Crocheted basket & woyww #477

July 25, 2018 By Marit 28 Comments

Goodmorning on this warm morning lovely ones… pfffew, the Netherlands are still suffering from tropical temperatures and it’s no weather for a middle-aged girl who experiences hot flashes… all I can do is sit quiet in my atelier to bind a new journal. I bound a junk journal as a test & preperation for a workshop I plan to teach after the Summer and you can see it on my desk today.

WOYWW #477

In the afternoon I watch the Tour de France on tv and I it’s only after dinner, when the sun sets behind the rooftops and it cools down a little, that I can sit outside with a glass of cool white wine and enjoy the evening sky and all the birds (see this blogpost.)

If you stopped by my blog last week you know that I crocheted a ‘box’ (well, it’s more a basket) that I planned to stiffen with glue. It turned out allright and I even took photos of the process. Here’s how I did it:

First, I mixed glue (I used my book-bind glue, it’s good for all kind of things!) with water. I didn’t really measure it but I think there’s slightly more glue than water…

I’d cutted a ‘bottom’ from cardboard that I painted blue.
I covered a box with plastic, so the wet/glued basket would not stick to it, and put the bottom on top of that box.

I soaked the crocheted basket in the glue mix and hang it over the bottom/box to dry.

I let it dry for two days and ended up with this:

It stands on the shelf an holds up to ten toilet rolls… some nice storage eeh?!
I am happy!

It’s awesome!! I bet the glue dried so quickly in this heat as well – I love the way you guessed at the measuring of the glue/water, I never measure anything, just have a go ad hope for the best.
Did you draw out lines on the fabric for your sashiko or did you just jump straight in? I’ve ordered the thread which hasn’t come yet but I know that I’m not very good about the planning of the design. I might just go for it straightaway, it usually turns out ok!!

At least the hot weather is good for quick drying Marit. It is rather too hot to do a great deal in the heat. Love the way that your loo roll storage turned out. It looks very pretty on the shelf! Have a great week. Sarah #13

I feel for you, Marit. I am sitting in my air conditioned office and pitying you. That junk journal looks wonderful. I bet it looks good inside, too.

What a clever and unique way to store toilet paper. Thanks for showing us how you created it. Thanks, too for the earlier visit. Happy WOYWW from # 1.

Good job on the crochet project. Good use of it. Here it is beginning to be a lost art. I love working with threads in the wintertime. The weather all of this world is on a vengeance. I’ve hardly been outdoors this summer. After the rains came the bugs. Have a great WOYWW kind of week.

This is so clever Marit, what a great way to tidy away those unsightly rolls. If I had the space i’d have this sort of storage everywhere. Thanks so much for sharing. Happy WOYWW Hugs Tracey #6

That’s a really neat idea to stiffen up your crochet items to have a more utilitarian use for it! Looks great! En ja ik hoop dat het de komende dagen iets koeler wordt en wat gaat regenen, dat hebben we allemaal erg nodig 🙂 Thanks for stopping by my blog earlier! Happy rest of the week! xo Cheetarah #28

Hi Marit, Dank je wel for visiting my desk and your kind comments, Yes sorting Christmas stuff in this heat is odd, but I only have one birthday in August and one in September to make cards for, so can use the time for the Christmas cards, but only if they are sorted.
That basket is beautiful, I have been tempted to try a crochet basket a number of times, seeing your lovely one, I might just get round to it.

Your crocheted basket is awesome! It reminds me of a crocheted toilet holder shaped like a hat that my Mom used to have. Thanks for your visit and blessings!

What an interesting idea, Marit, and it’s turned our really well! Amazing what you can do with glue… Thank you for your visit and your encouraging remarks about my cooking! Cooking is something I really enjoy but I do find it tiring. I’m feeling wiped out today after all my efforts yesterday, and today it’s been even hotter than before – much too hot for me! Sorry you’ve got it too.

    Happy belated WOYWW,

Wow, Marit, that basket is great…I love the glue stiffening technique. Even with a large amount of wet glue you manage to keep everything so tidy! I do love the weather and will be sorry to see it go, although I understand so many don’t cope well.

Thanks for the instructions for the crochet box – not that I can crochet one as yet, but I might try to learn soon.
Well, your junk journal looks very nice and I am sure that is one workshop that will rove a big hit – I would do it if I lived over there.
Hope the heat is down a bit for you now, like here – and you have some rain for those tulip fields.
Sorry I am so late – Hugs, Neet 3 xx
