I visited the hospital this morning.
My periodontist gave me a referral because she noticed that my under lip is
a bit thick and there’s a small, white spot on my under lip. It’s been there for
over 10 years so I didn’t worry much, but she insisted I would let a surgeon
have a look at it.
The surgeon, a young and handsome guy, read the referral letter.
He looked at my lip.
He said something to me and then suddenly,
in the middle of a sentence he said:
“do you do that a lot ma’am”
“Huh????”
“You just bite your lip”
“Did I…?”
He laughed, examined the spot once again and you know what it is?
I have callouses on my lip. No kidding!
I spend years, quietly biting my lip!
He even took a few photos of it, to use in a lecture.
The advice he gave: ‘Don’t bite your lip and it will go away eventually’.
Yeah, right. That’s easier said then done.
How do I break this habit?
I don’t wear lipstick very often, but when I came home I put a lot of lipstick on.
Maybe that will help to remind me not to bite my lip?
I might become famous as ‘the lipstick lady’…. ๐
Any other ideas to overcome this habit?
Someone?
I had no time for art this week.
My muse sits weeping in the attic.
She wants to play…

I will call her when I’m ready for her.
I did write a haiku though.

Je Haiku is wederom prachtig!!
Chris Aiton says
I was very amused by your visit to the doctor! Maybe putting something on your lip that doesn’t take good would help. Love your haiku! Have a great weekend!
Julie Tucker-Wolek says
I don’t bite my lip… but I have a bad habit of rubbing my tongue on the backside of my teeth… lol! I don’t know why… I just do!! LOL! I loveeeeeee the poem today! Have a great weekend! :):):):):):):):):):):):):):)

I also bite my lower lips, but no callouses…YET!
Tracy says
Too funny about your lip biting ๐
I used to have half moons on the palms of my hands, but not all the time.
Came to realize when I was stressed it came out in my sleep by me making tight fists in my sleep. So my nails would cut into my hands. hench the half moons on my palms, lol.
Haven’t done that for years now ๐

Can I just say how happy I am that you have joined in the Haiku My Heart friday Love ? It makes me so happy when I see your name there !
Oh, the things we do from habit ! Pretty amazing. So glad that it was just a callous. And lipstick can be a fun accessory ! ๐
I miss clothes on a clothesline, especially sheets. My hubby doesn’t like the look of clothes hanging out to dry in the backyard – funny, eh ? I guess we all have things we just do just out of habit…
Please find time for your sweet muse. She will shower you with gifts in return !
Happy Friday, my Beautiful Friend !

marit…
if only most habits could be harnessed with the addition of bright lipstick!
i love that you are bitten with the haiku habit. your photographs are as stark and beautiful as haiku. i love your image and your words…
so glad you are here.
Monica {bohemian twilight} says
like your haiku!
well, a callous is nothing to worry about, the lip-biting probably relieves some stress. ๐

When you can write–and you can!–all is well.

I am so happy it was just a case of biting your lip! And you made a young, handsome surgeon smile too! The Lipstick Lady makes me laugh… the Haiku is wonderful – mood-setting!
Like Kim, the first name I look for at HMH is yours! Try and have a time-out for you and your Muse, eh?
Have a great weekend! xx
Dawn Elliott says
I love your haiku and pictures today – just lovely! As for biting your lip…maybe it’s okay to do so! And that goes for wearing lipstick, as well!
Lena says
Hihi… lipstick lady…

I’m glad it was nothing serious.
Terri Kahrs says
Thank goodness it nothing more serious than a persistent habit, Marit!!! Oh, how I chuckled when I read your post.
This has been a terrible “art week” for me too. Yesterday I had an emergency root canal and basically lost the day to pain. I’m much better but my Muse is laying low.
Love your Haiku . . . . reminds me of warm evenings and cool sheets from my childhood. Nothing like the smell of fresh linens to this day! Hope you have a fabulous weekend! Now go out and buy some pretty new lipstick!!! Hugs, Terri xoxoxo
Jenneke says

Very nice haiku. I love the story of your doctor visit. Lipstick should do the trick.
Michelle LaPoint Rydell says
Maybe you should put something on your lips that doesn’t taste good! Then you won’t want to bite it! LOL. Wait, that’s a bad idea. You probably wouldn’t want to eat then either. Okay, never mind. Well, anyways, I LOVE your haiku! I am really enjoying reading them. Have a great weekend!
Noelle says
I love your haiku as well and your stark black and white photos, so artsy! I love that I get to learn Dutch each time I come here, so great. Everyone has habits they develop over their lifetime, Marit. Biting your lip is pretty mild I would say. Here is a great quote from Gwyneth Paltrow to go with your new cure:
Beauty, to me, is about being comfortable in your own skin. That, or a kick-ass red lipstick.
~Gwyneth Paltrow.
And there you have it my dear.
Haiku paint those pretty lips.

Re The Biting Your Lip Thing: We find that powdered gecko claws mixed with honey usually do the trick.
Love the haiku, and I learned two new words from it too – harbingers and limpid – so thanks for that (my first guess for limpid was way off the mark).
Re, “white sheets in the wind”: You have my sympathy. I hate it when that happens.
All the best, Boonie

so glad to know it is nothing serious. breaking habits are hard, i know.

I love the macro with the steel clothespins! They do seem to augur a clear and luminous night!
Chapstick? Gum? I’m always clenching my jaw. When I catch myself doing it, I of course stop. But how long was I clenching?
yyam says
So glad that it’s not something serious! I think you should find something else to distract you….twirl a pen? *LOL*

Glenda Tkalac says
I used to bite the inside of my cheeks until my dentist said it could cause cancer if I kept doing it. Let me tell you that fixed me up real quick fast and in a hurry!! Scared the crap out of me and the next time I went my cheeks looked all good!! I guess when you keep biting them those white spots or streaks can appear and they could potenially cause trouble if you don’t remove the source, which was for me the chewing. It sound soo gross when you think of it eh? haha But it made me stop!!
Daniella says
Oh dear friend! I am sorry, but I have no advice for you!! I pick my cuticles on my fingers. I pick them until they bleed!!! and I don’t notice that I am doing it either, it is only after my fingers look like I grated them on a cheese grater that I notice!!! I tried band aids, but you know what? I just picked the bandad till it was ripped!!
I hope your lipstick works!!!
