However, for this Quirky post I dived into the world of lists and found a lot of semi-scientific articles and funny facts… oh, and a LOT of lists!

Why make a list?

Making a list clears your head. For example, you write down the things that you don’t want to forget, so you won’t have to keep it in your head. You only have to look on your list to remember. Making a list also helps you think on paper. When you write things down, you literally ‘stand back’ from the facts and by doing that, changes are you view the facts in a more objective way. Making a list makes you feel more in control of your time and your tasks, your life even…

“That sense of control is the main reason why people like to make lists,” says the Dutch Professor of psychology and writer René Diekstra. “A list creates order out of chaos. Not only practical, but above all in your head. ”

To-do lists

“To Do lists” are the best known lists. By writing down the things you ‘must do’ you get an overview of your tasks and that helps to manage your time. Also, it is a great feeling to check off the finished tasks during the day. Some people even put tasks on their To Do list that are allready finished (or that are very simple to finish) just to get that satisfying feeling of checking it off again. Making such a list works for a lot of people but do remember: your tasks and your days (life) cannot always be captured in an efficient list.

Johnny Cash’ to-do list sold at auction for $6,250 in 2010.

Bucket List

A Bucket List is a list of things you want to do before you die. It originates from the term “Kick the Bucket” which is considered slang for dying.

It became popularized a household term after the movie The Bucket List came out in 2007. The movie is about two men, Edward and Carter, who meet for the first time in the hospital after both have been diagnosed with terminal lung cancer. Carter begins writing a “bucket list”, things to do before he “kicks the bucket”. After hearing he has less than a year, Carter discards the list. Edward finds it the next morning and urges Carter to do everything on the list (and adds more things to do) and offers to finance the trip for both of them. Carter agrees and the men begin their around-the-world vacation.

Of course you don’t have to have a terminal illness to make a Bucket list. Maybe you have some wishes or want to achieve some things in your life… why wait until the last moment then? At least write them down! A bucket list can be seen as a reminder for yourself, it points out what is important to YOU and the goals you are working towards. A bucket list is not a definitive list either. It may be that a few years from now you find things on the list that aren’t important to you anymore and you can add new goals along the way. A lot of websites and groups can be found online where people share their Bucket List. If you would you like to gain ideas for your own list, check out this site.

The List of 100

The List of 100 is a powerful technique you can use to generate ideas, clarify your thoughts, uncover hidden problems or get solutions to any specific questions you’re interested in.

The technique is very simple in principle: state your issue or question in the top of a blank sheet of paper and come up with a list of one hundred answers or solutions about it. (…)

“One hundred entries? Isn’t that way too many?”

Bear with me: it’s exactly this exaggeration that makes the technique powerful.

When starting your list you may believe that there’s no way to get it done. But then, at some point during the exercise, you will have your subconscious mind naturally engaged in the process. That’s when you will uncover many new and surprising answers, and ideas will start flowing again. Making a List of 100 is a beautifully articulated cooperation between the conscious and subconscious minds tackling one single problem.

The above text is copied from this blogpost: Tackle Any Issue With a List of 100 where you can find a lot more information about the “List of 100.”

Random lists

Now let’s go back to my “28 Lists” art journal…

On March 9, 2011 I wrote ( see this post )

“Being over-active last week, I got stuck in all my journals last days. LISTS seems a great topic for this week’s Quirky post so here’s the ‘prompt: “make and/or use a list.” You can, for example, create an art journal page on which you add your shopping list. Or maybe you want to write a Bucket List and illustrate it?

I myself plan to create another ‘List journal’ for which I cut a few pages and cardboard cover (3.9 x 8.2 inch.) It’s not going to be a very complicated journal, just a small and easy book. No fancy handbinding either. I picked out a number of topics that appealed to me and added a few ‘prompts’ of my own. Here’s the list that I plan to create with:

Places I lived

Cloths I once wore (and that are not in my possession anymore) OR what I’m wearing today

Favorite songs OR Today’s playlist

Favorite movies

Ways to relax

“Firsts…” (first kiss, first car, first… whatever)

What would I do if I were a zillionaire

Things I did last Summer

What makes me happy

Things I never did (but would like to do sometime)

Favorite smells

Why I love Spring/Summer/Fall/Winter

Things I like to touch

What changed my life

Random facts

Things that I hate

Favorite artists

This is just a quick selection and I don’t know if I will create a list for every one of these topics, but since I bind my journal with rings I can always take out or add pages to my liking.

Schrijf daaronder 100 oplossingen of antwoorden.

Any Issue With a List of 100

Willekeurige lijstjes

Wat me gelukkig maakt

Favoriete geuren

Waarom ik hou van Lente/Zomer/Herfst/Winter

Dingen die ik graag aanraak

Wat mijn leven veranderde (“Highlights”)

Willekeurige feiten over mij

Waar ik de pest aan heb

Favoriete kunstenaars
