Last weekend, we helped my son move his last stuff to his new room in
another city. He’s officially gone out of the house now and although I was
used to him being away (he lived part with his dad) it still is a weird feeling,
not having him around half the week…
What’s a mom to do to overcome the silence?
Well, for an art journaling mom, there is no better therapy than get creative!
I made this page in my ‘album cover art journal’
There couldn’t be a more appropriate song then this one…
Teach your children – Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young
I used the second part of the song:
And you, of tender years
Don’t know the fears
That your elders grew by
so please help them with your youth
They seek the truth
Before they can die.
Teach your parents well
Their children’s hell
Will slowly go by
And feed them on your dreams
The ones they pick
The ones you’ll know by.
Don’t you ever ask them why
If they told you, you would cry
So just look at them and sigh
And know they love you
approximately 30,5 x 30,5 cm - 12 x 12 inch
The ‘album cover art journal’ is made of album covers/sleeves that are
taped together, forming a huge folded art journal (see pics in this post)
Every time I create a page in this journal, I need to take into account the page
that comes next to it or falls over it. It’s a bit of a puzzle to combine the pages
in a way that they fit each other.
Here’s what the page looks like with the next page visible (which is an album
cover by James Last – I will work on that one next)
Folding the pages, it looks like this…
I think I will make a video – flipping through the pages – when it’s all done.
That way, the ingenious folded pages will be more clear.
Next I want to show you this little antique booklet I bought in a small store
last Summer. I had the intention to alter the pages and turn it into a small
art journal. The text is in French, and I didn’t know what it said at first.
My mum found out it contains the catechism… but I’m sure that if there is
a God, he/she won’t mind me putting gesso over these words to turn it into
art journal pages.
I won’t alter the cover though… look at the beautiful weathered leather!
The book is bound with a thin thread.
Here’s a detail (click on the photo to enlarge)
The pages inside turned yellow and the paper is very thin and torn…
… with curly edges.
I’m preparing this booklet right now. I already glued pages together and
smeared a thin layer of gesso over the pages so the text shines through.
I’m not sure where to go next, but I’ll show you when it’s finished.
I’m sure you are expecting to see my weekly ‘Chronicles’ page coming now.
Well, no. Sorry… I started working on it but it’s not finished yet. (I know,
I know, it’s Tuesday already!) I want to work on it some more this afternoon
and will publish it next time.
One last thing before I go.
Do you know my friend Lena?
Her daughter Carmen made a video clip with her class (high school)
It’s amazing to see a bunch of teenage kids making something so professional!
I recommend you all hop over to Lena’s blog to watch the video and leave
Carmen some nice words ’cause WOWZAH, those kids are stunning!!!
Enjoy your week dear ones!
Looking forward to the final altered book.
You know you have taught your son well so those good thoughts can fill your mind while you are getting used to the silence.
Best wishes.
Ai… het lege nest syndroom ๐
Prachtig je album cover! Leuk met die 3 foto’s.
I can hear that song going through my head. I’ve learned so much from my children.
Hello my sweet art sister…waving at you too!!!
That CSNY song is one of my all time favorite tunes…it has touched my heart again and again over the years…still fresh and so meaningful!
Filling your empty nest with art and creativity sounds just right to me ๐
the vintage catechism is a wonderful rescue…Love the old pages beaten with time and prayers too I guess
your art and heart will give it a continued life…I like that alot
oxo

One of my favorite songs of all time ! Reminds me of my Dad who used to play it loud and have us three girls sing to it in the car….
Love your art, Love your heart !
Have a great Wednesday, Beautiful Marit !
Teach Your Children is one of my favourite songs from CSN&Y. i love the album cover book you are making. It’s ingenius.
Funny! This spread is about commandments.
XIII : Thou shalt not lie.
IX : Thou shalt not have sex out of a marriage.
X : Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s good.
Well, I’m really really not an exemple to follow… I did all three!!!
Quick Marit, cover those pages with gesso! Arghhhhh!
Prachtig album cover pagina! Leuk die drie fototjes! Een prima manier om Nout’s vertrek te verwerken. Ik begrijp alleen nog niet hoe het album in elkaar zit! Mooi boekje om in te AJen. Jij gaat er vast een leuke toepassing voor vinden. Fijne week!!!!!!!
Love your pages, and looking forward to seeing your altered book. Yes, it must be quiet without your son …. I’ve got all that to come in a few years!
Can’t wait to see how the tiny book turns out!
Your album cover book is so intriguing and very colourful!
I do think that you will pour all your emotions into your next art journal pages… and I hope the retreat goes excellently well. Maybe I can get there next year?! xoxoxo
What a beautiful album cover! And an interesting project with the pages!
Love the little book you found – If there is a higher power might be out there, it is a creative power and I think it wouldn’t mind you adding your creativity to the pages.
