de bladzijden… (ik zag hiervan veel voorbeelden waarbij een trouwring was gebruikt – wat natuurlijk mooi symbolisch is.)<\/p>\n

Bovenstaande foto vond ik online in een post waarin nog v\u00e9\u00e9l meer bijzondere foto’s van schaduwen te zien zijn… het is echt de moeite waard om de link aan te klikken en je te verbazen (en misschien nog meer idee\u00ebn op te doen!) 23 Shadows Turned into Something Far More Amazing<\/a><\/p>\n
