Do you sleep at night?

April 13, 2012 By Marit 38 Comments

I have trouble sleeping lately, my head is full with everything that
is happening! The magazine is still at the printing office (we will go
there to take pictures the moment they are ready to ‘get the machines
rolling’ – probably next Monday.)

What does one do when sleep won’t come…
Count sheep?
That’s possible, but there are more beautiful things you could do…

… like looking at the night sky for instance!
(and write a haiku about it for Haiku my Heart Friday)

..

Wolkenloze nacht

beweegt daar een vliegtuig of

een vallende ster?

A cloudless night sky

does there move an aeroplane

or a shooting star?

‘Haiku my Heart Friday’ is hosted by Rebecca from Recuerda Mi Corazon.
For more haiku and photos, visit the blogs of the other participants.
You can find the list here.

I got the sweetest email from my blogbuddy Linda ‘Phinner‘ the other day!
It made me blush the way she praised me with my  ‘new art making’ (the
canvasses I showed on my blog in the former posts) and she asked:

I am also curious about your process and how you go about developing
such a piece…

The way I work on those canvasses is something I did ages ago in art school
as an ‘in between practice’ in some sort of lesson – I can’t even remember
exactly what the lesson or assignment was… Anyway, it came back to me
when the designer needed a ‘background’ for the cover of FEATURING.
He had some sort of ‘painting’ in his head and he asked me if I could make
what he described. The idea was to make just the layered ‘surface’ (gesso and
paint) but when he put the title and text on it, it ‘needed something more’…

and at that moment this ‘technique/way of working’ kinda ‘clicked’ in my head
so I went for it and we both love the outcome!

Yes, this is it. The front cover of the debut issue of the magazine!

Oh, and as you know, FEATURING has a ‘young team’ who
keep me sharp, modern and up-to-date (thanks girlies!) so
as of now you can find us on facebook too!

I love the fact that you can ‘officially LIKE the magazine now,
so go ahead if you LIKE to say that you LIKE FEATURING!
I will LOVE you for that!

Letters from the Wasteland

Letter #3

(Size: 16 x 11 cm - 6.3 x 4.3 inch)

The dimension was created by gluing paper over thread.
Here’s a close up photo

Letters from the Wasteland

Letter #4

(Size: 16 x 11 cm - 6.3 x 4.3 inch.)
Materials used: gesso, acrylic paint, Indian ink, washi tape,
scraps of handmade paper, piece from an encyclopedia page,
paper with woolen thread, strips(text) from a fairytale book.

With this last ‘letter’ we are right back where I started: sleep.
I hope you all have a good rest in the weekend  (keep your fingers crossed
that I will) and I see you next week… it looks like that will be one of the most
exiting weeks in my life!

This Wasteland book is a real mistress-piece, I think, Marit. Wow. I am in love with them for how they say so much with so few details. Gorgeous !
I hope that the night sky keeps you good company until sleep gently comes for you.
    Happy Weekend, Artist-Friend !

i love your creative journey and your inclusion of all.
perhaps sleep is over rated? especially for those, like you, who spin straw into gold!

last night i could NOT sleep
    and viewed the sky through:

    Star Walk

do you know this smart phone app?
    i adore it
    but it wakes me up
rather than puts me back to sleep…..

    Genius at work.
    Beautiful magazine cover!
    And haiku.
I think the Earth shifting her axis has something to do with sleep…
I used to be the best sleeper until recently.

Yes, I count sheep, stars, planes, syllables for haiku! That’s the trouble with active minds they never know when to stop counting!

    Nice Post x

Dear goodness, this is so beautiful. I like everything in your work, especially the last one, which seems more dynamic than the other one – it’s like the work is moving…and the combination of all the different materials is just wonderful.

Sleep, so I paint in my head at night, planning projects instead of counting sheep!

I will get to Facebook and “Like” Featuring right after I comment here. I love your haiku. I know you are so busy with your creations,m but someday, I will ask you to translate my haiku into your language. I have always wanted to tell you how I like seeing the two languages side by side like you do every week.
The ‘paper’ over the thread makes such a beautiful effect. Wonderful creativity.
Might you need a Dream Catcher?

Your excitement is contagious my friend! I’m so excited for you!!!
Marshall wrote a haiku recently, and I thought of you of course. I will have to remember it and write it to you. It is hysterical to me, I hope you will find it funny too. Not funny like a joke, I can’t explain it, you will have to see it.
Thank you so much for visiting me as much as you do, especially with all you have going on!! I do hope you go to the other blog too just to see my art journal pages. no need to comment, I just still see you as “juf” and value your approval!!

Hello Marit, the cover of Featuring is amazing… as are you, and the art that you share. I think you saw from Kimberly that I will be in Rotterdam three weeks from this past Saturday. I can not wait. As to not sleeping, I walk labyrinths in my mind when I can’t sleep. Two in particular. If my thoughts stray I have to start over, I usually fall back asleep before I reach the center…
