Curly straight hair
(Freewheelin’ Friday #39)

I have a question for you.
How often do you have a haircut?

I have “difficult hair”
It’s thick, it’s overwhelming MUCH and it curls.
That is, the under layers curl.
The top layer is straight.
If I put the top layer of my hair up with pins,
you see the curls that sit underneath (see this photo.)

And whatever they try: the hair keeps curling and the top layer stays straight.
With “they” I mean hairdressers – hairstylists…
or whatever name they go by these days.

When hairdressers sees my hair, they always wants to “do something fun”
with it. Like putting curls in the slick top layer. I know it won’t work.
I’ve had this hair all my life. I keep telling them: it DOESN’T WORK!!!
You can spend hours curling and spraying and drying…
I get on my bike and before I get home, it’s straight!
And the under layer is CURLY.
Don’t bother…

Just give me a haircut where the differences can live together on my head.
Do you GET THAT? hairdresser…??

The lady that cut my hair got it eventually.
After she styled my hair a few times, she knew what she could do with it.
And what she couldn’t do. She got used to it.
I got used to her and we both were satisfied.

…she moved.
She’s gone. She works far away now.

And I had to start over again, with another hairdresser.
I don’t like that. I don’t want to have to explain all over again.
And hearย  them say “but we have the exact tools to….”
or “I bet your former hairdresser didn’t try…”

It always ends with stress. With having an argument.
With “professional” against “It’s my hair and I know what it does”
Or coming home with curls that aren’t curls anymore.
With a haircut that doesn’t match my face.
No matter what I tell them, it always goes that way the first time.

So after my hairdresser moved,
I let my hair hang down.
A month.
Another month.
And another month.
(It’s getting long, but a ponytail will do)

This is how it looked on Wednesday 12.30 pm.
I needed a haircut!

My son found a new hairdresser. It’s in the neighbourhood.
He had his hair cut twice, and highly recommended the hairdresser.

So I went last Wednesday.
There was a nice young lady.
She sat outside smoking when I arrived.
(I liked her right away *teehee*)

I told her about my hair.
Guess what?
She saw it, she worked with it,
she understood my hair
and she even gave me good advise.
I love you Maureen!!!

Here’s my new “head” on Wednesday 13.40 pm

There doesn’t seem to be much difference on the photos but I can tell you
there is! (besides the double chin showing on the first pic)
I should have worn something red instead of black for a better view.

Anyway, I’m a happy gal!!!

No creativity this week. Nothing crafty to show you.
So I leave you with this Autumn picture I took two years ago.
It’s taken from a trail in our neighbourhood.
I live just around the corner from woods, heathland and fields.
I used to went for long walks in the area. I should pick that up again.
Go for long walks, and take my camera with me.
Maybe if the weather is fine this weekend?

But whatever the weather brings, I love September!
Born in the Fall, I just love this time of year.
I’m an Autumn child.

Enjoy your weekend!

Je t’embrasse.

I love it!!! You look great and so happy you found someone who “understands” your hair! That’s the hardest part most times!

  • Googlover/keishua Says:

    Howdy there!
My hair has a similar attitude. It is straight at the top and super curly underneath. I never know what to do with it and it impossible to hold any curl but the one it wants. I usually get a haircut every few months(although my stylist says it should be every 6 weeks).

I totally hear you with the hairdressers!! I have what they call ‘a lot of hair’…not THIN, not THICK… just A LOT!!! And mine has curls too!! Yep…I straighten it most days! LOL! Soooooooooooo I know I have a ‘bad’ hairdresser when they work on me and they say, “Wow! You have THICK hair!”…noooooooooooooo I don’t ….. soooooooooooo when I find one that says, “WOW! You have A LOT of hair!”… I know I am in love and I stay with that person as long as they are around!! :):):):):) I am LOVING your hair!!! GORGEOUS! :):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):):)

hi marit!!! tgif!!! I just finished cleaning my kitchen, have a yam cooking and my happy self on the couch in front of the tv. I have a lot planned for my weekend, but I’m guessing I won’t get to all of it, lol! Crafting 1st, exercise 2nd, crafting 3rd, 4th, 5th. I guess I’ll do some laundry too! oooh, maybe post my race photos on my blog!

I love your curly hair, but everyone I know with curly hair wants it straight and everyone with straight hair, wants it curly (me!) my hair cries if you try to curl it! sigh. your new “do” is so clean and fresh! Will you smile in your photo next time so we know you’re happy with it??? ; .P

  • Viv Says:

  • Jennifer Says:

It is a great day when you finally find someone that gets your hair and makes you feel good! Congrats!

  • Chris Aiton Says:

Love your hair! I have super fine but curly hair – what a mess sometimes – and with all of the heat and humidity in Florida, it is like a halo around my head sometimes. When we lived in the Islands, I had it very long and wore it in a braid all the time but now it’s shorter –

  • yyam Says:

I laughed when I read about your “plight”. I don’t have difficult hair…just lots of fine hair so when humidity is high, it falls really flat. Which means I need lots of layers for extra volume….but I’m a wash and go kind product or blowdry…so I hate it when hairstylists ask me to perm or straighten my hair.
I think you look so fresh with the new cut! ๐Ÿ™‚

  • Holly Says:

I am so glad you were able to find a new hairdresser that understood your hair right away! I have very thick and curly hair that is down past the middle of my back. I used to keep it just below shoulder length but a couple of years ago, I decided to let it grow longer until I changed my mind. I haven’t changed my mind yet. I do get it trimmed about every 4 months just to keep the ends healthy and give my hair a little shape.

Geniet ervan!

    Groetjes, Angรจle

  • Annemarie Says:

The front of my hair is straight the back is curly. If you don’t cut it right, eventually I look like a witch or a circus clown. I gave up on hair stylists after the first one died and the second one left to live in Virginia. I am now stylistless. My hair will continue to grow until I can muster up the courage to find a new one.

  • anne Says:

I was having a similar conversation last night with my scrap group – i don’t think anyone likes their hair! i feel like an old, graying poodle as my hair has gotten curlier and curlier (and grayer and grayer)as my 40’s have progressed. Too short to style but i simply can’t live thru the “growing out” months. sometimes i think something just this side of a crew cut might be the answer…

  • Irma Says:

    Zonnige groetjes – Irma

  • druga szesnascie Says:

Marit, thank you ever so much for your kind comment on my blog today. I can’t express how I feel hearing words from somebody as talented as you.

  • Thinkie Says:

Ha, ha, ik laat m’n haar zo รฉรฉn a twee keer per jaar knippen door wie er even tijd heeft en een beetje recht kan knippen.

  • Glenda Tkalac Says:

The hair looks great Marit and I am having a hair dilemma right now myself! My hair is fine, thin and doesn’t really do anything, because it is fine and thin… so..I ususally just leave it long partly because I’m lazy and partly because I like long hair. I need to go and get a couple inches off though because it’s getting straggly on the ends and I also have a few greys showing (gasp!) and need a color. I’m hoping to get it done the next couple weeks here. I’ll have to post a before and after pic too!

ps. you are lucky you have lots of thick hair!!!

  • ~*~Patty Says:

Hair is an interesting topic … always! You look cute in both pics and in the first we have about the same hair length.

up until a few years ago I NEVER went to the hair dressers … it was 30 years without a haircut … my sister sometimes trimmed the ends for me … very long hair and then I decided to get it all cut off for Locks of Love … I like it long enough to pull back in a pony tail … but sometimes it feels too long … I’m sure we all understand … also I have never colored my hair … ever … oxo

  • Mirjamc Says:

marit, je nieuwe kapsel staat je prachtig!!!

  • Dani Says:

WHAT double chin??? I see nothing even close! lol.

Love the new hair – very pretty. And my hair is like that, very straight right on top and curly/wavy underneath. I just roll with it now!
