Can you believe we’ve come to the last Quirky post? Those ten weeks flew by in a flash and it was so much fun! A lot of crafters dived in and shared their work, mostly in the Facebook group. Thank you all for the nice comments, wonderful art and inspiration! A huge THANK YOU goes to my Quirky guest: Jenny<\/a>, Nel<\/a>, Sharon<\/a>, Willy<\/a>, Zsuzsa<\/a> and Tracey<\/a> – you girls made this series extra colorful and special!!! Because I enjoyed it so much, I give away this art journal that I created as an example for the first QDS post.<\/p>\n

QDS #10. Create with (and to) the music
\n<\/strong><\/h2>\n

There\u2019s not a person to be found that has not made some connection with music. Some songs make us feel joyful while others raise poignant memories or remind us of people we once knew, and we all have our own preferences for a particular music genre.<\/p>\n

Various studies have shown that especially the music from our teenage years evokes the strongest emotions. That is not surprising, considering the fact that our teenage years mark the time that we form our own identity, spread our wings and take the first steps into the big world to build a life of our own. These years of growth and change are often accompanied by music: popular music on the radio, TV or YouTube, music recommended by our friends, songs accompanying a night out. In our teenage years, lay the basis of what we later will refer to as \u201cthe soundtrack of our lives.\u201d<\/p>\n

The music that certainly has it’s place in my own ‘soundtrack of my life’ is from the artist Leonard Cohen. When I had just discovered my creative niche – art journaling – I made my first art journal in 2009 using lyrics of this singer-songwriter. This was my very first ‘***conscious’ art journal spread I ever made<\/a> (*** I created small books before which I called mini albums, but those were more scrapbook related books…)<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

I bound all the ‘Leonard Cohen’ spreads together in a book (well, not ‘bound’, I didn’t know how to bind books back then yet. I created on old bookpages and glued them back into the cover; a so called ‘altered’ book.)<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

The next ‘music journal’ that I started was made out of old album covers (you can find amazing albums\/covers in second hand stores or garage sales) extended with extra cardboard pages. I used duct tape to connect the pieces together and gessoed the cardboard. Some pages are half the size, and they fold in all directions.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Next is one of the pages from the ‘album cover journal.’ (I must admit that I never finished this journal, it is still an unfinished project sitting on the shelf ’cause I find the pages rather big and therefor difficult to work on…)<\/p>\n

The Doors – People Are Strange<\/strong><\/p>\n

From big to small…. ATC’s<\/a> inspired by music… see how much you can do on such a small size?!<\/p>\n

So you see, I get inspired by music and I am not the only one. That’s why my annual Top 2000 music party (which I host since 2009) is such a huge succes. The Dutch Top 2000 list is a big inspiration source to many. I bind a special art journal for it every year, it’s quite a stack!<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Those were a few random examples – now let’s take a closer look at creating to the music, because there are various ways you can get inspired by songs.<\/p>\n

Art inspired by musicians (the person)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Are you a fan of a certain artist? Do you like the look or personality of a certain musician? You don’t necessarily have to like his or her music (but you can, of course) to be inspired. Here’s some examples:<\/p>\n

Sometimes the title of a song is enough to inspire you, even without hearing the song or knowing what it’s about you can create something…<\/p>\n

Fly Like An Eagle<\/strong><\/em> (Steve Miller Band) – made by Monique Pol<\/p>\n

Art inspired by title + lyrics<\/strong><\/p>\n

The next examples show art that uses not only the title, but include (some of the) lyrics too.<\/p>\n

Titles<\/strong><\/em> (Barclay James Harvest) – made by Herma Starreveld. (The lyrics of this song are all Beatles-song titles, merged to form a new story…)<\/p>\n

Appleknockers Flophouse<\/strong><\/em> (Cuby and the Blizzards) – made by me\/Marit. (Years ago, a friend gave me an art flyer she took from a gallery. There was an image on the cover that made me think: “now that looks like an ‘Appleknockers Flophouse!’ Not that I knew what an ‘appleknocker flophouse’ was and I have no idea where I got the association from… it just felt that way. Years later, I used the image on this art journal spread.)<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Art inspired by the content and meaning of the song<\/strong>.
\n<\/strong><\/p>\n

Where is the Love<\/em><\/strong> (Black Eyed Peas) – made by Yvonne Calliber. (A song about a world issue\/matter… Yvonne wrote part of the lyrics around the border. The image – collage and doodles – reinforces the text.)<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

You’re The Inspiration<\/em><\/strong> (Chicago) – made by me\/Marit (Minimalistic but powerful: lyrics from his favorite band as a declaration of love on the page.)<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

For What It’s Worth<\/em><\/strong> (Buffalo Springfield) – made by Michelle LaPoint Rydell (This song, from 1966, is about student demonstrations and protests in the USA. It can be seen as a so-called anti-war song. Michelle shows how it is still very current today.)<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Art inspired by songs that evoke a personal memory or has therapeutic value.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Can you relate to this: you hear a song on the radio and suddenly you’re back in time “this is the song that my mother always sang. That’s the song they played at Summer camp. Oh, and that song was high in the charts when I… (you name it.)\u00a0 These memories that go with a certain song are great to put on paper. Create for example a scrapbook lay out and use photos picturing the time your memory\/the song is about, or make an art journal page like I did (see below.)<\/p>\n

Domino<\/strong> <\/em>(Clouseau) – made by me\/Marit (the journaling is in Dutch but I translated it to English once. You can read it in this old blogpost<\/a>.)<\/p>\n

Oh Well<\/strong><\/em> (Fleetwood Mac) – made by me\/Marit. (At the end of 2013, after a very difficult year, I got rid of all the frustration by jotting it down on this art journal spread. I covered (most) of the journaling with this Fleetwood Mac title, to relativize and ‘leave it all behind’.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

You can create something WITH (inspired by) music, as I showed above, but you can also…<\/p>\n

Create TO the music.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Here’s a short tutorial that I posted years ago on my blog…<\/p>\n

Take a background (paper, canvas) that you like to work on. I taped a big piece of blank paper onto cardboard and placed it on my easel.<\/p>\n

I then put some paint on my palet. At this point, I did not know what music would be my inspiration, so I chose random colours that spoke to me at that moment.<\/p>\n

I decided to work with a palet-knife but you can choose whatever material or tool you like: brush and paint, pencils, crayons, pens and so on\u2026<\/p>\n

Now that my materials were in place, I was ready to go so I turned on the radio. I had no idea what music would be on. The radio played a song I never heard before and I just went with it. I started to smear paint on the paper to the rhythm of the song.<\/p>\n

This is the image I ended up with\u2026 created to the tune with paint and a palet knife.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

The fun thing about this way of creating is, that the song does not need to have lyrics. You can even put on a cd with classical music \u2013 or hiphop, or house music\u2026 anything goes.<\/p>\n

After I\u2019d created this background, I got curious to what the song had been all about\u2026 so I looked on the internet and found the playlist of the radio station. The song was Waves by Mr. Probz<\/a>, a Dutch rapper\/artist I did not know. I had not thought he was a rapper, as the song does not sound like \u2018rap\u2019 to me \u2013 I kinda like it even!<\/p>\n

I also found the lyrics of the song here and was surprised when I read those\u2026 I had used just the right \u2018watery\u2019 colours! Then, I saw an image of a lighthouse and a boat (sail) popping out to me from the background, so I scribbled with a crayon and did some machine stitching to bring those shapes out.<\/p>\n

The lighthouse deserved more attention, so I cut out the shape from old dictionary pages, sprayed a bit of ink on it and glued it onto the page. I added a moon (or is it a sun?) and I journaled part of the lyrics on top of it.<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s the final piece.<\/p>\n
