That is of course possible. However, in the art field closing your eyes is not what is meant when one uses this term. In fact, you keep your eyes open wide open to look carefully at the object that you want to draw. The trick is: you DO NOT look at your drawing paper.

‘Blind drawing’ is a well-known exercise to art-students. Most art schools or drawing courses spend at least one lesson working with this technique. ‘Blind drawing’ is in particular good to learn to observe. It is a technique that helps you concentrate and look really good. ‘Blind drawing’ sharpens your perception, increases the spatial imagination and refines your drawing skills. In addition. You learn to draw what you really see instead of what you think you see. Our brains have the tendency to rush and anticipate on what’s to come. That is why we put them on a side track with this exercise – they are not allowed to interfere! Your final drawing – the end result – is not important when you use this technique. What is important is to carefully observe the object you draw (and be amazed by the funny and/or amazing outcome afterward.)

It is usually recommended to start ‘blind drawing’ with a contour drawing, trying to capture the outline of the object. However, I find it much more enjoyable (both to draw as to the results that it gives) to not limit myself to just the outline. It is also nice to try and capture the inner shapes and lines of the object . You are of course free to restrict yourself, but if you want more then draw the small details that you encounter along the way. Make sure you don’t lift the pencil from your paper while drawing and remember: NO PEEPING!!!

Ouch … that’s hard huh?
Here is a trick to avoid looking ‘accidentally ‘ on your paper…

Yep, that’s right. Fasten a paper plate (or a piece of cardstock) to your pencil. Make sure the plate sits tight to your pencil so it doesn’t move. Start with placing your pencil or pen near the bottom of your paper. Look to the edge of your wrist and start, without looking at your hand or the page, to follow the edge very carefully with your eyes, drawing as you go. Draw each curve and bump that you see. You come against a crease? Follow the line in and then back out to the side and carry on. Don’t rush, stay focused and concentrate on observing every little detail.
