Men on bikes

July 15, 2011 By Marit 36 Comments

Some of you did not expect this from me, but every Summer I’m under
the spell of the ‘Tour de France’.
For you who don’t know what this is: The Tour de France is a bicycle race
that is made up of 21 stages and covers a total distance of 3,430.5 kilometres.
For three long weeks, I spend half of the the afternoon in front of the TV.
The first days the route leads over flat terrain which isn’t very spectacular
to watch… normally.

However, this years’ tour is thrilling and spectacular right from the beginning!
The riders seem to be nervous, and there were a lot of accidents and battles
going on in the riders platoon…

[Are you getting tired of me talking about bicycles yet?
Hang in there crafters… there’s something creative in this post too!
It’s even a video, to make up for my ‘sports-talk’]

..

‘The tour’ get’s really interesting (and scary!) though when the tour caravan
reaches the high mountains! It takes a lot of courage and sweat to climb the
‘Col du Tourmalet’ (2115 m) in the Pyrenees and the ‘Col du Galibier (2645 m)
a mountain in the French Alpes.

Heck, it even takes courage to sit on the couch in front of the TV screen…
(picture men throwing themselves from a mountain with 50 miles an hour!)

I found inspiration in the race and wrote a haiku for today’s Haiku my Heart

Tour de France
Een man op een fiets
kans op ritzege eindigt
in het prikkeldraad
Tour de France
A man on a bike
the chance to win this stage ends
abrupt in barbed wire

In my last post, I promised to spoil you today with a video that shows you
the awesome ‘thing’ I made! I keep my promises, so here it is!

https://www.maritspaperworld.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/haiku.mp4

This book combines two new (to me) binding techniques that are described
in the book Cover to Cover by Shereen LaPlantz.
(I know, I know – I never can seem to take the easy way!)
The little sign on the front are Japanese characters and says ‘haiku’.
I use this little book to collect all the haiku’s I make for Haiku my Heart.

There’s this special haiku in the ‘hidden section’ (behind the spine)

Ik gaf gehoor aan

recuerda mi corazon

een haiku per week

I responded to

recuerda mi corazon

one haiku a week

(‘recuerda mi corazon’ is the name of Rebecca’s ‘haiku my heart’ blog.
It is Spanish and means something like ‘remember my heart’)

It’s mid afternoon my friends… I’m off… it’s time…
Guess what I will be doing the rest of the day 😉

Enjoy your weekend!

Oh Marit… My mermaid friend. You are watching Men on Bicycles, I am watching Women play Futbol. I did watch the Tour with much enthusiasm when Lance Armstrong made his bid for five, and six titles in a row! That was quite exciting.
I love your book. I am adding a link to a blog of a friend of mine, (and probably someone you know from sharing at Rebecca’s blog). Her name is Paula and she has the “Molokai Girl” blog. Here is a link to a story about little books that she makes. They are quite artistic, like the one you made. Molokai Girl and her little books
Another connection then for us. I love coming here on Fridays. I have been busy, but i will try to come on a day other than Friday and see what you’re up to.

    Peace to you my friend

I LOVE your haiku book. How wonderful (and such a good idea). I love the Tour de France. Mr. Dragon and I watched it on the telly each year. The beautiful landscapes and a bike race. Hard to beat! Wonderful words to go with the images. Thanks!

Prachtig boekje!

Loved this post, Marit! The haiku was a good reminder that we can be flying high but get caught short, land in barbed wire, and then pick ourselves up and get back in the race!
I once spent a summer on a students abroad program and saw the Tour go by (with Eddy Merckx in the lead!); I remembmer so vividly how powerful their legs were…
Your book is exquisite, and how special to put original haiku in your handmade artbook.. all yours. And how pretty the surprise when you turned the book over… You’re an unbelievably creative and curious mermaid, Marit!
