Quirky Dutch Summer is een online inspiratie blog-event waarbij 10 weken<\/span>
\n lang (van 12 juni t\/m 14 augustus) elke dinsdag een inspirerende post op dit<\/span>
\n blog zal verschijnen. Heb je iets gemaakt n.a.v. \u00e9\u00e9n van de inspiratie-posts,<\/span>

#7 Using thread \/ Gebruik maken van draad<\/span><\/h3>\n

Threads, embroidery, sewing … it gives additional texture on your pages!
\nToday’s blog post deals with the use of threads on your artwork.<\/p>\n

I can almost here the ones among you that don’t like textile sighing:
\n“Oh no, she’s going to make me take the sewing machine…” Well no, it will not
\nonly be about sewing… there are plenty of fun and creative things to do with
\nthread without you dragging out the sewing machine. I will show different
\npossibilities so you can choose what suits you and what you like best.<\/p>\n

Draadjes, borduren, naaien… het geeft zoveel extra textuur op je pagina’s!<\/span>
\n Vandaag een blogpost die het gebruik van draad behandelt.<\/span><\/p>\n

De mensen die ‘niet zo textielerig” zijn, houden nu natuurlijk hun hart vast…<\/span>
\n “o jee, ze gaat de naaimachine erbij halen!” Nou nee hoor, niet alleen… er zijn<\/span>
\n genoeg leuke en creatieve dingen te doen met draad op je pagina’s zonder<\/span>
\n dat je de machine erbij sleept. Ik zal van alles wat laten zien zodat je kunt<\/span>
\n kiezen wat bij jou past en wat je het leukste vindt.<\/span><\/p>\n

The first examples show techniques where no sewing machine is required,
\nHa – not even a needle!<\/p>\n

Bij deze eerste voorbeelden heb je geen naaimachine nodig – sterker nog,<\/span>
\n niet eens een naald!<\/span><\/p>\n

Immerse a thread in ink.
\n(You can use all kinds of ink)<\/p>\n

Doop een draadje in inkt.<\/span>
\n (Je kunt hier allerlei soorten inkt of ecoline voor gebruiken)<\/span><\/p>\n

Put the thread carefully on your background.
\nLay another sheet of paper over it and push\/rub it in well.
\n(I used a brayer for that)<\/p>\n

Leg het draadje voorzichtig op je achtergrondvel.<\/span>
\n Leg er een ander vel papier overheen en duw\/wrijf het goed aan.<\/span>
\n (Ik gebruikte een roller)<\/span><\/p>\n

You can replace the thread (or use multiple threads)
\nand repeat the process several times.

Without protective paper, the thread curls round
\nyour brayer, creating another nice effect.<\/p>\n

Here I used a thicker thread, which I’ve colored with acrylic paint …<\/p>\n

The following example shows a simple technique that will
\nlead to maximum effect.<\/p>\n

Smear a thick layer of glue on your background and paste threads
\nin the layer. The thicker the thread, the more 3d effect it will give.
\nGlue (thin) paper on top of it.<\/p>\n

Het volgende voorbeeld laat een simpele techniek zien die<\/span>
\n een maximaal effect opleverd.<\/span><\/p>\n

Smeer je ondergrond in met een dikke laag (boekbind)lijm<\/span>
\n en\u00a0 plak er draden op. Hoe dikker het draad, hoe meer 3d effect<\/span>
\n je zult krijgen.\u00a0 Plak vervolgens (dun) papier over het geheel.<\/span><\/p>\n

The result is a wonderful texture and depth effect.<\/p>\n

Het resultaat is een prachtige textuur en diepte effect.<\/span><\/p>\n

Of course you don’t need to cover up your threads and pieces
\nof fabric with paper. It looks nice when you paste, sew or staple
\nall kinds of stuff on your page. I show you just one example but
\nthe possibilities are inexhaustible!<\/p>\n

Draadjes en stukjes stof hoef je natuurlijk niet altijd met papier<\/span>
\n te bedekken. Plak, naai of gebruik de nietmachine om stukjes stof,<\/span>
\n gaas of draadjes op je werk te bevestigen. Ik laat hiervan \u00e9\u00e9n voorbeeld<\/span>
\n zien, maar je kunt je natuurlijk wel voorstellen dat de mogelijkheden<\/span>
\n onuitputtelijk zijn!<\/span><\/p>\n

You can of course use thread to fasten all kinds of things to
\nyour page. The leather circle on this layout is tied to the the
\nbackground with a leather lace. The holes were punched first.
\nThis technique is quite simple but looks pretty cool.<\/p>\n

Draad is natuurlijk ook te gebruiken om dingen op je pagina –<\/span>
\n in dit geval een scrapbook layout – te bevestigen. De leren cirkel<\/span>
\n op deze layout is met een veter op de achtergrond bevestigd.<\/span>
\n De gaten zijn geponsd waarna de veter er doorheen is geregen.<\/span>
\n Simpel, maar met een stoer effect!<\/span><\/p>\n

You could do without a needle in the previous examples\/techniques
\nbut from here on, tools are required. On the next page, pieces of pattern
\npaper were glued to the background. Over it, chalkpaper was layed on
\nwhich figures were drawn. The pattern paper became the dress (and the
\nbelly of the cat.) \u00a0 The shapes were outlined by embroidering, using
\nblack thread.<\/p>\n

Kon je bij de vorige voorbeelden\/technieken nog wel zonder naald toe,<\/span>
\n vanaf hier lukt dat niet meer. Op deze art journal pagina zijn stukjes<\/span>
\n gedessineerd papier geplakt. Op het kalkpapier, dat er overheen is gelegd,<\/span>
\n zijn figuren getekend waarbij het onderliggende papier het dessin van de jurk<\/span>
\n (en buik van de poes) vormt. De omtrek van de figuren is vervolgens<\/span>
\n geborduurd met naald en draad.<\/span><\/p>\n

OK, then now it is time to go crazy with the\u00a0 sewing machine!
\nYou don’t need to be a tailor to be able to use the sewing machine
\nand do something fun with it! Ofcourse it would help when you
\nknow where the accelarator pedal is and it sure would be handy if
\nyou know how to sew backstitches and twisting (is that the right
\nname for those ‘triangle’ stitches?) but that’s about it.
\nJust place your paper under it and goooo….<\/p>\n

En dan gaan we nu los met de naaimachine!<\/span>
\n Je hoeft geen coupeuse te zijn om toch leuke dingen met de naaimachine<\/span>
\n te kunnen doen! Je moet natuurlijk wel weten hoe je gas geeft – en als je<\/span>
\n weet hoe je een stiksteek en een zigzag steek in moet stellen helpt dat ook,<\/span>
\n Maar verder is er geen kennis vereist. Gewoon je papier eronder leggen<\/span>
\n en gaan met die banaan!<\/span><\/p>\n

You guys do remember the guest post of Kate Crane last week, don’t you?
\nShe also took out the sewing machine and sewed a loose border on the
\ncover of her Summer journal. A sewn border, for instance, can be just the
\nfinishing touch to make a page special!<\/p>\n

Jullie herinneren je de gastpost van Kate Crane van vorige week vast nog wel.<\/span>
\n Ook zij haalde de naaimachine erbij om een losse rand rondom op de cover<\/span>
\n van haar Summer journal te naaien. Zo’n genaaide rand kan net de finishing<\/span>
\n touch opleveren die de pagina bijzonder maakt!<\/span><\/p>\n

To create the following you must have some sense and familiarity
\nwith your sewing machine, but it is not really difficult then.<\/p>\n

Use the sewing machine to outline the contours of a figure
\nwith a backstitch. It is as if you ‘draw ‘ with the sewing machine.
\nI created the ‘shadow’ by sewing forward and backward.
\nThat does take some practice though.<\/p>\n

Voor het volgende moet je wel al enige gevoel en vertrouwdheid<\/span>
\n met de naaimachine hebben, maar echt moeilijk is het niet.<\/span><\/p>\n

Gebruik de naaimachine om de contouren van een figuur met een<\/span>
\n stiksteek te omlijnen. Je ‘tekent’ als het ware met de naaimachine.<\/span>
\n De ‘schaduw’ is gemaakt door met de stiksteek steeds vooruit en<\/span>
\n achteruit te naaien. Dat vergt wel wat oefenen.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nIt is like ‘mirroring’ what I showed above: it’s not fabric sewn
\non paper, but fabric that is sew to LOOK like paper!<\/p>\n
